Southampton Town Board Fails To Appoint New Police Chief

Apr 20, 2011 7:04 AM

A special Southampton Town Board meeting called to appoint a police chief was cancelled Friday morning at the last minute.

Town Board members emerged from a behind-closed-doors executive session to discuss the appointment prior to the scheduled meeting, when Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst said the board was “not prepared” to make a decision.

“Basically, what I have to say is that this was not the outcome I expected today,” she said.

Board members Jim Malone, Chris Nuzzi and Nancy Graboski retreated to their offices and remained behind closed doors.

Mr. Malone and Mr. Nuzzi declined to comment on the meeting. Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming was absent.

“It’s executive session, I’m not going to comment,” Mr. Malone said.

It was unclear when a new chief would be appointed. Current Police Chief James Overton was due to retire at the end of the day Friday. There were two contenders for his position, Town Police Captain Anthony Tenaglia and Southampton Village Police Chief William Wilson.

This Board is a joke! Nothing constructive is ever going to happen if the two very distinct sides do not work together for the good of the community. I am not taking sides as I have very little respect for any of them--but the game playing and sabotaging one another at the expense of the public is upsetting!
By Mrs.Sea (268), Sag Harbor on Apr 15, 11 3:39 PM
Not game playing - wish it were so simple. Working with a very difficult person who does not stick to the same story.

It's all over but the shouting. My secret undercover operatives have unearthed the fact that ATH and Bridget Fleming will vote for Wilson (No surprise there, the STPD/PBA should run up a tailored STPD uniform for ATH just as appreciation. Bridget has to date simply shadowed ATH's votes.) The surprise third and deciding vote will come from Honest Jim Malone. For some reason, the Conservative Party has ordered him to curry favor with the PBA. Time will tell why.

If you thought the STPD/PBA ...more

The conservatives run the Suffolk PD now they will start taking over the Towns. After Wilson is appointed new chief, I bet we will see an incline in conservative registrations among the SHPD and the union will gain even more power and drive personnel costs even further! This vote will determine if Malone is just an Ed Walsh puppet or a real conservative and has the best interest of the taxpayer in mind.

HH is right time will tell and we will find out in the next week or so!

Stop with your political rhetoric! When was the last time you heard of a department head awarding an employment benefit or raise? NEVER!!! Politicians, lawyers and unions negotiate contracts, NOT CHIEFS!! You don’t like what the cops get paid then take it up with the politicians who awarded the raises. By all accounts Tenaglia has been a tough boss, and Wilson has apparently been no picnic for the unions either because the Press has reported at least five department members have gotten the ...more

Lets get real people! Chief Overton announced his retirement on March 9 2011 (OVER a month ago) If they wanted Tenaglia that bad why not just get it over with it and name him the successor March 10? OR IF they wanted to Interview other candidates don't you think over the last 30 days this garbage newspaper would be reporting on and/or naming those other candidates? No. Instead, you hear a week before Overton is retiring, that there is all the sudden two candidates, and a decision will be made fri ...more

Tony Tenaglia has conducted himself for more than 20 years as a professional and efficient manager, he has a spotless record. He clearly should be the new Chief, he did it the old fashion way he earned it. However, it does not look good, the PBA controlled conservative party has pushed Malone in line to vote their guy in, the least experienced Village Chief on the east end. Oh, and lets not forget the famous quote from the queen of the PBA, Anna Throne, as the police bagpipers serenaded her, ...more

Anna is owned by the PBA. Remember they called her after Linda's arrest.

Tenaglia has class and expertise and will stand up to the union, but Anna has been bought, so Tony and the good honest people of Southampton will lose and be subject , once again, to tax increases and incompetence.
By Steven (113), Westhampton on Apr 16, 11 7:01 PM
Tenaglia should get the job. He is a union leader (President) and the police supervisors need a pay raise. They put their lives on the line every day. He is just the guy to get it for them. That is why he founded the superior officers union, they were getting short changed and I agree. And just because he interviewed in recent past for the Police Chiefs Jobs at Southampton Village and East Quogue and didn't get it shouldn't be held against him. If he gets promoted, so what if the entire department ...more

$114k - $149k (Detective - Captain) a year, plus benefits, overtime, AND a pension, is "shortchanged"? The SHTPD Captain got a $4k raise, compared to last year's budget. If he gets the job, it's a $17k a year raise, to fill the position. Total base salaries for the year 2011 are $10,180,000

I agree that he's the best "in house" guy for the job, but these guys are really pushing it with compensation. Most of the people they are sworn "to protect, and serve", make less than $60k a year. ...more

I doesn't make any sense for Robert Mark Epley to run for Town Supervisor unless he can control the Town Police Department first. Thats why you have the Village Police Chief becoming the Town Police Chief.

Think it is sad to think that after all these years with the police department this is CaptainTenaglia's legacy. One of dislike, bullying, and an ego bigger than his problems. That fact that no one supports this man is an obvious vote of no confidence by the rank and file of that department. What politician would ever get behind him now. Tony Tenaglia ran a tight and strict ship at SHTPD. Rank and file want some of the rules relaxed, so in comes Wilson. Note to Malone, most PBA members live outside the Township, so don't think Jim there's votes for you when you go for your "Judgeship". Malone has let us down during his reign, he never calls people back, he has turned his back on friends and party members, didn't re-elect supporters to conservation dept, he'll be a real slime disrespecting a man who gave his life/career to the Town. ...more

I have not had time to speak with Nuzzi or Grabowski because I have spent all my time trying to find out where to apply for that job as chief of police for East Quogue you were telling me about. Tenaglia and any of his "Superior Officer" friends & cronies need to just retire now. They have spat in the face of the Rank & File for years w/ their
elitist attitudes and BS. Dump em now & let more of the real SH Town Police apply for this position. Tenaglia has many, many skeletons, and his "Superior" attitude. Put him out to pasture where he belongs.

Read some of the articles it seems that it was ATH, Bridget and Jim Malone who is lookining to appoint Wilson as Chief Not the GOP.
BTW who in the rand and file would you like to see get appointed to Chief?
Its ok with you that ATH has been bought and sold by the SHPBA.
By reg rep (408), Southampton on Apr 20, 11 7:10 PM
Like your point reg rep! G sounds like a disgruntled officer who doesnt like to take orders. I believe the SHPD has been run smoothly during the Overton regime. Never hear of any problems like you do of the surrounding villages. That shows a good reflection on Tenaglias part since he was Overtons right hand man. Dont fix it if its not broke. The only reason PBA wants new blood is because they want set 12 hour tours. Overton and Tenaglia have denied the request for years and for good reasons!!!!

The conservative party leader threatens not to cross endorse or support a member of the SH town board if they do not support Wilson for Chief? If this is true what a disgrace ATH, Bridget and Jim Malone are.

I loved the poster, "G", who asserted that the morally superior non-coms should take over the positions held by the "elitist" brass. While not entirely out of sympathy with the idea that non-coms should be promoted to fill the positions of departing twenty-year plus supernumeraries, the idea that the blueshirts who mobbed the Town Council meeting to intimidate the Council are a higher order of ethical being is a side-splitter that rivals the Abbot and Costello "Who's on 1st" routine.

By GoldenBoy (351), EastEnd on Apr 21, 11 9:05 AM
Aside from his blocking Tenagalia's appointment - according to the Town Hall grapevine, why doesn't Jim Malone spend more time at Town Hall? He's never there except for required meetings. He's still working a full time 9 to 5 job, M-F elsewhere, yet he's collecting a salary for working part time here. No one can work full time and part time during the same hours and on the same days of the week. The voters, and I voted for him, are being shortchanged.
By goldenrod (505), southampton on Apr 21, 11 9:31 AM

Thank you G for opening the door of truth. For a town that longs for transparency, it surprises me that we are not demanding full disclosure from the STPD. It is easy to say that everything is rosy when the elected officials, public and media are kept in the dark by the brass.
