Southampton Starbucks to close on April 24

Apr 15, 2009 11:53 AM

The Starbucks in Southampton will close its doors on Friday, April 24, and the coffee shop’s employees are being transferred to other locations, including the three remaining Starbucks on the South Fork in East Hampton, Bridgehampton and Hampton Bays.

No employee was willing to speak to the media, because they have been instructed by the company’s corporate office not to comment. Spokespeople for Starbucks refused this week to speak about the Southampton shop.

A sign at the store and cards being handed out by staff indicate their last day is April 24.

Starbucks Coffee Company announced in July that it would close 600 U.S. stores, and the Southampton Starbucks on County Road 39 was among them. In January, the coffee giant announced it would pull the plug on an additional 300 underperforming stores, including 200 in the United States. The remaining Starbucks on the South Fork are not among the shops scheduled to close.

The Bridgehampton Starbucks opened in 2000 after some opposition from local food and beverage retailers and residents. Two years later, the Hampton Bays Starbucks followed.

The Southampton Starbucks came in 2005, replacing another coffee shop chain, Chock Full o’Nuts.

That location has always been a failure. It's just too hard to get into. I think the best restaurant they had there was The Greasy Spoon.

I do think a more traditional coffeehouse -- with folk music and poetry readings, for example -- could work well there.

How about a half-way house for bigots like faceless and Ms. Jane Q?

I don't think it would be big enough to fit their ignorance and egos peoplefirst.
But I can't say its all their fault, thats what news channels like Fox News portrays and they dont' know any better, they are ignorant about the issue and need to be educated.
Now back on the real topic for this article, its a tough place to go in an out of as Mr. Suffolk suggested, that and Starbucks is too expensive specially in these tough times.

Legend has it that a ghost was trapped in the Old Hirams Hot Dog freezer and placed a curse on the building and any future business that would try and run there.
