Special election date set by Southampton Town Board

Jan 8, 2010 5:14 PM

The Southampton Town Board voted unanimously Friday to schedule a special election on Tuesday, March 9, to fill the seat vacated by Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst.

Ms. Throne-Holst was a councilwoman on the Town Board up until she assumed her new post as supervisor on January 1. Town law stipulates that once a seat on the Town Board becomes empty, a special election must be held between 60 and 90 days from the date of the vacancy.

So far, Bridget Fleming has emerged as the frontrunner for the Southampton Town Democratic Committee nomination. Four candidates—Dr. Tod Granger of Noyac, Rebecca Molinaro of Remsenburg, William Hughes of Hampton Bays and Scott Horowitz of East Quogue—are vying for the Republican nod.

The Republicans will select their candidate next Wednesday, January 13, during their committee meeting at Villa Tuscano in Hampton Bays at 7 p.m.

Does the Independent Party get to run someone?

Go Bridget Go! :)

Go where? Yes she is bright and articulate but seems to be too much NYC. This job requires someone with a lot of LOCAL experience.

Nellie of WHERE? You don't seem very well-positioned to be questioning someone else's lack of local experience. What this job requires is competence, wherever it comes from, and Ms. Fleming appears to have that.

Nellie of southampton town taxpayer. Personal attacks are not necessary.
By nellie (451), charleston on Jan 11, 10 4:28 PM

It's wholly inaccurate to call my comment a personal attack. You identified yourself as being from "Charleston", a location unknown in the East End, and yet you questioned Bridget Fleming's alleged lack of "LOCAL experience" (your capitals). I simply pointed out the apparent inconsistency between these two components of your statement. Please don't distort my comment.

Moreover, I repeat that what's needed here is competence, which Ms. Fleming possesses in abundance. As far as ...more

I am sorry that you cannot see that your response was personal. However, I will not waste anymore of your time or mine on it. You should note that I am not running for office Bridget is and I do not think she has enough LOCAL experience with the important issues facing our town as other potential candidates do.

If you choose to withdraw from the discusion, that's your right, but my comment was based on logic, not personal considerations, and only someone who is exceptionally defensive would call it an "attack", as you did. On the substance, you haven't demonstrated why local experience trumps competence, especially given the dismal failure of the locals Skip Heaney and Linda Kabot.

Unfortunately with you, this is not a discussion. Your "logic" is to make personal attacks against those who disagree with you. Pretty sad. If you don't know why local experience is important I cannot help you. It cannot be more obvious.

I note that you are "nellie (sag harbor)" now. What happened to "nellie (charleston)"?

I was impressed with Fleming back in the fall elections, she brings a lot to the table.

Is Bridget Fleming running unopossed?
By EastEnd68 (888), Westhampton on Jan 13, 10 10:20 AM
Wishful thinking perhaps? No Flemming will not be unopposed. The Republicans will meet tonite to select their candidate. Should be interesting as there are very good canddates to choose from. Not clear there is a friont runner yet, so there will be a tough choice to be made. Good postion for the party to be in.

The election does not seem fair-since the seat was left vacant by a democrat only democrats should be allowed to fill it.

I just hope whoever it is can see to it that Montauk Highway is plowed on a timely basis. What has happened to snow removal in this town over the last 5 years is a disgrace.
