Seized Mexican restaurant reopens

Jul 29, 2009 10:42 AM

La Hacienda, a Mexican restaurant in Southampton Village, reopened on Saturday, July 25, more than two weeks after it was seized by New York State for delinquent tax payments.

The State Department of Taxation and Finance shut the restaurant down on July 9 on three outstanding tax warrants issued since December totaling $17,427. The restaurant had also been seized in October 2008 for failing to pay $20,836 in outstanding taxes, but reopened a few days later when a deal was struck with taxation and finance officials to satisfy the debt. Owner Delia Hernandez said Monday that she fell behind on her payment plan to pay off the $20,836 and she fell behind on subsequent tax debts because the poor state of the economy put a strain on her business.

Ms. Hernandez said she gave the Department of Taxation and Finance $8,000 toward her tax debt to get the keys to her restaurant back and agreed to a new payment plan to satisfy the rest of her debt.

Regular customers were happy to see the restaurant reopen over the weekend and have been spreading the word to others, Ms. Hernandez said.
