Sag Harbor Mother And Children Injured In Southampton Car Crash

Feb 23, 2011 10:40 AM

A Sag Harbor woman and her two toddlers were injured last week when the SUV they were riding in flipped over on
County Road 39 in Southampton after the 41-year-old
mother fell asleep behind the wheel, Southampton Town Police said.

The woman was driving a black 2010 Toyota Suburban eastbound just east of the Stony Brook-Southampton campus at about 1 p.m. on Friday when the car ran off the road, striking a utility pole and a tree before rolling over and coming to rest upside down in the
bushes about 20 feet off the highway.

All three passengers—the mother and her two 3-year-old sons—were able to get out of the vehicle to the roadside, where they were treated by emergency medical personnel from the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance and Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance corps. The trio were taken to Southampton Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, hospital officials said.

No charges were filed against the woman, who, according to police, told them she had fallen asleep while driving.

The road is fine as long as you're not driving drunk or falling asleep behind the wheel. Nothing wrong with the road, just the idiots who drive on it.

I was traveling on CR39 during the time of accident. As always cars were flying by me like I was standing still, weaving in and out. I'll admit I was doing 40. Cops never patrol east bound traffic. When they do watch west bound traffic they are in the same spot and normally 2 patrol cars side by side talking, not really patrolling with speeders zipping by. They can pay for one patrolman's salary just catching the speeders on 39. Maybe make it a little safer.

I think the difference in speeds is an issue; the people flying and those who are actually at 35 mph.

My business has me going east on Co rd.39 at around 745am twice a week. I have a bumper sticker that says I drive 35 on 39. I count how many cars pass me as a way to occupy myself because at that speed its a little boring. I drive from the Lobster Inn to the railroad tracks and never count less than 30 cars passing me." Never" should be in caps and that is year round. The condiions that allowed Co rd. 39 to have two lanes in both directions require that we drive 35 its simply unsafe otherwise. Every ...more

From North Sea Road to Sunrise speed limits should be enforced and tickets issued until drivers learn. It's the worst road on the east end.

Who falls asleep at the wheel at 1pm?! Two 3 year olds in the back and she still manages to fall asleep at 1 in the afternoon. Seems weird.

The reason that a majority of the people go over the speed limit on Route 39 is because 35mph is an unreasonably slow speed for that road. If you notice, most drivers do 40-45 mph, not because they are reckless, but because that is the "naturally safe" speed. Every road dictates the safe speed by it's design and posted speed limits should be more in tune with that. With that said, anyone going over 45mph has issues. The crazy thing is that some drivers do 35mph on Montauk Highway, where the limit ...more

I drive 39 everyday at least three times between h.bays and southampton. I has to 35 because if you go any faster cars that are exiting businesses can't respond fast enough. You are getting to where you want to go ten times faster then before they added the extra lane. So chill out and do 35
