Police: Counterfeit Bill Passed In Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays, Southampton

Apr 8, 2015 10:18 AM

At least two men were passing counterfeit bills at drug stores throughout Eastern Long Island last Thursday, April 2, including three locations in Southampton Town.

The first report of counterfeit bills being used came from the Rite Aid in North Bellport, where Suffolk County Police say two men used several fake $100 bills to purchase Visa gift cards at about 11 a.m. Descriptions of the men and the value of the gift cards were not available as of Wednesday morning.

About 45 minutes later, the Westhampton Beach Village Police Department got a report of a man using counterfeit $100 bills at the Rite Aid on Main Street to purchase a balloon and a prepaid MasterCard gift card. Police Chief Trevor Gonce said the man used four fake bills, each with the serial number LB20980171.

After the man left, the store’s manager ran a testing marker across the bill, and the ink identified it as counterfeit, Chief Gonce said, adding that business owners should be on the lookout for other bills bearing this serial number.

Police described the suspect as 6 feet 2 inches tall, black and with a “scruffy” goatee. He had a medium build and was wearing a dark orange sweatshirt and dark pants.

At noon, an employee at the Rite Aid in Hampton Bays caught a man trying to purchase gift cards using five fake $100 bills and called the Southampton Town Police. Unlike in Westhampton Beach store, the Hampton Bays clerk tested the bills before accepting them. A description of the suspect at that store was not available.

Finally, at roughly 12:15 p.m., a man described as being black, 6 feet tall, between the ages of 25 and 30, and with a beard used five counterfeit $100 bills to buy Visa gift cards from the CVS in Southampton Village, according to a press release from Village Police. The man, who was wearing a red sweatshirt and red-and-white sneakers, was able to complete the purchase and leave the store before employees discovered the bills were fake.

Local police departments are investigating the incident along with agents from the U.S. Secret Service outpost in Melville.

Thank God fot the WHB police. I'm not sure if they know they are suppose to call the secret service who are in charge of protecting the currency not the keystone whb cops.
