Southampton Town Board candidate Fleming receives Independence endorsement

Are the issues facing the town political issues? Will the financial mess, open space/ development, property taxes, immigration issues, preservation of the beaches and resource management be resolved by a single party?

I think they( political parties) get in the way. Small town government can find answers to questions and enact legislation that will be to the benefit of a majority of residents. It can also assess and mitigate any percieved negative impact on the minority.

Forget about these party leaders and the baloon filled conventions they hold in local restaurants. Prioritize a list of needs facing the town and tackle them in a rational, orderly fashion. Anyone that needs to follow a party line or votes in a strict party line fashion is ineffective and not worthy of an elected position." Jan 20, 10 9:23 AM

Southampton councilwoman accuses supervisor of trying to 'control' her

... the need to "be in charge" is the problem here. Forget all this party contol/ rule crap and attack the issues. At this level it stymies creative problem solving and allows candidates/officials to hide behind party "platforms" and not get anything constructive done. At the end of the day the election goes to the most popular candidate irrespective of party.

For me , the last straw will be if this guy gets bounced out of the restaurant at the golf course he has successfully run for twenty plus years" Jan 26, 10 9:34 AM

Questions are raised over Town Board candidate's fund-raising restrictions

Are these guys that strong-arm you for the P.A.L donations in person and via telephone breaking any laws? They put the squeeze on pretty hard.

Let's get the candidates on the tube. Broadcast debates on channel 22 for the next couple of weeks. Three or four debates throughout the town broadcast the next night (not two weeks later) should suffice. Times-a wastin. Let's hear their take on the issues. Best way to tell who the best candidate is - that's how Malone got elected. This is an important election." Feb 4, 10 7:46 AM

I guess you are right. Why would I expect the local cable network to broadcast debates to 50,000 + residents of the town? It would make more sense for a couple of hundred residents to shoehorn themselves into a debate and spread the word via telephone or blog." Feb 4, 10 9:08 AM

Remsenburg-Speonk school officials are unfazed by Riverhead bond defeat

Weird spin - what does one have to do with the other? No story here - lame reporting. Is the Press trying to demonize all school construction? Sounds like it" Feb 18, 10 1:34 PM

Board silences Westhampton Beach Village attorney

... they have no idea what they are doing. No concept of Open Meetings law, no concept of executive session and how to use it to their advantage, do not understand what they read in public, and , above all , are exposing themselves and the village to litigation.

Makes for riveting "TV" watching - can't decide whether it is comedy or tragedy." Mar 11, 10 4:23 PM

East Hampton bows out of tuition meeting with other districts

It is time to send the Seneca Falls formula back to Seneca Falls. It is woefully outdated, favors the receiving district and has been successfully challenged by both feeder district and tuition receiving district. Time to revamp how tuition is paid by feeder districts. For better or worse we are no longer the sleepy rural/agricultural community that Seneca Falls was meant to serve. A good place to start." Southampton Town planner defends Tuckahoe planned development district

PDD's are nothing more than a way to bypass existing zoning laws. The "public benefit component" has become watered down and secondary. If it does not already, It should read "significant public benefit". A few apartments above a liquor store do not offer a public benefit.

This is not unlike attempts to wrangle money from the Community Preservation Fund for projects that do not align with the fund's intended use.

Both abuses are significant - stick to the intended applications of these programs." Jul 8, 10 10:02 AM

Shinnecocks want three casinos on Long Island

... seems the more the Shinnecocks try the further they get from any real progress. Put something real on the table, this latest proposal calling for three casinos is a joke. Do these "Gaming Authority" members have any expertise? Who says Long Island is the "greatest gaming market in the world"? I can't believe 200 Nassau real estate agents would meet with this group. Actually, I take that back. This story is getting real old." Sep 30, 10 1:35 PM
