Public meeting on new Southampton Village firehouse is Wednesday

Sep 18, 2009 5:11 PM

The Southampton Village trustees and the fire department will host a public meeting on the proposed $5.9 million Hampton Road Firehouse this Wednesday, September 23.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the firehouse, and the members of the Southampton Fire Department, along with the architect designing the new structure, Dominic LaPierre of Ashley McGraw Architects in Aquebogue, will give a presentation and answer questions from the public.

There will be a referendum on the $5.9 million bond to fund the firehouse construction on October 9.

If the project is approved by voters, a village property owner whose house is assessed at $1 million would see a property tax increase of $48 a year, or $4 per month.

The new firehouse is proposed to be 14,000 square feet, more than three times larger than the current 4,500-square-foot firehouse.

The new two-floor firehouse would have a partial basement, four bays for the village’s fire trucks, a multipurpose room, a conference room, and a gear room where firefighters would be able to gear up before heading to a blaze.

Does the village really need a new firehouse in these hard economic times? How will it be funded? If any of that funding is provided by town, county, state taxpayer money then the firhouse should not be built. I'm sure the current firehouse is functional. Heck, if need be, put the firetrucks in a barn to save money!

OK, Walt. We can put the firetrucks in an old potato barn... Do you understand what a "Bond" is? As for Hampton Road being functional, it does not meet the minimum OSHA requirements. Is that functional, Walt? Do you even live in the Village of Southampton?

What I find is that there is a lot of ignorance among taxpayers concerning the fire department. 'Ignorance' is not an insult, they are just unaware of the facts.

For example, the larger equipment purchased by the fire department lowers the ISO rating for every homeowner who in return saves on their homeowners insurance. The estimated tax increase for the firehouse is $50/1M. So you can pay $50/yr to the faceless insurance company on higher premiums due to lower ISO rating, or your can ...more

to correct the above, it was stated in a *comment* on the other article that "Water Mill is the next step", not in the article itself. 27east needs an 'edit' button!

Instead of complaining endlessly and saying you will not support the new firehouse, why dont you go to the information meeting at the firehouse and that way you can see the problems up close. Then you can make up your mind. Many of these problems, you cannot see from the outside and wouldn't even know about them unless YOU volunteered and saw them up close. The vounteers are the ones who save YOUR property and the ones who give up their time for YOU, so why not give them a fair chance. If you are ...more
