Congressman Tim Bishop: Government Shutdown Was Avoidable, A Matter Of Politics

"liberal/socialist swine"? Really, preliar? Thank you for serving as the perfect example of what Americans hate. You represent a pathetic 5% of the population. A group of fascist, corporatists who fight daily against their own best interests because you are too blinded by hate and ignorance to see otherwise.

Most Americans understand that they are one major family illness away from bankruptcy, ruin and protracted financial misery. Why wouldn't they sign up if they can? No wonder that on the first day the exchange servers are overloaded and there are long wait times.

What have the republicans gained for all of their obstructionism? Nothing. Obamacare is in effect, the deficit is going down, the economy is coming back, all in spite of the republicans' efforts to destroy the economy. 2014 will be a great year for democrats." Oct 1, 13 11:14 AM

Wrong again, capt'n crunch - there is NO exemption for congress
Here’s what the law’s text says: “Notwithstanding any other provision of the law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and Congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are — (I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or (II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an Amendment made by this Act).”

In other words, Congress must use Obamacare.

Another incovenient fact, Capt'n Bagger:

Guess Who Pushed Hard For Obamacare Subsidies For Congress Before Using Those Subsidies To Shutter Government?

Bishop Signs Letter To Speaker Calling For Vote To End Shutdown

For every brain-dead "patriot" that says the teaparty movement is grassroots, here is more proof that you are out of your freaking minds.

"Heritage Action, which has trained 6,000 people it calls sentinels around the country, sent them to open meetings and other events to confront their elected representatives. Its “Defund Obamacare Town Hall Tour,” which began in Fayetteville, Ark., on Aug. 19 and ended 10 days later in Wilmington, Del., drew hundreds at every stop."

Google it, you will find the entire article which explains that the Kock Bros and their fascist friends have been financing this shutdown for months. " Oct 6, 13 1:30 PM

The Tea Party should be called what it is: a domestic terrorist group, funded by corporatist dictators, spending tens of millions of dollars to destroy the government and disenfranchise minority voters with the goal of turning America into a full-fledged Plutocracy. Their acts are not "patriotic", but treasonous and they have more in common with Bashar al-Assad than they do with Thomas Jefferson.

Using hate and fear, they gin up the most simple-minded among us (e.g. capt'n America, preliator, joe hampton,Snerdley, marlinspike, et al) to fight against their own best interests. They are being used like brainless pawns in a seditious act of rebellion against democracy and the American way.

But, like all moron-bazed groups of zealots, they have overplayed their hand. By 2016 this country will be in the hands of Democrats with democracy and sanity restored - for some of us, that is. Those mentioned above will most likely have lost whatever sliver of sanity still remains." Oct 6, 13 1:40 PM

Tuckahoe Parents Concerned Over Future Of District

The school board better start considering their options now. I know a lot of folks in Southampton who resent Tuckahoe. Don't know why, but they do. They do not consider the 2 districts to be one "community" and they're looking out for themselves, which means they're voting no. " Oct 9, 13 5:35 PM

Bishop Signs Letter To Speaker Calling For Vote To End Shutdown

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) blamed tea party Republicans for the government shutdown during a CNN interview on Wednesday, saying Congress never had a shot at defunding Obamacare.

“We started this on a fool’s errand, convincing so many millions of Americans and our supporters that we could defund Obamacare," McCain said.

While McCain didn't name names, he faulted members of Congress -- "tea partiers specifically" -- for wrongly telling "millions of Americans" that Obamacare can be defunded.

That "obviously wouldn’t happen until we had 67 Republican senators to override a presidential veto," McCain said.

McCain denounced the fight to defund Obamacare at the cost of a fiscal impasse even before the govenrment shut down last week. McCain called out Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his anti-Obamacare speech, and said "the people spoke" when they reelected President Barack Obama in 2012.

"We fought as hard as we could in a fair and honest manner and we lost," McCain said. "One of the reasons was because we were in the minority, and in democracies, almost always the majority governs and passes legislation."" Oct 10, 13 10:37 AM

Congressman Tim Bishop: Government Shutdown Was Avoidable, A Matter Of Politics

Every cloud has its sliver lining. The upside of the teparty terrorists failed attempt to destroy our democracy is that their grenade has exploded in their hands.

Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are in hiding. Gallup and Wall Street Journal show that not only has this hostage crisis destroyed the republican party, but it has made the popularity of Obamacare soar by 7% in one month!

President Obama has played these fools like a cheap violin and paved the way for a Democratic Party takeover of the house! You "patriots" think things are bad now, just wait until the dems control House, Senate and Presidency!

Thank you, John McCain for have created these monsters when you nominated Barbie! " Oct 11, 13 8:26 AM

Marlin is the stereotype of the puerile right. His "I'm rubber your glue . . ." approach to debate is the fall back for teaparty patriots and 4th graders nationwide.

Marlin, critical thinking is not a sin." Oct 16, 13 8:33 AM

When Grover Norquist tells Ted Cruz "you owe your party a big apology" the Tea Party has officially ended! Ted Cruz can now take his rightful place alongside Joe McCarthy and Jesse Helms

The only question is who will theycallme, marlinspike, joehampton, capt'n cruch, razza, and their fellow baggers cling to now that these pathetic sheep have lost their shepherd?

The victory is sweet but will be even sweeter when they nominate Ted Cruz for president! " Oct 17, 13 4:45 PM

"It's not fair! The media was mean to us!" Aww, did the media not treat you fairly, you forlorn little Patriot?

You know who really played you for a fool - your savior, Ted Cruz! This worthless little fascist led you all to believe that he would save you from the tyranny of the uninsured signing up for healthcare provided by private insurers and, when the time came for a real filibuster, he cowered in the corner.

Federal Shutdown Hurts Shinnecocks, Threatens Brookhaven Lab

Website issues with ACA nothing more than an invented distraction. The individual mandate fines only apply if a consumer does " not have access to affordable health insurance " if the website does not work and you claim that is your only access, then you will not be penalized. When the webstie does work (which it will, in the meantime you can still use the freaking TELEPHONE) it will be a different story so, no big deal.

Thank you Hertiage Foundation for INVENTING the individual mandate that you now oppose.

From the Heritage Foundation's "A Framework for Reform"

Element #1: Every resident of the U.S. must, by law, be enrolled in an adequate health care plan to cover major health care costs.

This requirement would imply a compact between the U.S. government and its citizens: in return for the government's accepting an obligation to devise a market-based system guaranteeing access to care and protecting all families from financial distress due to the cost of an illness, each individual must agree to obtain a minimum level of protection. This means that, while government would take on the obligation to find ways of guaranteeing care for those Americans unable to obtain protection in the market, perhaps because of chronic health problems or lack of income, Americans with sufficient means would no longer be able to be "free riders" on society by avoiding sensible health insurance expenditures and relying on others to pay for care in an emergency or in retirement."

They are only against it when a black president proposes to the do the same." Oct 22, 13 1:26 PM

Sean Hannity had a show with 3 people, claiming they have all been hurt by the affordable care act. It was all a like. Salon went out and did PERSONAL INTERVIEWS with each of those three people and found out that the ACA would actually HELP THEM!!!! One of the couple's claimed they had to fire people from their company because of the insurance mandate - only, the mandate applies to companies with 50+ empolyees and they only had FIVE!! Another couple claims their insurance premium has sky-rocketed because of Obamacare - but Salon discovered that in their state, they could get health insurance on the exchange for almost 50% LESS!

East Quogue School District Tax Rate Nearly Double Original Estimates

There is a solution to the East End's school tax issues: Every person in every district pays the exact same rate and the money is apportioned to schools based on school size.

The larger solution for the country as a whole: Same idea - only ditch property taxes for a federal school tax paid by all Americans and distributed to schools with each school getting the exact same "per child" allowance. We are the only industrialized democracy that used property taxes - the result: poor schools stay poor

For those that think school consolidation is the magic pill - don't count on iit. The promise of a lower tax rate is a canard that, in many cases, proves false. School's consolidate, taxes remain the same or higher and eduaction does not improve http://www.journal-news.com/news/news/consolidating-districts-may-not-save-schools-money/nSBkn/

UPDATE: Southampton Voters Overwhelmingly Defeat Merger Proposal In Straw Vote Tuesday

One of the best articles I've read yet about this not-yet-ready-for-primetime merger is in Today's southampton patch written by Roger Blaugh. Before you decide how you are going to vote, please read it. Can place the link here as it will be removed." Oct 29, 13 12:54 PM

The failure of the Southampton/Tuckahoe merger is not a failure of policy, it is a failure of message and personalities. The Tuckahoe and Southampton Town Boards operate like authoritarian fiefdoms that have little concern for the serfs that they were elected to represent.

I am quite positive that neither board will take any responsibility for the failure, just as they refuse to take responsibility for the self-inflicted wounds that brought them to this point. Successive Tuckahoe boards have so destroyed community relations with the school that they can no longer count on them to support the schoool and, in turn, the kids.

A merger that focuses solely on tax dollars and the threat of what could be lost, instead of what might have been gained, was doomed to fail." Oct 30, 13 12:54 PM

Tuckahoe Officials Uncertain About Future Of School District

From what I understand, SHHS was charging Tuckahoe a heck of a lot more in tuition per student the WHB and then TUCK granted an exclusive (believing the merger would pass). WASHINGTON -- The (REPUBCLICAN) shutdown that lasted for 16 days last month is expected to cost the U.S. economy between $2 billion and $6 billion in economic output, according to a report by the Office of Management and Budget released Thursday afternoon.

Those figures, culled from independent forecasters, may be a conservative estimate, the authors note. They found that approximately 120,000 fewer private sector jobs were created during the first two weeks of October because of the dual threats of the shutdown and the standoff over the debt ceiling. Forecasters additionally expect fourth quarter real GDP growth to be 0.2 to 0.6 percent lower than what it could have been had the shutdown and debt ceiling fight not taken place.

The report provides the most detailed insight to date into how much damage the shutdown caused. Among the notable findings are the fact that federal employees were furloughed during the shutdown for a combined total of 6.6 million days, and they received $2.0 billion in back pay for work that they never performed. The country's national parks lost roughly $500 million in visitor spending nationwide, while almost $4 billion in tax refunds were delayed because the Internal Revenue Service was shuttered.

A wide range of government programs were affected as well. According to the OMB, "hundreds of patients" were prevented from enrolling in clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health; nearly 6,300 children lost access to Head Start, before private philanthropists stepped in to reopen classrooms; and the Food and Drug Administration delayed "nearly 500 food and feed domestic inspections and roughly 355 food safety inspections under State contracts."" Southampton, Tuckahoe School Boards Still Working Toward Merger

Tuckahoe passed the merger because of the lowered tax rate promised. Thile and LaValle are now talking about figuring how to merge wi th NO tax in crease for Southampton which would mean less to no tax DECREASE for Tuckahoe. You cannot simply say the Tuckahoe vote stands as is if you are going to change the terms!" Nov 15, 13 1:26 PM

The vote was for a merger with a very clearly defined tax decrease. The school's sustainability is a matter of opinion. You must have me mistaken for someone else as I have no personal interest in keeping Westhampton as an option beyond the fact that they have charged us tax payers a heck of a lot less that SH for over 10 years!

A small school may be expensive to operate, but so is a big school that is academically challenged. " Nov 19, 13 4:49 PM

BTW, I am always astonished how quick folks are to completely erase a school district especially as no one is considering the overall impact of property values. Hint: lower taxes do not mean higher home prices nor does being in a poorly performing school district. " Nov 19, 13 4:51 PM
