Southampton Town Board delays reorganization meeting

Jan 6, 2010 9:58 AM

The Southampton Town Board rescheduled its reorganization meeting, originally set to take place on Tuesday, January 5, to Friday, January 8, at 10 a.m. in Town Hall on Hampton Road in Southampton Village.

According to a press release issued by Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, Friday is the first day that all of the Town Board members will be available to meet.

During the meeting, the Town Board will set its meeting dates for the year, select the newspapers of record and approve any new staff members it is hiring, among other perfunctory resolutions.

Whoa, this is a pretty inauspicious start to the new administration.

Wasn't the 1/5/10 1 PM meeting on the town calendar for a while?

Who is out of town, and can't make it tomorrow? Are we paying people to miss very important organizational meetings because of a personal scheduling conflict? What's up?

The press release mentioned above is not on the Town site yet. Wonder if it gives any reason for this SNAFU?

Come on Anna, grab the reins!

God forbid that a Town Council meeting should take precedence over something really important. This postponement comes on the heels of two successive Town Council meetings in December for which quorums could not be mustered due to absenteeism. (One of those absent was Supervisor-in-Waiting Anna Throne Holst.)

Let's see what has happened to date:

1) Two successive Town Council Meetings without a quorum.
2) Anna Throne-Holst announces that more Town employees will be allowed ...more

Wow, the critics are in full bloom. Life happens and meetings can get cancelled, I don't suppose these people will ever like or approve of anything ATH does, they will be negative throughout!!

mammadukes,

My comment was not at all directed at Anna. I assume she is fully ready to meet tomorrow.

Rather, I am wondering who else is unable to attend tomorrow? Could this (sudden unavailability) be the first shot across the bow by the anti-ATH crowd?

I fully support Anna Throne-Holst and her efforts to change the course of the ship of state of Southampton Town.

highhatsize makes a good point in general IMO, as the recent record (regarding the Town Board recognizing ...more

PS -- still no press releases on this on the Town site.

How is the public to be informed when a meeting is changed, if press releases are not posted immediately?

Editor -- could you please post the text of the press release postponing the meeting?

Take the reins, Anna!

I hope we don't have another blizzard!

Maybe they should just postpone everything until after the special election (tongue in cheek). With the exception of routine business, what is going to be accomplished?

RIP, Harris Palmer.

The next Town Board meeting listed is for 1 PM on Tuesday 1/12, not this Friday per the article above.

The meeting for today has been removed from the calendar. No press release on Town site.

This is a joke. Can we have an election do-over?
By SusieD (115), Southampton on Jan 5, 10 11:02 AM
Any of you folks bother to call a board member if you are so concerned?
By Terry (380), Southampton on Jan 5, 10 1:35 PM
I certainly wish Anna well as the first concern of everyone should be the state of the Town - regardless of who is running it.
I would say HHS raises some good points - the automobile business is interesting;40 cars? how many Town employees are there? I'm not sure I have this right but its something like 475 full time equivalents - (Not sure if that includes the STPD) thats almost one employee in ten has a car??? Come on, that's way out of line.
The first major test will be how she handles ...more

Thanks Brendan for the press release. Note that this was issued by ATH on 12/28/09 before she was officially sworn in, a proactive and thoughtful move to give everyone notice.

Now is the time for the Town to issue its own official press release on its website, AND to add the Friday 1/7/10 meeting to the Town Calendar.
By PBR (4956), Southampton on Jan 5, 10 5:15 PM
Whoops, Friday is 1/8/10.

Did former councilwoman "Trust Sally" Pope give her last paycheck back to the Town since she obviously quit after the election. (see Southampton Press) When did she clean out her office?
By nellie (451), charleston on Jan 5, 10 6:06 PM
For the record, Sally Pope worked every day after the election including the last marathon meeting of the Town Board. She was active on all the issues to be decided and took absolutely no time off from her duties post election. You could have looked at the records at Town Hall instead of hurling an obvious and unnecessary untruth at a very hard working and dedicated (short tenure) public official. She did not shirk her obligations and set a fine example for others to follow. Again for the record ...more

The PDF press release by ATH was issued on 12/28/09.

Which member(s) of the Town Board knew, over one week in advance (therefore not weather related), that he or she could not make the organizational meeting scheduled for 1 PM today?

Please identify yourself and post your reasons for delaying the organizational meeting to Friday 1/8 or Tuesday 1/12, whichever it is. Please issue official press release on the town site, and update the meeting calendar and Board agenda at your earliest ...more
By PBR (4956), Southampton on Jan 5, 10 6:31 PM
The Town calendar has been updated to show the Friday organizational meeting at 10 AM and a work session at 1 PM.

It will be interesting in my opinion to find out the details of all this shuffling about. Perhaps tomorrow's Press will provide some insight.

Are there any legal requirements for the notice which must be given for a Town Board meeting, in order for that meeting to have legal validity? Is two days notice (without a press release on the Town site) proper notice to inform ...more
By PBR (4956), Southampton on Jan 6, 10 4:01 PM
Believe what you want about Sally but she was the most uninformed and inept councilperson in years. The voters have spoken. No loss.
By nellie (451), charleston on Jan 6, 10 10:14 PM
Still no agendas posted for tomorrow's meetings.

Come on Anna, grab the reins!
By PBR (4956), Southampton on Jan 7, 10 7:53 AM
Work session agenda has been posted, and times posted on the home page calendar area at top right.
