Press News Group has strong showing in New York Press Association contest

Mar 30, 2010 5:21 PM

The Press News Group, which publishes The Southampton Press, The East Hampton Press and The Press of Manorville and The Moriches, won several awards from the New York Press Association at the trade organization’s spring conference in Saratoga Springs last weekend.

All of the news group’s print publications and its website, 27east.com, garnered wins in the association’s 2009 Better Newspaper Contest.

Among newspaper groups and chains, The Press News Group had the second-most total contest points, and The Southampton Press-Eastern Edition had the second-most editorial contest points among individual newspapers. In the general excellence category, The Eastern Edition placed first and The East Hampton Press placed second.

The East Hampton Press placed first for overall design excellence. In the graphic illustration, best obituaries, advertising excellence, coverage of elections/politics and coverage of the arts categories, The East Hampton Press came in second, and for best front page, third place.

In the college division, East Hampton Press staff writer Erin Geismar had the best news story for an article she wrote while editor-in-chief of The Ithacan at Ithaca College.

The Southampton Press-Eastern Edition earned first place for best front page and coverage of crime/police/courts.

“The newspaper showed a big commitment to police/crime/courts,” the judges said. The Anthony Oddone murder trial “was among the best court stories in this category. Also, interviewing jurors after the murder trial shed an interesting perspective on the trial for readers.”

The eastern edition also earned second place for coverage of local government and coverage of the environment, and third place for headline writing, overall design excellence and photographic excellence.

The Southampton Press-Western Edition placed first for best editorial page and coverage of the arts, and second for editorial writing. The judges complimented the Western Edition on “Editorials that take seriously the press’ responsibility to speak truth—sometimes uncomfortable truth—to power. Hard changing, great advocacy from this paper.”

The Press of Manorville and The Moriches earned second place for overall design excellence and third for advertising excellence.

Press staffers placed first in many categories: staff writer Michael Wright won first place in the news story category for his article “Murder in North Haven: One Suspect, No Arrests” about the unsolved murder of Jessie Burke; Residence editor Dawn Watson had a first place arts photo; Gavin Menu had the best sports action photo; sports editor Cailin Riley won for sports feature photo; and Jennett Meriden Russell won the editorial cartoon category.

There were also a few third place finishes among staffers including Oliver Peterson for sports feature story, Brendan O’Reilly for spot news photo and feature story and Reynolds Dodson for best column.

The Press’s seasonal publications, “Hamptons Vacation Guide” and “Fall Escapes,” placed in second and third place, respectively, in the special sections category. The St. Patrick’s Day parade guide took first in the special holiday edition category, and “Hamptons Health and Fitness” won for best special section cover.

As for the web, 27east.com took second place in the best citizen involvement category and third place for best newspaper website.

“The 27east.com website combines breaking news headlines with useful information on restaurants, events and local sports,” the judges commented. “The design is appealing and easy to navigate. One particular highlight—not surprising for the location—is the real estate section which offers some interesting features and tools for buyers and dreamers.”

On the business end, The Southampton Press won second place and The Press of Manorville and The Moriches won third place in the classified advertising category.
