Traffic Light Converted On Montauk Highway In Southampton

Jul 29, 2014 1:14 PM

Motorists are adjusting to a newly converted traffic light on Montauk Highway at the corner of St. Andrews Road, just west of Southampton Village.

The light, according to Southampton Town Director of Transportation and Traffic Safety Tom Neely, was installed last week by the State Department of Transportation following a traffic study of the area. It replaced a flashing yellow light for traffic on Montauk Highway at the intersection.

According to Mr. Neely, residents and business owners from the area last year requested the light, saying it was increasingly difficult to turn onto or off St. Andrews Road and onto Montauk Highway, particularly in the busier summer months or during rush hours. To accommodate the residents, the town put in a request for review from the Department of Transportation, which evaluated the area. At the time, the DOT approved the light change but did not notify Southampton Town when it would go into effect.

The flashing yellow light had remained on the corner to alert residents to the more-trafficked area and local businesses along the stretch of road, which includes smoke shops and other businesses on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. It was also used, Mr. Neely said, by the Southampton Fire Department, which has a substation at the intersection.

The light was officially switched over late last week. This week, Mr. Neely requested that the DOT place signs before the light from both directions notifying drivers of the new traffic control device.

The TRAFFIC LIGHT IS GREAT BUT THE FLASHING YELLOW LIGHT NEEDS TO BE SHUT OFF !!!!!!!

I predict this will have disastrous effects during drive time hours, with traffic backing-up the length of Hill St. Then...good luck making a left westbound onto Hill St from Rosko Dr, Halsey Neck, Captains Neck and Lee Ave.

The timing of the light will likely be such that it very rarely (and only shortly) turns green for those coming off Andrews

The light backs up traffic all the way into the Village of Southampton during afternoon rush hour, backs up traffic into Hampton Bays during morning rush hour -every time a car approaches that light on St. Andrew Road, it turns the light red on Montauk Highway. It is the most ridiculous light placement that DOT has done on the East End. Next there will be a light at every 4 way intersection down Montauk Highway. Now instead of taking an hour to drive the 7 mile trip to and from work every day ...more
