Driver Faces Multiple Charges After Ramming Police Car In Eastport

The wonderful advantage of the internet is that stories may develop quickly and be updated numerous times as new information is discovered. The 'nothing, actually,' I would respectfully argue, was, in fact, something. It was news, the beginning kernel of a story that was then developed into something a little more substantial. We reported what we knew at the time because we felt there was some urgency in doing so, given the nature of the story, and felt our readers would want to know right away. " Sep 30, 11 1:47 PM

Ambulances Dispatched To Multi-Car Crash In Hampton Bays

I understand the frustration some of you are feeling that there were unanswered questions with this story. Absolutely, there were. We originally posted the story because we had heard through police broadcasts that the accident was a "five-car pileup." It was the middle of rush hour and we were concerned that it might be a) a serious accident with injuries and b) an impediment to commuter traffic.
As it turned out, the accident was minor, there didn't appear to be any injuries and it was cleaned up fairly quickly. We left it posted on our home page for several hours and then decided to remove it, due to it not being a serious accident. When we do that, however, the story remains posted on the site, just not on the main page.
While we heard informally from police that the accident was relatively minor, there was no official statement or comment, so the story was not updated. The comments posted on this story, however, prompted a discussion amongst the paper's editors, and we will in the future try to formulate a way to note that a breaking story did not develop into anything serious, as we feel an obligation to let you, the readers, know that.
We're not going to change our practice of posting breaking stories as soon as we have enough information to do so, as we felt we did in this case, because we also feel an obligation to inform our readers of any developing stories as soon as possible. That's the business we're in, that's what our competition does, and, frankly, that's the nature of the internet." Feb 8, 12 8:49 AM
