Supervisor has bone to pick over councilwoman's dog

Seems more than a little unfocused, not to mention mean spirited of Ms. Kabot to go after a harmless little dog during a budget discussion and use it to try to make a colleague look incompetent.

How petty. Does anyone remember Bebe, the Post Office dog? He is burried at the P.O. What a great ambassador for the place he was.

I'm not advocating that everyone starts bringing their pit bulls to work, but small, friendly creatures do no harm, might do some good in the stress reduction department, and shouldn't be a problem.

Talk about wasting time on something that shouldn't be a big deal. But this is the same town that banned outdoor clotheslines. Get a grip, Southampton. There are more important issues to worry about.

Two sites possible for workforce housing in Southampton Village

Wow. We need WORKPLACE houseing? No joke.

Not so long ago this same board REQUIRED a Wickapogue road homeowner to relinquish a CO for a legal, pre-existing affordable apartment as a requirement before they would give approval for a one lot subdivision upon which another big house has been built.

What they told the local family living in the apartment was "we can't allow population density to increase." I'm living in Virginia at the moment in order to spare Southampton Village that terrible fate.

Yes, there is a shortage of affordable options in the village and in the town, because of official policies like the one described above, in addition to the market forces which made speculating with houses a more financially attractive proposition than living in them. " Mar 7, 09 7:03 AM

Fashion designer Tory Burch to demolish Meadow Lane mansion

Is it a beautiful old mansion? Apparently the photographer couldn't manage a walk down the beach to show which house is going to be facing the wrecking ball.

Disposable houses, quite a concept, though." Jul 23, 09 7:05 AM

No new progress in Empire, Alliance talks

This is a perfect example of why a public option for healthcare is necessary. How are American businesses expected to compete economically with other countries that provide this very basic service for their citizens? If there were a public option available, you can bet that insurance companies wouldn't be able to hold the health of our friends and neighbors hostage to corporate greed." Sep 3, 09 7:28 AM

Montauk sidewalk sale cancelled after widespread protest

IOW, the CAC reacted about being bypassed, and an outdated "code" took precedence over the benefit to the communnity of merchants who supported the sale.

How sad. Looks like the CAC and the code both need an overhaul." Sep 10, 09 7:05 AM

Empire doctors will remain in-network

This is a perfect example of why a public option, or at least genuine competition is needed in the health insurance marketplace. If customers felt like they could pick up and go elsewhere for coverage, they would, as it's obvious that Empire exists to provide for their bottom line, not for the health and well being of their clients." President addresses nation and Congress as health care debate continues on East End

What is an insurance company other than a big bureaucracy? When was the last time Mr. Bennet called up a health insurance company for an authorization? Shopped for coverage? Had to think about how to pay for it?

Are insurance companies more entitled to profits than citizens are entitled to health care? Whose side is he on in the crisis with Empire and Southampton Hospital? How about people who lose their coverage when they lose their jobs? How about the numerous part timers on the East End who aren't eligible for group plans through their jobs, no matter how hard they work?

18,000 Americans per year die for lack of health care access. Half of all bankruptcies occur because of a health related issue. Insurance ocmpanies are working for themselves first, customers second. " Sep 14, 09 4:10 PM

East Hampton couple returns woman's missing wallet ... and $2,400

Proposed change to Southampton Village code would allow archers to shoot deer on their property

Honestly, there are better ways to control ticks.

Is this the same village that is urbanized to the point where keeping hens has been prohibited for years?

Are we to believe it is suddenly so rural that hunting deer with bows would not be unsafe?

Let's just clear cut and pave over whatever shrubbery is left that is attracting these nuisances and solve the "problem" of unwanted wildlife altogether.

" Oct 12, 09 12:53 PM

So in one corner you have your tree-hugging bunny/deer let them be free crowd. And in the other corner, a bunch of supposed "expert" archers, hunters, erradicate-them-all crowd.

The real culprits are the board members who decided that it was ok to raise the tax base by approving every developer's application for building permits without a thought to where the local populace (human or animal) would have to shift to. Now, there is not enough open space left, and we are to have arrows whizzing through our airspace in hopes that the deer (tick) poplulation will be sufficently controlled by culling....

If it's the ticks, how does the mayor propose to rid the rabbits and squirrels, racoons, opossums, and feral cats of these pests? Deer aren't the only hosts for them...if they were, we wouldn't need to worry about them moving on to humans, would we?

No, let's be honest and admit that humans have created a problem here, and the fender benders and destroyed shrubbery are convenient excuses for those who are so inclined to enjoy pursuing their practically-tame-by-now prey at a range of the width of the average back yard in the village.

Sure, sounds great. They are 'experts' aren't they? What could possibly go wrong?

Free house up for grabs in North Haven

Another short-sighted policy decision by a myopic municipality.

That house is a pre-existing affordable housing unit. Why not grant a special exception, and allow them to rent it to a local family? Why not allow the house and the land it sits on to be donated to Habitat and given away?

No, they can only sit there, and count their beans (CO's). Much the same thing happened to us in Southampotn Village--the owner was given permission to subdivide only if he would give up a CO on the apartment we occupied at the time. We were told that they were constrained by population density limits from taking any other course of action. Population density limits, yes, let's not retain a 3BR affordable unit, because it can be replaced by an 8000sq' monster. As if it would make a difference.

How stupid, in both situations.

" Oct 17, 09 11:22 AM

OMG look at the photos. Only in the town of Southampton would that be a tear down.

What criminal negligence on the part of local government." Oct 17, 09 11:24 AM

Supreme Court lifts injunction on use of Aldrich Park

Such a lot of emotion on this topic.

If so many "American citizens" are interested in the jobs being "taken" from them, why aren't they standing on the corner looking for them alongside the day laborers? Sorry, but that's where the "day" jobs are found. They must not want such work badly enough to actually stand on the corner and look for it.

The status quo exists for reasons that have little to do with green cards, or hatred, or bigoted thinking, for that matter.

All the energy devoted to getting emotional about would be better directed elsewhere.

Southampton Village police chief rescinds internal rule governing secondary employment

I'm with Chief Wilson.

We don't have the right to know everything about every public servant, and privacy issues are something that everyone should be concerned about and willing to stand up for.

There is no reason that a "policy" should be given the weight of statute, and no reason, in the absence of a local statute, that the local policy should be permitted to exceed state and federal satutes.

Follow the proper procedure, enact a local statute, then see if it holds up in court. These FOILS smack of a witch hunt and are being misused in this instance." Mar 12, 10 7:51 AM

Sunday could be the last day for Fairway

Tiime to rally in support of Dan Murray!

The towns of East Hampton and Southampton did not rescue Poxy from development just because they felt like it. They did it because there was a HUGE PUBLIC OUTCRY when they at first failed to act.

Surely, there are 'outs' in the management contract, if the management company fails to act in the best interest of the towns and their citizens. The citizens want the Fairway to remain. The management company is not fulfilling its obligation to act in the best interest of the citizens in bringing in a tenant from outside the area to usurp a successful business.

And even if Dan Murray closes, and is replaced by the new outfit, patrons of the golf course need not support it---a couple well placed pickets, and chances are they wouldn't sell a single bagel!
