Schunk And Connolly Win Contested Fire District Races in Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays

Dec 15, 2010 12:19 PM

Westhampton Beach voters elected a new fire commissioner on Tuesday night, while candidates in the Eastport, Flanders and East Quogue fire districts ran in uncontested races.

In Hampton Bays, incumbent fire commissioner Kevin Connolly defeated his opponent, Michael Zarro, by 38 votes—149 to 111. Mr. Connolly is a 30-year veteran of the department and has served as fire commissioner for the past 18 months.

Darryl R. Schunk will be a new face on the Board of Fire Commissioners in the Westhampton Beach Fire District. He ran against Shawn M. Ethier and Stephan A. Frano, and collected 95 of the 228 votes cast. Mr. Frano received 83 votes, while Mr. Ethier received 50 votes. Mr. Schunk will assume the seat that will be vacated in January by Arma “Ham” Andon, who has served in the post for eight years.

In Eastport, incumbent fire commissioner Randy Crennan ran unopposed and won 42 votes and a five-year term. It is unclear if he will remain chairman of the district’s Board of Fire Commissioners because the position tends to rotate, according to Eastport Fire Department spokesman Bud Mazura. The commissioners will make a decision at their next organizational meeting at the beginning of next year.

In East Quogue, fire commissioner James Schaefer garnered 46 votes for a five-year term in office. He ran unopposed.

Official results were not available for the Flanders races. Incumbent Joseph Cavaluzzi ran unopposed for a five-year term after being appointed last year to fill a vacant seat. David Schaffauer also ran unopposed to complete the two years left in Mr. Cavaluzzi’s term.
