OLA Announces Springs School Vote On Latino Parents Committee

Jul 5, 2016 10:59 AM

Springs School was expected hold a vote at its re-organizational meeting Tuesday night on the creation of a Latino Parents Committee, according to Organization Latino-Americana of Eastern Long Island, a non-profit agency that reaches out to Latino communities. However, the Springs School Board of Education and OLA could not confirm on Monday that the voting would definitely take place.

In a July 2 post on its Facebook page, OLA stated the need for such a committee at Springs School. The post urged members of OLA to “spread the word” to those living in and outside of Springs.

“This is a request that OLA, on behalf of Latino Parents, had urged them to do 2 months ago,” the social media statement reads. “It has been a loooooong process … There have been some problems in the past that Springs is working to fix, but who better to have offering you guidance on how best to integrate Latino parents, than LATINO PARENTS!”

For the past four months, members of the Latino community said they have been trying to make their voices heard in the school district. On March 21, parent Carmen Bustamante told the school board and Superintendent John Finello that it’s been difficult to stay informed on school events because meeting agendas and minutes are not translated into Spanish.

The school board, at OLA’s request, began offering Spanish translators at meetings on April 11 in an effort to help the district connect with the Latino community.

Why should they be? Exactly how "welcoming" is the Springs School District supposed to be?

Learn the language!

I am confused. Why is a not for profit "announcing" something a School District is going to do? Is there an Irish Parents Committee? What about an Eastern European Parents Committee? What about a Native American Indian Parent's Committee? Why should there be a special committee for a specific ethnic group? Doesn't that discriminate against all the other groups?

Will the parents be required to be legal citizens to be on the committee? Legal immigrants with roots in the community should be. Legal citizens of this country are guaranteed freedom of association. But the agenda should not be what can the district do for us, rather how can the parents partner in their children's education.
However, people whom entered the country illegally, committed identity fraud to procure employment illegally should not be advising tax payers how to run their school districts. ...more
