Reports of smoke bring emergency crews to Parrish

Oct 14, 2009 12:14 PM

Southampton Village emergency crews were called to the Parrish Art Museum on Jobs Lane at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday to investigate reports of smoke in the concert hall.

Southampton Village Fire Chief Roy “Buddy” Wines said that the museum’s heating system most likely produced the smoke, which was also seen in the basement.

Museum Director Terrie Sultan said the noticed the smoke, called the fire department and evacuated the building. About 15 staff members, including Ms. Sultan, stood outside under umbrellas as firefighters searched the building. Firefighters also examined the roof from a hook and ladder truck.

Chief Wines said that fire department members shut down all of the systems in the museum to figure out what caused the smoke. The investigation led the department to believe the boiler might have been to blame.

Ms. Sultan said none of the artwork in the museum was damaged by the smoke and no one was injured.

The Southampton Fire Department, Southampton Village Police and Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance were at the scene. Chief Wines said that about 11 trucks were on standby. At least 50 fire department members were on scene.
