Southampton Resident Responds To Trump Criticism With A Bigger Sign

Kenny Oliver of Southampton purchased an 8-foot-by-3-foot Trump sign to replace his smaller sign and show his neighbors who he supports in the presidential election. COURTESY OF KENNY OLIVER
Nov 5, 2016 8:20 AM

Like many people during election season, Kenny Oliver, who lives in Southampton Cove in Southampton, expresses his First Amendment rights by putting up signs in his front yard to show everyone which candidates he supports.

Mr. Oliver, 52, had small lawn signs showing his support for presidential candidate Donald Trump and U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin—until one of his neighbors disapproved.

On October 20, Mr. Oliver received a letter in the mail that was addressed to “Trump Supporters” at his address. The return address was simply “Cove Citizens.”

As Mr. Oliver read the letter, he noticed, at the top of the letter, that it was specifically addressed to his address. It attacked Mr. Trump’s policies on the economy, trade agreements and tax policies as “a complete joke.” In closing, the letter said: “Only the truly ignorant would vote for Trump. Only racists would hoist a Confederate flag in their yard. Are you ignorant and racist?”

In response to the letter, Mr. Oliver went to a local sign shop on County Road 39 and purchased an even bigger sign—measuring 8 feet by 3 feet—and erected it on his house.

“I find it hard to believe that a lawn sign offends a person,” Mr. Oliver said. “When I received this letter, I decided to make a larger sign instead of trying to be shamed of my political opinion.”

He added, “If your opinion is for Trump, it’s almost as if the left side can’t handle it.”

Since posting the bigger sign, he said, he has not received any more letters from the “Cove Citizens.”

Mr. Oliver is a retired police officer who served on both the New York and Southampton Town police departments. He’s been a volunteer fireman for over 20 years, has served as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Oyster Bay and is a fully active member of the Southampton Elks Lodge.

Posting signs is a worthless endeavor. Does any sane person actually believe that doing so convinces even one passerby to vote for a name on a sign? Who cares who someone posting a sign is voting for? They are a blight on our environment which produce absolutely nothing positive.

Hilarious!

This is all about a mean letter that criticized a man's support of Trump and called him a racist. It's not as if someone drove up on his lawn and rode over his Trump sign. In response, he bought an even bigger sign.

It's a mildly amusing human interest piece - - - in response to which Trump posters have written paeans casting Mr. Oliver as a modern day Nathan Hale.
