Police Looking For Man Who Stole Handbag From Southampton Village Store

Sep 23, 2014 4:47 PM

Police are looking for a man who stole a designer handbag from the Collette Consignment Store in Southampton Village earlier this month.

The man is believed to have stolen the light brown Hermes Bolide bag from the Main Street store at approximately 3:50 p.m. on September 13. It is unclear how much the bag is worth, but police are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Suffolk County Police and Southampton Village Police are both working to identify the culprit. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Why are multiple police agencies working on the crime of the century here? Reward offered by the police? Is this the first retail store to have been shoplifted from? I don't get it

Who put up the money for the reward? If it was the police, why?

It's ironic that the shop is being sued for selling a similar handbag alleged to be a knock off. From the NY Post, 8/6/14: "Gynecologist Tara Allmen is suing the owner of Southampton shop Collette, saying she bought the pricey bag — which sells for $20,000 new — for $3,425 at the vintage store in 2005, with assurances from store clerks that it was authentic.

Weird, I thought it would 'hinder investigations' and be 'dangerous' to release this information so quickly. Oh wait, HE STOLE A HANDBAG.. It's not like he just ran someone over and killed them or anything as petty as that.

Darn it. Having his picture posted makes this caper all too easy to solve. It takes all the difficulty out of civilian detective work.

On that note, It's interesting that handbag theft is apparently a much more serious offense than home invasions and vehicular manslaughter. This person needs to be brought to justice pronto.

Our tax dollars at work. Meanwhile, my neighbour got hit by a hit and run driver and Southampton Town told him that since there was no witnesses, he was lieing about it, it didn't happen, case solved. That bruise on his back from the impact and the broken arm: not sure how the cop thought he got those...Collettes should put in some cameras. They are constantly reporting that things have been stolen.
