Broderick to star in Hamptons-based sitcom

Feb 2, 2010 2:01 PM

Matthew Broderick will star in a sitcom pilot about a famous writer hired to run a Hamptons newspaper, the entertainment trade magazine Variety reported on Monday.

There is no indication yet if the NBC comedy, titled “Beach Lane,” will be shot on location on the East End or when production will begin, but Mr. Broderick, who will play a “celebrity author brought in by an irresponsible millionaire to run his struggling small-town Hamptons newspaper,” according to Variety, is already familiar with the area—he owns a home on the South Fork with his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker.

The pilot was written by “NewsRadio” scribe Paul Simms, who will also serve as executive producer on the series along with “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” producers Marci Klein and Lorne Michaels. Mr. Broderick, who is seldom seen on television save for “Ferris Bueller” airings and at awards shows, last appeared on the small screen in “30 Rock,” guest starring as Bush administration appointee Cooter Burger.

If the “Beach Lane” pilot is picked up for a season, it will be Universal Media Studios’ second series based on life in the Hamptons. Last summer its subsidiary, Universal Cable Productions, added “Royal Pains” to the USA network lineup. Much of the pilot of “Royal Pains,” an hour-long comedy about a concierge doctor, was shot in and around Southampton Village, Bridgehampton and elsewhere on the South Fork.

I think Mr. Simms got his inspiration by reading this rag.

Oh, and you don't read this "rag" but take the time to leave comments?

Maybe they'll even bash our local, elite interlopers a bit, like "Royal Pains" did...

I think the inspiration came from Jerry Della Femina.

Every time I see the name Matthew Broderick I think of the 2 women who died as a result of his drunk driving while in Ireland some years back. In addition to causing their deaths, he never said I'm sorry to their families, did not attend their funerals and made no provisions to the families for his drunk driving. I find that unforgivable and do not know how he can live with himself, but then, he has not been imbued with a conscience.

skylur44 How do you know all that? Were you over there in Ireland at the scene? Were you with Mr. Brodrick all the time after the accident? If you do not know something from your own experience it's best not to spread rumors. Sometimes they can come back to bite you.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland, Sept. 7— Matthew Broderick, an American stage and film actor, was charged tonight with causing death by reckless driving in an automobile accident last month in which two people were killed.

Mr. Broderick, who is 25 years old, was traveling in Ireland on Aug. 5 with his girlfriend, Jennifer Grey, when his car collided with a vehicle carrying two women. The crash occurred about 80 miles southwest of Belfast, near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.

Wow...hate much? That was over 20 years ago! Was it tragic, certainly. Can they come back? No. But the rest of us must move on.

Not "hate" at all, merely the facts and 2 deaths is not exactly a trivial item nor one that should be forgotten, plus his behavior afterwards was, to say the least, uncaring and appalling considering the damage he caused.
By skylur44 (6), Lake Worth on Feb 3, 10 9:57 AM
skylur, how do you know what he felt - what does uncaring look like to you ? You could cause an accident and kill someone - does not mean you should not be forgiven? An accident is an accident and as it was stated before he had not been drinking

Skylur44: You certainly implied that it wasn't an accident, in fact, you stated: "I think of the 2 women who died AS A RESULT OF HIS DRUNK DRIVING" What is your source for Mr. Broderick being drunk? What is your source for his attitude being "very cavalier"?

All you staunch MB defenders, the facts are he caused an accident that caused the deaths of 2 women and it took him 15 years to meet with the families...do the math. IMO he is a cold uncaring person, the timeline and the facts speak for themselves. Peace out.

Skylur, you're right. No, I don't know him personally - but I see him frequently in NYC...and he is NOT gracious to his fans...rather, he yelled at me on the street for looking at him when I was merely turning to give direction to someone who had stopped me on the street looking for directions. Self centered, ego centric buffoon. And, yes, my family has a house in Ireland - all that has been stated here is truth. The accident referred to is Broderick's Chappaquidick...

To change the subject. Can we suggest our own characters? For example -the surgeon who openly boasts that he never uses licensed landscapers as it costs more; the lady who always 'forgets ' to bring her checkbook from the City, so the house cleaner will have to wait to get paid 'next week'; the homeowner who wants the contractor to do just one more little job then goes into a rage when the bill is higher than the estimate....-I am sure talented local writers can think of many more.

I don't care one way or the other about Michael Broderick but a little online research revealed that no alcohol was involved; the family of the deceased has forgiven him; and, he was scheduled to meet with them years after the accident, (although I don't know if he ever did).

Life is about forgiving, not to be judgemental or bitter about someone elses hardship. That was a long time ago,I remember that incident. It was tragic, but you can't live in that moment. You have to move on, or you'll never be able to function. You can't fault his talent, or his choice of a lovely wife.Do you want to persecute her too! I think they're a great couple, and have a lot to offer. I rest my case!!! move on
