Suffolk County consumes record amount of water on Friday, Southampton estates lead the way

I am an irrigation contractor that services several large estates in the SH village. As far as the rich using more than their fair share is wrong I think. Many of the estates have water meters just for irrigation. SCWA sold these meters knowing what the output could be at peak and didn't have the distribution system to suport all the 1 1/2" and 2" water services they installed. If you want to talk about the wast of water that is a different story. Many of the systems in the area are very poorly designed. Its easy to say put a rain sensor on the system but that is a drop in the bucket compared to the water wasted by poor lay out of sprinkler heads and the lack of matched precipitation. What would really help is some regulation of the irrigation as a trade so that any hack cant put in a turkey of a system. Also if you are concerned about water quality maybe have our town enforce some of the back flow protection codes that are on the books. many systems go with no protection at all. But it doesn't help that SCWA tells contractors they don't need back flow protection even if the state helf code and plubing code says you do." Jul 18, 10 5:29 PM

I am not sure if you really expect me to put the names of my clients on the internet but I like earning a living so I am not going to. I don't believe that the water needs protecting from the rich, it needs to be handled better by SCWA. Maybe let them put in another well in the village somewhere." Jul 19, 10 7:26 AM

Top Residential Water Consumers On South Fork

I don't want to sound like i don't care about responsible water use but did this national geographic study specifically cite the east end of LI. Maybe some of you remember last year when this drought was happening that we were just recovering from heavy flooding and abnormally high water tables that caused homes in Riverhead to be condemned and Poxabogue pond to be swollen for months. I don't think it was ever a question of a lack of water in the aquifer, I seem to remember last years article in the press quoting SCWA saying something to that effect. I am the owner of an irrigation biz here in Southampton so I see this water use first hand. Although these people use a tremendous amount of water, SCWA sold them the giant water service and then like last summer their system couldn't supply enough water to sustain the pressure through out the village of Southampton. That is not the rich peoples fault its SCWA fault for "over booking" their system.

If you want to conserve water have your local governments pass laws on irrigation system efficiency. There are so many crappy systems out there wasting water and people over watering their lawns because they are un educated on irrigation scheduling. In Texas you have to be licensed by the state, designs must be submitted and reviewed, and systems must be inspected to ensure that efficient irrigating is taking place." Jul 3, 11 10:13 PM

Southampton High School Student Will Not Return To School After Shotgun Arrest, District Says

I graduated in 2000 from SHS and I brought my shot gun to school all the time as did many of the other guys who would shoot before and after school. And when I was in middle school a teacher showed us his pistol after school one day. And we were told stories of how years ago students could bring their long guns into shop to work on them. If the guns are stored in the vehicle in the legal manner (magazine open and ammo locked in a separate box) what's the problem it would be legal if the boy was pulled over and searched." I don't begrudge the SFD a new building. I know it is important, I was once a fireman. But I also had an oportunity to bid n this project. First of all they were supposed to hire local contractors. I think the only local company was Guillo. Second how do you come up with a budget and hire a GC before any of the subs have submited their bids. Third, they have a LEED certified irrigation system that is fundamentally flawed and will take over 100 years to see any savings." Nov 29, 11 7:03 PM
