Southampton Post Office's "Green" Landscaping Draws Complaints

I'm fine with it. I hope the post office doesn't relent. Sure, toss in a few wildflowers. What's horrible are those fake-looking lawns on Meadow Lane, chock-full of pesticides and watered almost all day long. " Jun 14, 11 3:25 PM

Summertime Traditions: Outdoor Movies

Relax, people. It's only a movie series. I'm sure the promoters got the rights to broadcast. These aren't exactly new films, though good choices. You have to realize, people are entitled to a vacation -- even if it is in your relative backyard. I recently left the Twin Forks, as a year-rounder, and regret a bit that I missed a lot of these summer events because they were perceived to be for "summer people." I now live in another resort area and plan to make it a point to go to such events in my new area. It's spiritually freeing having a tourist's mentality. " Jun 23, 11 4:43 PM

Doctor's Widow Recalls Family's Struggles

Great story and well written. The thing to learn from this and the Berkowski story also on your site right now is that primary bread-earners need to plan, plan, plan, just in case. " Jul 6, 11 4:30 PM

University Signs Settlement, Ending Stony Brook Southampton Lawsuit

Now that this is over, the campus can move on. The early leadership of the SBS campus put all its eggs in the basket of being a sustainability program. Sustainability is important, and that was not a bad start as it's a relatively cheap major to pull off and definitely garnered media attention. But the campus needed more diversity in curriculum. Frankly, if Stony Brook Southampton merely kept all the traditional majors Southampton College of LIU had, at SUNY tuition rates, the campus would have exploded in growth.

The other aspect is leadership. The college needs to have a leader who not only understands SUNY politics but also East End politics. Every campus leader since Tim Bishop only rented a modest apartment on the East End or lived in the dorms; they mostly weekended elsewhere. None of them were truly serious about the position. The MFA program is its own entity, and has its own pluses and minuses. I don't really get the husband-wife teams from Sag Harbor they seem to hire to put on middle school plays -- not sure what this has to do with a graduate MFA program where the typical student seems to be 57 years old -- but the Summer Writers Event is a great show. The other 11 months of the year, meh. But they do know how to politic, that's for sure, and, unlike most MFA programs, many of the graduates do get book deals. Did they sell out the undergrad program, I doubt it. Just they turn a profit and money talks. The undergraduate program just didn't know how to politic. Each leader on that campus found him/herself quickly shut out of the President's cabinet at the main campus. They also didn't do a good job of winning friends on the East End, axing the radio station, for example. Perhaps they should have followed the MFA program's lead. " Aug 14, 11 4:47 PM

Reeves Shares New Vision For Stony Brook Southampton

The campus has had a stunning lack of leadership since Tim Bishop left to run for congress, succeeded by people from outside the area with no clue of local politics and little clue about University politics and the relationship between a parent University and satellite campus. Each one of these leaders had blinders on and made decisions without seeing the big picture. They also quickly found themselves shut out of serious conversations at the "main" campus, whether it was Stony Brook or LIU. Each one alienated staff and the East End locals. The last campus leader seemed to make every mistake imaginable, while raking in a quarter mil a year, booting well-connected Sea TV and WLIU 88.3 FM, while devoting wasted time to fund-raising efforts in New York City, and giving no clear direction to staff in Southampton while having no serious presence at Stony Brook's main campus. She simply didn't put the work in.

Reeves has been around through all of this and definitely won't make any of the above mistakes. This will be good for the East End and those who want a vibrant local college.

Stony Brook Southampton Lawsuit Settlement Paves Way For Possible Talks On Hospital Move

Pie in the sky.

The hospital would not be a good addition to the college campus. Hospitals attract a lot of traffic. Huge parking lots. Sirens. Emergency vehicles. A lot a patients from all walks of life. That campus isn't that large. It would be turned pretty urban by adding a hospital.

Besides, there are no college students there now, so ... what college are we talking about? First get a few thousand students, and THEN talk about a med campus.

Put it at the Elks Lodge and stop using the college as a pawn in these negotiations. " Sep 2, 11 11:03 PM

A Well Decorated Guest Room Should Be Like A Fine Hotel

I actually believe the opposite. A guest room should have the basics. It's the "roughing it" experience that many seem to enjoy. That's why people like camping, too. Plus there's nothing sadder than a pretty room that's seldomly slept in. Spend the money on rooms that are actually lived in. Besides, you don't want your cousin visiting from Cleveland to feel TOO welcomed!" Oct 4, 11 12:34 PM

Husband Of North Haven Mayor Dies After Fall

I think The Press accurately portrayed the newsworthiness of this event. They have 10,000 readers. 9,900 do not know the deceased, but they may have heard of the mayor or at least have an interest in anything even remotely political. I understand the family's grief, and I'm sure that Mr. Nolan has a special place in Heaven, but it would show a serious lack of integrity if the paper did not report this story or kowtowed to a backroom phone call from someone politically connected. The other 99% of us want the paper to tell us what they know, regardless of repercussions. " Oct 13, 11 9:16 AM

Sag Harbor, Greenport Ferry Idea Inches Along

I used to live in Greenport and commute to Sag Harbor. This would have helped me a ton back in the day. Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Usher In "New Era Of Regional Health Care"

This is horrible news for college students and residents of Shinnecock Hills. So students going to classes are going to be in the same parking lot as gunshot victims, people with whooping cough and busy medical professionals commuting in? Ambulances will come screeching in at 2 a.m. Helicopters?! That campus is not large. Surely the hospital will dominate it. What a mess, and what a disappointment. " Oct 4, 12 1:45 PM
