The trial of Anthony Oddone on murder charges for strangling Southampton native Andrew Reister will begin in a Riverhead courtroom next Tuesday, September 29, when jury selection begins.

Mr. Oddone, 26, of Farmingville faces charges of intentionally murdering Mr. Reister, a 40-year old father of two and a Suffolk County Department of Corrections officer, during a struggle in a Southampton Village bar, where Mr. Reister was moonlighting as a bouncer.

A final pre-trial hearing will take place Thursday, September 24, which will address whether Mr. Oddone’s prior criminal record can be discussed in front of the jury. Judge Randall C. Hinrichs issued rulings in two other pre-trial hearings last month.

On Monday both sides will be in court to discuss logistics of the jury selection, including how Mr. Reister’s career as a corrections officer can be discussed without biasing prospective jurors.

Jury selection will begin on Tuesday. Mr. Oddone’s attorney, Sarita Kedia, said there’s no way to predict how long jury selection could take but that it could conceivably take a week to complete.

Judge Hinrichs is expected to start the trial as soon as the jury is seated.

Mr. Oddone and Mr. Reister clashed in the Southampton Publick House on August 6, 2008 after Mr. Reister ordered Mr. Oddone to stop dancing on top of a table, according to police. Mr. Oddone, a military veteran and caddy at The Bridge golf course in Noyac, held Mr. Reister in a chokehold well after he had fallen unconscious, according to accounts of the incident, and then fled the scene in taxicab. Mr. Reister lay in a coma for two days before he was pronounced dead on August 9.

Mr. Oddone has been held for the last 13 months at the New York City Jail on Rikers Island.

When I heard about this horrific act, it really upset me. My deepest sympathy goes out to his entire family because this man was taken away at such a young age, and was loved by so many. I didnt know him, but what I read he really sounded like a awesome guy, who made friends with anybody he came into contact with. On a different note, I dont understand why no one was able to stop this from happening. If i was there I would have jumped in to stop this moron. Shame on whoever watched this unfold ...more

letskeepitreal I agree with you. They should lock this guy up and throw away the key

And of course he'll get a fair trial in this particular climate.

I agree with letskeepitreal : There wasn't anybody in that bar that night man enough to break that fight up ? I woud have smashed a heavy bottle over that dirt bags head to make him release Reister from the choke hold.

I do not know the facts of THIS case but I do know that real life is not like the WWE where it takes a guy 2 minutes to go oit in a sleeper hold. If you get a person in the right hold you can snap his neck in a secound.

BS INS ! You wouldn't resort to using deadly force to stop a persons death ?
By PrivateerMatt (390), Weesuck Creek , EQ on Sep 23, 09 12:48 PM
ins and razza - he killed a man - this was not self defense and he deserves what he gets - all he had to do was get down from a table - thats it but instead he had to act like an idiot - children lost their father a wife lost her husband - He wasnt in danger of death from Andrew - anyone who knew Andrew could tell you that

jacks. I never said self defense and for the record I agree with you 100%.

Privateer, Ins is right trying to pull him off in the manner descirbed may have made the grip tighter but hindsight is 20 20. If they broke a bottle over his head to break the grip the person breaking the bottle would be sued and possibly be in jail. Bottom line is no one knew Andrew would die if they did I'm sure situation would have been handled differently. Oddone deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars although I highly doubt he will

I think this case should be a lesson to all 'bouncers' or whatever they want to call themselves out there. Dont put your hands on other people, no matter the reasons might be. You never know who youre dealing with and what the end result could be. They should have just called the cops.

Also, i didnt know correctional officers or cops were allowed to work these sorts of side jobs in the first place.

He was an ID checker not a bouncer.Get your facts straight Mr.
By PrivateerMatt (390), Weesuck Creek , EQ on Sep 23, 09 3:43 PM
ok, then what are "ID checkers" doing getting into altercations with bar patrons at 1am? As sorry as i am for this mans family i feel like there is more to the story...other than some psycho randomly choking people out....

slammin are you serious?? I guess bars or clubs should have no bouncers or anyone to check ID. There is risk whenever drugs and alcohal are involved and bouncers are there to hopefully keep control. What Oddone did is unexcusable .
By razza5350 (1911), East Hampton on Sep 23, 09 9:13 PM
Not sure where i said that ID checkers or bouncers werent needed....if reister was merely an ID checker than what was he doing ordering patrons around to get off tables? That sounds like the job of a bouncer to me.....

You dont know the facts of the case except that someone died, so your 'unexcusable' comment really doesnt hold water right now.

Hey INS keep the stupid comments to yourself. Andrew was a great friend of mine and to see ur comments it's pretty disturbing and selfish to try to be the center of attention. Chock holds, dirt bags and not being man enough is besides the fact. He was a great man, father, husband and dedicated man to his community. So please stop with the stupid comments! Thank You
