ok lets hear what they should change
By BrianWilliams (87), on Oct 21, 18 9:30 AM
Cops should enforce the speed limit like they did for the 1st year they reduced the speed limits years ago. The speed limit is 35. I usually drive 40-45. Cars routinely pass me like I am standing still.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on road safety but would suggest looking in to:
- strictly enforcing the speed limit (maybe speed cameras every 1/3 of a mile
- no left turns out of any parking lots or businesses
- explore any possibilities for widening the road
By adlkjd923ilifmac.aladfksdurwp (747), southampton on Oct 21, 18 3:13 PM
Speed cameras would make a killing, but protests would follow and they'd be taken down like they were in Florida.

a toll at the canal and actual enforced speed limits

Resurface the roadway in carpet.

it must have been a jeep to roll in a 35mph zone
By coxie1 (37), southampton on Oct 21, 18 9:38 AM
It would be nice to know the cross road where the accident occurred...

Hill Station Rd where Gas Hampton is.
By watermill_mike (35), Sag Harbor on Oct 22, 18 9:45 AM
There's no shoulder for vehicles to transition from going highway speed to making an exit. Accidents are usually caused by the speeders (50 mph +) who veer in and out of slower moving traffic (35 mph), only to wind up directly on top of the bumper of someone trying to pull into a business (5 mph). That's how and why they lock up their brakes and get into trouble. More lights aren't the answer... more enforcement of the limit is.

Was a State Cluster F___ from the beginning. That's the problem, engineering... Also stupid people not paying attention...
Should make Hill Station Road no left turn...JMO

The problem is not engineering it is the NIMBYs who blocked the road from being built as it was intended. The road was intended to be an extension of Sunrise Hwy to Montauk Highway.

This road was planned in the 60's for this but no one wanted it and now you need it desperately. The safety issues are because this road should be a limited access road using frontage roads to move traffic to the major side roads.

Like it or not those of you who fight the expansion of the road to ...more

Sadly local ppl are part of the problem as well . And a. Vehicle traveling with a FD plate or an EMT plate does not make one invincible....if anything an example should be set those with these plates , traveling on 39 , to slow the hell down

thats naive to think cars coming off the highway will be doing 35 by the time they get to the gas station at hill station rd.
By BrianWilliams (87), on Oct 22, 18 8:34 AM
It's naive to think they will, but it's certainly not impossible to slow down from 55 to 40. Let off the gas a little!
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8265), HAMPTON BAYS on Oct 22, 18 9:38 AM
All I know is that if any meaningful change does come to the safety of the CR39 corridor, it will be led by Suffolk County. Our Town government has ZERO courage to act in the face of all our hysterical micro-constituencies. They are deer in the headlights.
By CPalmer (122), Southampton on Oct 21, 18 4:36 PM
Speed cameras will force drivers to drive at a perfectly reasonable and safe 35 mph. Going 50-60 between all the traffic lights on County Rd 39 is reckless.
By Non-Political (125), Hampton Bays on Oct 21, 18 10:08 PM
Post large signs: NO TAILGATE - FINES DOUBLES like they do in Pennsylvania. Start issuing fines and lots of them. There are too many businesses on this County Road, cars entering and exiting parking lots and side streets. It's being used like its 495, for high-speed commuting but it's way too dangerous for that, and the tail-gators are harassing other drivers. Ticket them both, heavily.

Don’t change anything. It’s very crowded out here and the natural selection is desperately needed.

Don't get me wrong, I stay off CR39 altogether, but not everyone has that luxury.

This road could use one of those digital signs that shows how many accidents And deaths have occurred on this road .....
By toes in the water (884), southampton on Oct 22, 18 6:55 AM
It’s a scary , barely monitored rd. The speed limit isn’t even a suggestion.go 35 west bound, you’ll be passed like your parked.
By Fred s (3321), Southampton on Oct 22, 18 6:57 AM
Obviously, the honor system hasn’t worked. So that leaves enforcement
By SlimeAlive (1181), Southampton on Oct 22, 18 8:51 AM
What if we regularly send two police cars, side-by-side taking up both lanes, at 35 MPH down CR 39?

They'd cause backups for miles, but accidents would go down!
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8265), HAMPTON BAYS on Oct 22, 18 8:54 AM
There are always so many police cars parked with their engines running. At the fire houses, gas stations, train stations...sometimes for hours at a time...perhaps they could drive 35 mph, one in each direction at a time to set the pace?

One of the most ingenious things was rejected. Two life-size billboards of a police car and officer pointing a radar gun. The real police car would park next to the sign so you would never know if it was real or the billboard.
Unfortunately the billboard looked as if the officer was pointing a gun at motorists, so they were torn down within a week. But everyone slowed down, that's for sure. That was the only thing that actually worked so far.

Ingenious? You think that anyone with intelligence authorized them.
"PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY" says much more than "STOP OR I'LL SHOOT"
By deepchanel (89), Hampton Bays on Oct 30, 18 11:25 AM
Also, near the Tesla charging station going east,, there was a 35mph speed limit sign on a huge telephone pole with two flashing yellow lights to warn drivers to slow down. The pole was hit by a car and broken in half. You can't make this stuff up.

Death Road 39 is never going to get safer until more traffic lights are installed and the traffic is forced to slow down. Yes, the drive will be unbearable but at least 5 to 10 people a year will not be killed or maimed due to the hideous job the town does in policing this road.

The road is not the problem.

People are.
By Mr. Z (11847), North Sea on Oct 22, 18 10:02 PM
The road is not the entire problem but it does contribute to the problem. Someone jams on their brakes and you are dead in the water. You can either pull into the other lane, and pray there is no one coming, or jump the curb. There is no shoulder. Not the entire problem, but it doesn't help.

I never see any cops anymore on North Hwy. If I do, they are usually passing me.
By bb (922), Hampton Bays on Oct 30, 18 6:18 PM
Install round a bouts.

This accident was caused by a guy turning right on CR39 from Hill Station Road. And he got clocked by a car headed east. Traffic lights would back the highway up to moriches most mornings. Round a bouts would slow the traffic down and allow it to move at a nice pace.
By Draggerman (955), Southampton on Oct 23, 18 8:14 AM
I wonder if the town could potentially face some legal liability for systematically failing to enforce the speed limit on this road.
Why is CR 39 ignored?

Official SH Town vehicle was breaking the law on County Road 39 this morning. The white car took off from the traffic light with a heavy foot. In order for me to keep up with that car, I reached 55mph, before I let off the gas to go back down to a safe 40mph. The white SH Town car is number 1020 ( black stickers on the left bumper) License plate # A (over) J 8509

Point of fact: not every serious accident makes 27 East and/or the Southampton Press. I observed a rollover and it never made the news. I suspect if accidents are cleared quickly and it is a single car accident, it is not newsworthy. So things are worse than you think.

How about just enforcing the laws not just on rt 39 but every where.
By DP (6), southampton on Oct 28, 18 9:10 AM
It doesn't take a brain surgeon but some simple things could help. Keep all trucks in the right lane and enforce it. Do not allow car carriers to on load in the center lane of the road. Make them unload on the car dealers property. Do not allow trucks to back into properties like the laundry, the nurseries, the car dealers, brick and tile, the lumber yards. There should be enough room on the properties for the trucks to turn around. And yes enforce a reasonable speed limit like 40 mph. Add more ...more

Enforce, enforce, enforce. I agree. But that means more cops, more cops, more cops. Which means more taxes, more taxes, more taxes. Just so we are all clear.
By CPalmer (122), Southampton on Oct 30, 18 5:27 PM
If we turned over enforcement to the Quogue PD, the problem would be solved immediately. And that's the truth.
