County Road 39 in Southampton was closed Sunday afternoon from Hampton Road to David Whites Lane after a hit-and-run driver slammed into utility poles on the westbound side of the highway across from Buzz Chew at about 3:40 p.m.

Two poles, one with a transformer on it, were knocked down and landed across the road, according to Southampton Town Police, who did not release the description of the vehicle involved in the crash by press time.

Because the collision occurred near the border between the town and the village, Southampton Village Police also participated in the search. By 4:40 p.m., Village Police were cleared from the scene, according to a dispatch officer.

According to the PSEG LI outage map, about 56 customers were without power for a short time.

The affected area is a predominantly commercial zone, with most businesses closed on Sunday, noted Southampton Town Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Susan Ralph.
