Bridget Fleming wins vacant Southampton Town Board seat

SamIAm, a challenge for you. You claim that Bridget received more votes in November compared to this special election. Please find me a special election where the winner received more votes compared to the general election. I'll spare you the effort, you can't do it. Voter turnout in special elections are smaller compared to general electrion turnouts." Mar 10, 10 7:02 AM

Bishop will vote yes on health care reform bill

Yay Cong Bishop. The status quo is unsustainable. Report yesterday that NYS's uninsured grewthis last year by 500,000 and counting. Employers and individual systems cannot afford the current system. Despite the lack of bipartisan support, this bill incorporates many Republican ideas. We will immediately become a better country when Pres Obama signs health care reform. We'll join other industrialized nation with a goal of universal insuance." Mar 19, 10 3:38 PM

Health care reform bill gets mixed reviews on East End

As the SP's editorial pointed out, we are all paying now to provide coverage for the uninsured. At the hospital where I worked before retiring, we received $40,000,000 annually from the NYS Bad Debt and Charity Care Pool. Where do you think that money came from?

Some make the absurd argument that we have "free" universal health care now because uninsured people go to the Emergency Room. Two points -- yes, and they get billed so it is not "free"; and, two, it costs 2X as much for hospitals to provide care in the ER compared to the typical doctor or clinic visit. Well, three points. The $40,000,000 that some of ou provided to the hospital where I worked, most of that came from delivering uncompensated care originating from the emergency room." Apr 1, 10 8:34 AM

Let's follow up on that history lesson Simon. The Bush admin presented another resolution to the UN called the 18th resolution on Iraq which would have activated the prior resolution to which you allude. The resolution was withdrawn when it became apparent that it did not have sec coun support. The French Ambassador to the UN( along with the France) were villfied because he gave an accurate assessment of what lie ahead: a disaster. The Chief weapons inspector, Hans Blix reported one month BEFORE the invasion that he was getting more cooperation from Saddam Hussein regarding WMD. It shouyld be apparent to even the biggest Bush fan by now that the raq war was in the cards from the get go irrespective of facts on the ground. He, Cheney and Rumsfield were all about implementing the neocons "Project for a New American Century (PNAC) which called for the removal of Saddam Hussein long before 9/11. " Apr 1, 10 8:57 AM

Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

The first thing to understand is that undocumented people are here because of the dire economic straits they find themselves in -- and that there are people in America who will hire them. Wages in Mexico have shrunk by 20%. How well do you think the Long Island economy will do if the feds keep shrinking the number of allowable HB-1 and HB-2 work visas? Ask Joe Gergela from the LI Farm Bureau. Most undocumenteds came to US legally under an approved visa, they overstayed their visa, they weren't border hopping. You can build a 1000' border across the Mexican/USA border and we would still have undocumented people here.

These are all reasons why we need comprehensive immigration reform. The system from soup to nuts needs to be repaired, otherwise, 2, 5 10 whatever years from now we'll still be having this same tired debate.

Comp Imm Reform to 1) enforce border, 2) fix INS bureaucracy, 3) stronger enforcement against employers who hire, 4) rational access through HB-1 and HB-2, 5) pathway to citizenship that includes paying back taxes, paying a fine, learning English, passing civics test. This gets the undocumented to the back of the line and under a temp legal statues." May 5, 10 2:58 PM

"The Last Fix" is an intense, moving documentary

GO SEE THIS DOCUMENTARY!

It is fantastic. If you believe in human redemption you'll advocate for a well funded drug court for Southampton Town and for every jurisdiction in America. If you don't believe in human redemption you will after you see this film." May 17, 10 5:09 PM

Schneiderman forgoes congressional run

Tim Bishop deserves re-election. The 3 front-running strangers that are vying for the Republican line can't hold a candle to Tim Bishop. Somehow, I don't quite believe Jay Schneiderman's puffery about any poll he's done. Schneiderman's a phony. Last year it was sweetness & niceties when he needed the Democratic line. Now it's an extreme left wing party when he wants to extol his independence. Baloney Jay. You have as much consistency as a water balloon. " Jul 12, 10 3:24 PM

Southampton Town Board Appoints Wilson As Police Chief

As an outsider, but concerned citizen, my wish was only that the best man (or looking to the future -- woman) be chosen to lead the Town's police department. What I learn about Mr. Tenaglia from a distance, and only through press reports, is a man looking inward, licking wounds, unable to hide his disappointment. What I see from the press reports is a man unable to set aside hurt for the benefit of a larger good -- the morale and professionalism of the police department. Sometimes, no matter was perceived slight or indignity you've suffered, it's best to dig deep into your strength of spirit, sense of self worth and value, and simply say --- I congratulate the new Chief and look forward to helping him make Southampton Town's police department the best it can be. Southampton Town Board Republican-Conservative Majority Holds Off On Key Appointments

Let's see, the town was mired in a financial mess brought about by non-existent financial controls and head-in-the-sand mismanagement. Ms Wright, fortunately for every taxpayer, checks every credit and debit, and every account known to Southampton Town, puts in hours of service, rescues our bond rating saving hundreds of thousands in interest charges and part-timer, county-employee-first Councilman Jim Malone has the nerve to hold up her re-appointment. Disgusting. " Jan 6, 12 4:57 PM

Bishop Touts Affordable Care Act In Sag Harbor

And what makes you think a visit to the ER will necessarily be "affordable," especially if it's a real emergency.

The cost per service visit in the ER is 2X the cost, at least, as it is to see a private physician or clinic doc because ERs are staffed to treat real emergencies. Excessive use of the ER also impacts the efficiency of the ER.
