Woman Charged With DWI After Crashing Into Tree In Water Mill

Jun 27, 2012 10:54 AM

A Patchogue woman was charged with DWI last week after Southampton Town Police said she drove off the road and struck a tree in Water Mill.

Amanda L. Walters, 21, was driving a red 1999 Hyundai Elantra on Montauk Highway, near Proprietors Lane and Water Mill Cemetery, late last Thursday night, June 21, when the crash occurred, officers said.

Police said they arrested Ms. Walters at 11:54 p.m. and charged her with DWI, a misdemeanor, after they found her to be intoxicated. In addition to performing poorly on field sobriety tests and failing a pre-screen breath test, she admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, they
said. She was also ticketed for moving from her lane unsafely, driving without a license
and driving an uninspected vehicle, all violations, according to her arrest report.

Ms. Walters was taken to Southampton Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries, and upon her release from the hospital, she was taken to police headquarters in Hampton Bays, where she was held for a morning arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court, police said.

Court officials said she was released on her own recognizance and is due back in court at 9 a.m. on July 12.
