Young Man Surrenders To Police After Fleeing In Springs

Oct 2, 2012 5:54 PM

An 18-year-old East Hampton resident surrendered to East Hampton Town Police on Friday after a pursuit that involved a Suffolk County Police helicopter, a New York State Police K-9 patrol, Town Police officers and a public alert.

Justin Cruz was charged at 12:30 a.m. at police headquarters in Wainscott with escape and criminal possession of stolen property, two misdemeanors. The arrest followed a September 25 report of a stolen iPhone, according to East Hampton Town Police. They were arresting Mr. Cruz on Cedar Drive at 8:20 a.m. on a charge of possession of stolen property when he reportedly escaped from the back of a police car in handcuffs, and the pursuit ensued.

I suppose he stole an I5 to cause such a deployment of police assets...

forget the i5... it must have been Steve Jobs' personal handset. A helicopter? For this? Great use of resources.

"The Fugitive" - who REPORTEDLY and ALLEGEDLY stole a cell phone? We don't even know if it's true that he STOLE it! Helicopters, dogs, STATE POLICE?? If this guy doesn't have anything else against him this massive search for an 18-year-old who 'escaped custody' - now THAT is a felony I think - is such a waste of time because the EHPD has egg on their face --- again. "Police Action" is so over the top in EH. No need to chime in HHS - stick to SHPD unless you're going to come out and say yes, ...more

Perhaps the phone was part of a larger crime?

So the police should just smile and wave as he runs away after being arrested? Lets be realistic, in no way is that ok, no matter what you have been arrested for.

To much use of Police resources? Really? What do you think they should do? Send one cop to look for him? You have to wonder why a person would run like this over a larceny charge, and that is just what the cops would think. Did he have a gun or drugs packaged for sale on him? To not do a good search for him would be very poor Police work. What if there is or was something to this and he ran into a house to hide and held someone against there will. This is the reason for a good search. They have ...more

Any info on his immigraton status?

How embarrassing! The cop who lost him is otherwise an exemplary officer, near the lead in the annual competition for the plaque for most DWI busts. In his defense, it must be said that he is not accustomed to dealing with suspects who aren't drunk.

How do you know who the arresting officer was? Franted I don't read EVERY NEWS SOURCE EVERY DAY like you do ... but I don't recall the name of the officer being printed any where. Please share .... you don't have an axe to grind, politically and otherwise, do you?
By Board Watcher (534), East Hampton on Sep 30, 12 9:46 PM

Hmmmmm .... a paid political "insider"? Not from East Quogue at all ...... ? I live here and I don't know who that officer was ... Again - how do YOU know that HHS and what, really, is your agenda??

BW - if you spent MORE time Watching the boards... you would know he has utter disdain for police and will rip them any chance he gets. He was being sarcastic

Hey east Hampton...consider yourself lucky. Here in Southampton a guy runs over a Nun, kills her and it takes 8 days to get his picture published. And he's still gone.

It may have been 11 days, even worse.

The July 20th article contained the suspect's photo and reward info..

Tomorrow's full moon will be the third since Sister Walsh was left to die on the side of the road on July 9th. This coming Monday 10/1 will mark the 12th week of the investigation.

Have a good weekend.
