GOP passes over Kabot; nominates Conservative Party chair

The Republicans and Mr. Stinchi are wise in looking elsewhere. Linda is good at never taking responsibility ... she's always blaming someone else. Whatever happened to the "buck stops here?"

As a Councilwoman and now Supervisor a little "rolling up of the sleeves" when the multimillion dollar fiscal mess was uncovered would have shown leadership on her part. Instead she spends all her time blaming Skip Heaney and the last administration. Way to go, Linda ... you really think the beleaguerd Southampton town voters can stomach another two years of laizze faire management from you?

(BTW, "CommonSense" should get his facts right. Mr. Malone is one of the hardest, most diligent people working over there in the County Center. Empty-headed rhetoric by a masked writer adds nothing to honest discourse.)

The Republicans can restore fiscal sanity to Town Hall and Linda needs to give it up and step aside. " May 20, 09 5:40 PM

Kabot says town in the process of correcting fiscal crisis

It is really time -- no kidding -- that elected leadership of this town is held accountable. In the REAL (private sector) world such incompetence by management would result in a FIRING of that individual. Not just the one whose shoddy work led to a $ 10-plus million "error" but the boss whose failure at oversight allowed this to go on for a number of years!

Kabot and any other town official WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN must be asked to step down. NOW.

Elected officials -- incomptent elected town officials -- are putting the TAXPAYERS is a terrible position and our town taxpayers will suffer increased property taxes at a time of economic distress and reduced home values.

But for Linda Kabot it is all about blaming someone else." May 21, 09 4:06 PM

GOP passes over Kabot; nominates Conservative Party chair

The Republicans are not "getting revenge" by going for Malone over Kabot. They are being very practical, beliving Malone will restore fiscal conservative principles to town management where Supervisor Kabot (most Republicans hold a disdain for Heaney, Kabot and an incompetent previous Board's failure to protect taxpayer dollars) has little knowledge of finances and no particular training in budgets. The GOP wants to fix the mess of town finances made by the past Town Boards -- including the current regime and their failure to use state auditing guidelines.

We, taxpayers, are being punished with higher taxes because of their bad performance. " May 21, 09 4:25 PM

South Shore Press runs doctored photo of press conference

Sadly there is a history. Mr Towle and Mr Romaine are ethically challenged. No cut and pasting to misrepresent an original photograph is ever done -- except, apparently, by the South Shore Press" Jul 22, 09 11:10 PM

Supervisor Kabot will fight DWI charge, stay in race

Who among us has not made mistakes? Yes, she may be an elected official but surprise, surprise ... she is still human. Maybe she will use the embarrassment to change her behavior?

Linda is hardly my favorite person. Let's hope whatever happens with this unfortunate misjudgment, that from it Linda learns something: softens her heart, learns some humility, and is less prideful. And if she expresses remorse and asks for forgiveness ... well, isn't that what anyone of us would want? " Sep 11, 09 2:08 PM

You folks need to back off on criticizing the newspaper policy or the editor. They do a good job in a tough, unforgiving environment (no I am NOT a Press employee or relative :-)

BTW, allowing these comments and providing a forum is a COURTESY. It is a private business and subject to all kinds of liability ... so cut 'em a break and be happy you have a place to spout off (hopefully, with respect)." Sep 11, 09 2:16 PM

Westhampton Beach trustee, blogger spar over residency issues

What are you folks afraid of?

Conspiracy? Speir is attempting to get the village government to deal with an issue that keeps coming up over the years -- people with two homes who vote in two places (purposely or not). They mistakenly (being kind here) think paying property taxes here and for a home elsewhere entitles them to vote in two places! Nope. Well established State law restricts voting to one person, one vote.

Inquiring of the Conference of Mayor and the State Board of Elections is correct. Other villages may have handled a similar problem. What is their local law and how do they enforce it? The State BOE may have regulations specifically geared to procedure that WHB may need to know.

Speir is trying to get WHB to devise and invoke policy on fraudulent voter registrations and enforcement.

No need for criticism. If you have a legal right to vote in WHB elections, fine. If not, then make the changes necessary or be subject to challenge. Anyone threatened by that has other issues." Sep 20, 09 7:55 AM

Linda Kabot's DWI case expected to be moved to Riverhead Town Court

Linda needs to resign. Why? Because as an elected official she IS held to a higher standard.

She must not be allowed -- as her defense -- to destroy the good name of local police officers who were doing their job. It is not appropriate to turn her bad conduct into an indictment of the police officers involved nor be allowed in the public arena to refuse to take the breathalizer test. Yes, it may be her "right" but who amongst us doesn't think if she had taken the breathealizer test ... it would have convicted her of drunk driving right then and there.

No, Linda, think of all those families who lost a love one to drunk drivers. Even if you didn't "have that much" to drink, you owe it to those families to remove yourself from public office as your tactics during and since your DWI arrest are hardly an example of how to one should conduct themselves

Yes, as a public official you are held to that "higher standard".

Town housing officials walk out of civics meeting in East Quogue

This is nonsense -- of course the cost of housing is prohibitively high and many hard-working, two and three job families still can't save enough money nor afford the cost of mortgages needed to buy these Hampton homes -- so it ain't all about 'pulling yourself up' by the bootstraps, friend.

Affordable housing is needed for volunteer firefighters, our public safety workers and most of the folks who are taking care of your yard, shoveling your snow, cleaning your streets. It's time we understood that ... " Oct 1, 09 2:36 PM

Screaming and shouting down Town officials who are trying to actually solve a problem ain't the way to go ... hopefully, the housing officials will hold firm and have the courage to go forward and not be bullied by these prejudice, bigoted loud-mouths who opposed anything and everything .... leave the electeds out of this or they will put tail between legs and run .... " Oct 1, 09 2:40 PM

Southampton Town department heads try to dodge layoffs

Boy, that comment is an "out of body" surreal experience ... a budget so corrupted and mismanaged that they want to put the fox back in the hen house? It is political folly, my friend, to re-elect the very person responsible for the worst fiscal mess in Southampton Town history. Linda Kabot can not run from that and even as this problem started under the old regime, Kabot has been Supervisor for two full years and her $ 10 million shortfall has resulted in a people faced with the dismantling of their town government, threatened loss of essential services and more chaos in town hall.

No thank you! Putting the culprit --Linda Kabot and Company -- back in charge of the Town for another two years? That's as reasonable as thinking the taxpayers will send her flowers for the whopping increase in Kabot taxes they will be getting ... " Oct 1, 09 2:53 PM

Because as the public is learning, Linda Kabot takes responsibility for ... NOTHING!" Oct 1, 09 2:57 PM

Sure, go after the rank and file employee in town hall and of course, ignore the highly paid political appointments ... do you see what is wrong with this picture in a Kabot administration.

Linda, the buck stops ...where?" Oct 1, 09 3:00 PM

Linda Kabot's DWI case expected to be moved to Riverhead Town Court

well, well .... looks like a GOP operative trying to shift the irresponsible behavior of their standard bearer -- Linda Kabot -- to some made up, ridiculous claim of "election fraud" by a Democrat ????? -- yeah, tell the mother and father of a child killed by a drunk driver that election fraud is a crime similar to driving under the influence ... that doggie ain't gonna hunt" Oct 1, 09 3:08 PM

oh but remember Linda's campaign ad last week with all those supposed dozens of people -- even though not one person actually was named just "initials" used --- the Kabot campaign claims instantly wrote her in support despite her being arrested? Wonder if they are willing to let an independent third party validate those comments ... actually judge those names to be valid people who wrote in ... or are they "made up" comments in her advertisement? " Oct 1, 09 3:14 PM

treewoman ... your last name isn't Kabot is it?" Oct 1, 09 3:18 PM

Thiele leaves Republicans, joins Independence Party

Look there is one absolute when it comes to Thiele -- Thiele is Always for Thiele, plain and simple. This nonsense he has perpetrated for all his political life that he is "independent" is cow dung. There is nothing magical or special about this guy. He is an insecure, judgmental and antagonistic person. Ask those who dare to question his votes (like the one undermining the sanctity of marriage), his actions (bad-mouthing Behan), his public stances and they will tell you of letters and phone calls (many letters printed in this newspaper alone) chastising anyone who dare question this elected official's motives or actions.

Fred is an angry, frustrated person and one has to have sympathy for other electeds (especially Senator Lavalle, a real stand up guy) who are forced by circumstances to work with this guy. Try and think of one piece of legislation Fred passed that has helped average people. There 'ain't' any .... don't mention the preservation fund that pushed the cost of local housing out of the reach of average folks and became a "slush fund" for local government (like Quogue using the funds to buy up land on Dune Road !!! )

The GOP is the better for Thiele having gone to the Independence Party ... now Fred can join McKay in extorting privileges from the major parties as the price of an endorsement. Independent? Not hardly. " Oct 2, 09 4:12 PM

Linda Kabot's DWI case expected to be moved to Riverhead Town Court

You are correct Noah Way and that is the rub with Kabot. She fails to take any responsibility for anything --- not her conduct, not her management of Town Hall and the missing millions, not anything. I agree with you (and thanks for bringing some clarity to this)." Oct 2, 09 4:19 PM

Watch for the high priced lawyers to try and destroy the reputation and training of the local police officers in order to salvage Linda Kabot's political career ... it happens in court every time the facts seem irrefutable: the defense begins to tear down the process, the police, etc etc

I hope Linda has enough honesty and truthfulness not to let that happen. It would be a travesty. " Oct 2, 09 4:27 PM

isn't it curious that very soon after Kabot's arrest an anonymous letter accusing the police / ATH to be in a conspiracy surfaces? This is commencement of the riping apart of the local police as a defense strategy ... doesn't anybody see that ...." Oct 2, 09 4:34 PM

Why is it to save ones political crony, the conduct of the police is thought to be suspect? It is time some folks here focused on the real issue: the arrest of a public official entitled to her "day in court" (the legal side) whose public conduct is rightly in question (the political side) " Oct 2, 09 4:41 PM

Southampton Town deputy supervisor confronts, shoves PBA president over comments about budget

This is just part of the ongoing melt down of Team Kabot. Bill Jones needs to calm down. It is no way for a senior town official to conduct himself and an embarrassment to the Kabot administration. As a former elected official, Jones should know better. " Oct 3, 09 5:15 PM

Plain and simple -- Kabot goes down, Jones again loses another job. No too complicated, friends. Hence, his rash reaction ..." Oct 3, 09 5:20 PM

Thiele leaves Republicans, joins Independence Party

Without Brookhaven, Thiele is toast in any future run for Congress. Bishop is a lock for as long as he remains in office. Freddy, ironically, by switching parties ensured he will never succeed Lavalle in the Senate." Oct 3, 09 5:32 PM

Westhampton Beach Police remain mum on ongoing internal investigation of incident

Are you someone who bashes the police all the time until you need one? In so many of your posts, highhatsize, you routinely disparage the police officer in this town. I think it quite unfounded and in fact, insulting to the many officers and departments who go above and beyond in ably serving the public. You must have some real unresolved issues with the police, huh?" Oct 3, 09 5:41 PM

Ain't this the truth. Her high priced attorneys will rip to shreds the WHB police ... hold on, itc coming ...... UGH!" Oct 3, 09 5:43 PM

Southampton Town deputy supervisor confronts, shoves PBA president over comments about budget

oh yea ... you're making sense ... stop pulling over drivers who got behind the wheel or are thought to have gotten behind the wheel after drinking ... who could be against pulling over someone suspected of DUI ? Only someone who was caught driving while drunk." Oct 3, 09 5:47 PM

eliminate the high cost office of "deputy supervisor" and like the good old days, have the elected CEO of the town -- the Supervisor -- take back those administrative duties." Oct 3, 09 5:50 PM

Thiele leaves Republicans, joins Independence Party

Frankie -- where are you getting this stuff? Guldi is a private citizen and no elected Democrat at the time of his alleged malfeasance; Gregor -- aside from unsubstantiated "blogger" dillusions, the same and the EH Democrats -- why not throw in the kitchen sink in your crazy, illogical indictment of Democrats (writing as you are as a partisan Republican).

Next you'll say the likes of US Senator John Ensign (R-NV), Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC), ex-Rep Mark Foley (R-FL) are stellar examples of a noteworthy Republican Party and definitely presidential material. " Oct 5, 09 1:57 PM

Kabot's proposed $78 million budget will eliminate 48 town jobs next year

As someone who has little regard for Ms Kabot on several professional levels, she deserves thanks from every Southampton taxpayers for showing guts and a strength of character by tackling a thankless situation. Bravo, Ms. Kabot for once you've stepped up to the plate and handled the problem in the only manner available.

It is disappointing that several years of mismanagement by past and present Town officials (including Ms Kabot) means a loss of employment for 48 families. It did not have to be but now that Ms Kabot has decided to accept responsibility and fix the $ 10 million deficit, she deserves credit from even her harshest critics (of which I have been one).

I ask those who may not like her decision -- and what would you do to close a $ 10 million mismanagement problem and how would you fix the unprecenednted shortfall?

" Oct 8, 09 3:25 PM

another senseless comment from someone who so dislikes law enforcement and has so little comprehension of the Town budget ... sad, very sad" Oct 8, 09 3:28 PM

No one is "quick" to see a family lose their job ... nor the accompanying discomfort that comes with a loss of income. However look across America in every small town and village --- millions have lost their jobs in a horrible economy (thanks to the legacy of G W Bush)!

Only on Long Island is it expected that the government (taxpayers) gives the population more jobs than the private sector here -- it's true government (taxpayers) at all levels on Long Island is the source of more jobs than all the private employers combined!

So when times are tough, the biggest source of savings is the highest expense -- personnel. When was the last time the Town had any large scale non-political lay off? NEVER !!! " Oct 8, 09 3:34 PM

this is a political pro-Kabot campaign comment and has no basis in fact. Kabot has been part of the leadership of this town for many many years and yes, she was in a position to vote on, and approve, past budgets. Simple as that, she is responsible for the financial chaos and $10 million screw up as are the rest of the members of the past and present administrations (dept heads included)." Oct 8, 09 3:38 PM

With friends like this guy, Linda Kabot needs no enemies" Oct 11, 09 3:32 PM

So highat when was it, exactly, that your hope to be one of the Southampton Town Police went up in flames? Your anger over these (mostly) dedicated, selfless men and women of law enforcement is really off-putting, even as you have adefinite right to air your beefs with the cops. " Oct 11, 09 3:36 PM

Nurse, don't get a headache trying to sift through the incompetence so obvious in both Southampton and East Hampton. It is mind boggling isn't it?

TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE: Let us all hope the voters in November, for once, see through the campaign manipulation and advertising sleaze sure to cover up the horrible mismanagement and ego-driven tenure of Linda Kabot. Try finding a more inept past administration at Town Hall -- Democratic or Republican -- and there is none so poorly handled nor comparable to the secrecy and failure of the Kabot Team. There is no past mismanagement that even comes close to Linda's many bad acts.

Most decidedly, she is a "blamer" never accepts responsibility for her actions and has misappropriated the TRUST placed in her by the taxpayers. No it ain't about Democrats or Republicans -- it is about someone in the Town's highest office who lacks the skills and the talent to lead an annual enterprise of $ 80 million. " Oct 11, 09 3:54 PM

Even Sam, a Kabot intimate, admits she must go ... and Nuzzi would be a fine difference once he's got a few more years of experience and seasoning. He is just too "green" to be handling or managing a "business" the size of Southampton Town." Oct 11, 09 3:57 PM

Thiele leaves Republicans, joins Independence Party

Frankie -- you don't really want to go down that road now do you? No party has a lock on ethics ... we could play political ping pong all day long on the many "bad apples" on both sides who brought shame to themselves and the party who backed them for office ... Look how many people elected Linda Kabot for example ..." Oct 11, 09 4:03 PM

Westhampton Beach Police remain mum on ongoing internal investigation of incident

There are proper avenues of redress and legal steps one must take to safeguard ones rights leading up to arbitrating a grievance -- anyone aware of municipal governing knows that fact. So let's get past this nitpicking, ad nauseum, diatribe that has gone on here, please.

Isn't it time we stuck up for the police and let any individual grievances be handled by village management? Trying in this forum your own "beefs" with the police only serves to demoralize a whole cadre of talented, selfless hardworking men and women.

I'm more concerned with unfair attempts by some to tear apart and legally smear our local village police to save the skin of an errant town supervisor who (she will say) had the misfortune of getting arrested. " Oct 11, 09 4:20 PM
