Fire district plans well received by Southampton Town Planning Board

Mar 11, 2009 11:29 AM

A plan to construct a firehouse for the Southampton Fire District was well received by members of the Southampton Town Planning Board at a meeting on Thursday, March 5.

The plan was presented in a work session because a formal application has not yet been made.

The fire district is still in discussions with the current owner of the property, according to Wayne Bruyn, the attorney representing the fire district. The purchase will be finalized once a three-lot subdivision of the property receives Planning Board approval.

Mr. Bruyn said he is not sure when the subdivision will be approved, but that it should be finalized within a month or two. He said that once the subdivision is approved, the district will submit the application.

The new firehouse is proposed to be on a 1.9-acre lot on North Sea Road. The lot is already cleared and has no existing structures on it, according to Paul Rogers, an architect with Chaleff and Rogers of Water Mill. The proposed design of the building, which will be approximately 16,000 square feet, will allow firefighters to drive their vehicles through the building. There will also be a parking lot big enough for 61 cars.

After Mr. Rogers’s presentation, Planning Board members said they were pleased with the design.

“This is very well thought out,” said chairman Dennis Finnerty. “The building is attractive.”

Last time I checked the Southampton Community was covered by the Southampton Fire Department. These "Fire Commissioners" are a board to make sure our Southampton Town Tax Dollars are collected and spent well correct? Then why are they looking to spend our money on another Firehouse when we already have three are are being covered with the best service around?
Do the five members really need a building that big to hold meetings in?
They have ...more
