East End still digging out after record snow

Stronger than average weather events are actually a compelling indicator of global climate change. If you cared to do some research of your own instead of jumping on the "denier" bandwagon driven by those paying obeisance to the oil industry, such as the lovely Ms. Sarah Palin, you would probably already know this." Dec 19, 09 11:27 PM

No one's denying that there are natural fluctuations in climate, just that their rate of occurance and form seem to be diverging from what can be considered "natural". Why risk it?" Dec 20, 09 8:52 PM

Southampton Town analyst says proposed wind turbine would harm environment

Maybe this is why people don't bother to even investigate renewable energy options. Because the town makes it SO difficult to implement or install them that it doesn't become worth the hassle. The "bats and birds" argument is the one that most opponents of wind power fall back on, but I agree with @INS. There are far worse things that occur in this town daily having effects on a much larger scale than the POSSIBLE effects of one residential wind turbine. This is ludicrous. " Dec 22, 09 7:32 PM

Blizzard snarls life on the East End

I must be un-important. My road didn't get plowed until 3 PM today (Tuesday). Quogue, in general, was abysmal with the exception of Montauk Hwy and Jessup Avenue. " Dec 22, 09 7:35 PM

Aren't snow chains illegal here? If not, I'm buying some too." Dec 22, 09 7:38 PM

Shinnecocks are looking at benefits that come with federal recognition

Didn't you post this EXACT same message on the last article about federal recognition for the Shinnecocks? And, for the record, it's "sneak" not "sneek" and "nobody" not "know body". If you're going to be so dramatic at least do it with some intelligence. " Dec 22, 09 8:21 PM

I would imagine that strip mining for coal as an energy source has many similar effects on the ecology of areas near these operations. Not only does a gash in the earth's surface or lopping off the top of a mountain have direct, physical effects on the landscape, but acid mine drainage and trailings contribute to destruction in their own special ways. And I won't even get started on the obscene amounts of water needed for coal mining. And, then, once you've picked it out of the earth and burned it, the emissions it lets out contribute to another whole set of problems. Can you really argue that wind power is worse than this? First Nations... I think that has a nice ring to it. But how long do you have to live somewhere to be considered indigenous or aboriginal or native or even... the Hampton's favorite... "local"? If this is the case is anyone one really indigenous to anywhere considering how the continents have shaped and shifted throughout time? I don't expect you to answer these questions... your post just made me think about this in greater detail. " Dec 23, 09 8:04 PM

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the letters sent by the neighbors to the Conservation Board are available to the public? I find collective will to be an interesting phenomenon and I think it is important to understand all of the objections to this type of project in order to move forward with more like it. We need to start somewhere but it seems like these endeavors just keep getting shot down. I find it very disappointing." Dec 27, 09 2:47 PM

OMG! Politics being influenced by revenge instead of goodwill and justice for all!?!? Someone call the Press! Oh, wait... they already did :)

I think it is fairly obvious in this case that this issue has nothing to do with environmental factors which is why I am curious to see the letters. I'd like to know exactly which neighbors are "influencing" the Conservation Board to ensure this proposal does not make it through." Dec 27, 09 7:11 PM

Your children are lucky to have age-old traditions passed down to them. I think one of the biggest problems facing our youth today is that they have no sense of being part of a culrture or the larger world family. We have managed to build walls between ourselves and the Earth and give no thoughts to how our actions influence others or the environment. I wish your tribe the best of luck in the coming months as the rest of the federal process plays itself out and I hope the outcome brings positive things for your people. You have patiently waited a long time." Dec 28, 09 7:36 AM

A thermal solar heater or PV panels may actually not be as efficient as a wind turbine, it truly depends on the location. In order to meet their energy needs this may be a better option, especially considering they live on the water where wind speeds are generally higher. I personally do not find wind tubines to be an eyesore, certainly no more so than the communications towers that sprout up all over the place. If you want to see an eyesore, check out a coal fired power plant. Or a strip mining operation. " Dec 29, 09 7:31 AM

I'm a single mother and I don't get any of that. I work full time, attend school full time and raise my daughter (with much help from an amazing family). I pay for my own medical, food, rent, electric, phone, car, etc. The only thing I do not pay for is my tuition, for which I receive grant money from the state and federal government. I got a 4.0 this semester so, don't fret, your tax dollars are being well-used. I was denied any benefits from the government because I make "too much money". If you knew how much I make, this would bring you to your knees in laughter- I struggle to pay these bills every month. Do not assume that being a single mother comes with automatic benefits. I am doing ALL the right things, not trying to live off the system, and I am still unable to get help. So, please, think before you make generalized statements that are grossly inaccurate. Thank you for your reply. I am happy knowing that this file IS available for public review. Perhaps there is more compelling evidence than what was presented in this article as to why this proposal is not being supported. I suppose my main concern is that the outcome of this particular issue will set a dangerous precedent for the next time a residential turbine is proposed." Dec 31, 09 10:08 AM

Workers finish dredging Shinnecock Inlet; project comes in $3 million under budget

They're a very large company that is involved in dredge projects all over the world. They are probably able to bid in lower than other companies due to the size of their outfit. Not to mention they have done many projects in the area and are familiar with the lay of the land (or sea for that matter). This is probably not the last time you'll see GLDD around here." Westhampton motel is history following demolition

IMO, using the word "resort" to describe the structures on this property, especially over the last few years, is a massive stretch of the imagination. It WAS an eyesore AND a danger. The grafitti on the house was particularly eyecatching- it really fit in well with the "rural hamlet" character of Westhampton. Perhaps, a few decades ago, these buildings could have been preserved but instead they were left to rot away. Any attempt at restoration, if it were even possible any longer, would have been incredibly costly and labor intensive. Hopefully, something of present value will be built to replace it. Maybe affordable housing?" Jan 16, 10 4:48 PM

Suffolk County will stop using East End trailers to house homeless sex offenders

$90 a day? Whose brilliant idea was that? How are the Nassau County Tax Payers not completely up in arms about this? And are they monitored when they set out on their own to find "shelter"? Perhaps, if they are, then maybe the payout is valid, but if not, this is ludicrous. Wouldn't it just be cheaper to build a dormitory or something? For $90 a day you could live in a hotel with maid service. Or rent a four bedroom house. Every once in awhile I read something that makes my head spin, and this is one of those things." Hooters hoax in Bridgehampton

Well, it's nice to know there are at least a few people left out there with a sense of humor. Personally, I think this is brilliant. What makes it truly funny is that the public reacted exactly as the joke's creator knew they would. There is nothing wrong with a good laugh!" Feb 13, 10 9:14 AM

Stony Brook University will announce drastic cuts to Stony Brook Southampton

Wow, wish I knew about this before I got half-way through my B.A. there." Apr 6, 10 7:23 PM

There is a student rally planned for 2:30 PM today(4/7/10)in the Avram Auditorium at the Southampton Campus. Pres. Stanley is supposed to be attending as well. We are hoping to see as many members of the local community there as possible showing solidarity for our mission to keep this campus open!" Apr 7, 10 9:18 AM

Abrupt and tearful end to Stony Brook Southampton dream

I believe there is a clause in the deed to the property stating it must be used for educational purposes. So, I suppose it will just sit there and moulder until we have to invest ANOTHER $78 million into renovating it AGAIN." Apr 7, 10 7:18 PM

Who is the "they" you are referring to?" Apr 7, 10 8:10 PM

Enrollment was up 54% this year. The school was growing as it was supposed to. We made a choice based on the integrity of the SUNY name and the mission of sustainability that all of us at SBS work towards on a daily basis. There was no "disclaimer" that this was an experiemental program that might shut down at any moment. And the least they could have done was to alert us that they would be closing with enough time to make alternative plans. We found out about this on April 6. Many universities close their application period on February 1st. Some admit on a rolling basis but, by this point, many of those spots are filled. They are essentially button-holing us into attending the main campus so that they do not lose the tuition revenue of 800 students (current and those who would be attending in the fall). Some of our majors are SO specific that we MUST continue within the Stony Brook system. I urge you not to speak for others because I, for one, made my choice very carefully." Apr 8, 10 7:54 PM

Didn't they just open a culinary school in Riverhead?" Apr 8, 10 7:55 PM

I am a Stony Brook Southampton student and I have been working relentlessly towards preserving our campus. If you have any contact information for George Soros, and feel inclined to pass it on, please reply to this message and we can figure out a way to get in touch. Thank you so much for the suggestion!" Stony Brook Southampton students seek $10,000 by end of day for legal fund

Thank you to the Southampton Press and 27east.com for your thorough and constant coverage of our efforts! I speak for all the students when I say we truly appreciate all that you've done!" Apr 16, 10 4:43 PM

Students were not given an opportunity to attend another college. Due to the timing of this announcement the majority of students will be pigeon-holed into attending the Main Campus. Most transfer application deadlines passed months ago. Instead, we are forced to attend, and pay to tuition to, a school that we did not choose to attend. It seems that you are concerned about the way that your money is spent so perhaps you can understand how I would like to have a choice in how I spend mine as well. I will be a senior next semester, I have 10 classes left to earn my degree. Do you think I can transfer to another school, take only 10 classes and they'll give me a degree? No. I am forced to finish my degree at a school that I did not choose to go to or do another two years at some other school, at MY OWN EXPENSE. I have no other option. I will fight tooth and nail to make sure that my voice is heard in this matter." Apr 17, 10 9:44 AM

Officials want to use Southampton Town's Community Preservation Fund to save Stony Brook Southampton

First of all, the claims that the school is "losing" money are being investigated. This has not been proven as a hard fact. Secondly, with enrollment growing at approximately 54% a year (as it did this year) if there is a loss, it will certainly narrow as more students attend the university. The campus is right on track as to where enrollment was anticipated to be with a max capacity of 2,000 students attained by 2013. The school was on a course to do this sooner than than expected. This is not a failed business plan, it is a business plan that has been cut off the vine before it could come to its full fruition. Bottom line? This is not a bail-out, it's an investment in a first-rate educational institution that will provide jobs, education and recreational activities for our local community for years to come." Apr 26, 10 7:30 AM

To all our supporters out there: We invite you to join us tonight, April 28th, at our fundraiser to "Save the College at Southampton" at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett from 7-10 pm. A minimum donation of $10 is requested at the door. There will be live entertainment, fabulous raffles and an update from our local elected officials. Hope to see you there!" Apr 28, 10 7:08 AM
