Southampton Town comes up $1.4 million short in tax revenue

Obbservant is correct! The first thing that Throne Holst did was put the town employees who were to lose their jobs back in the budget. She then gave her appointees large raises. She is the cause of this budget gap! Southampton Town i sno better than NY State at budgeting. It is time to cut expenditures. Why are so many millions still being budgetd for preserving land. I'm sorry, but if it comes between people starving and greenspace, people come before tree huggers!" Jul 2, 10 8:42 PM

Connecticut casino employees file 11th-hour challenge to Shinnecock recognition

Why does everyone assume that a casino is a done deal. Federal Recognition does not give them the right to have a casino. That spect must be wroked out with the state. If they plan on Nassau County, the state will not give it's approval because of their own facility at Aqueduct. The Southampton College campus would be an ideal location. The land belongs to the Shinnecocks anyway. Good access between either Montauk highway or County Rd. 39. There is even a LIRR trainstop. All those who oppose it because of the traffic, it won't cause any ore traffic problems than curently exists. All those weekenders cause the traffic. The mercahnst aren't complainingg about them, that how they make their living. The Shinnecocks should be afforded the same rights to a living, and close to their ancestral lands so tribal members can actually work there if they are so inclined." Jul 16, 10 2:38 PM

I live 1 mile west of the college off of Montauk Highway. Have lived her for 50 years and see no problem with traffic on Montauk highwy. Sunrise Highway is another issue. The problem is over the past 30 years, trhe wealthy have come here and taken over our town. Now thay have the "Not In My Backyard" mentality! The Shinnecocks ought to be given the Southampton College campus if they will give up their rights to all the other ancestral lands they calim are theirs. Then they can have a college and casino. Guess you will just have to leave for work a little earlier. I think everyone is assuming the same number of patrons that Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun used to have. It won't even be close! Those locations are easily accessible from all New England states. Southampton is mainly accessible only from driving one one or teo highways. With the bottlenecks that currently exist, the patronage figutes will be lucky to be 50% of those people are assuming, especially once the novelty wears off." Jul 18, 10 12:59 PM

They could always buid the casino on the existing reservation or in their land in Hampton Bays. No one could stop them since there are reservation lands. The State can only stop them if they want to build on non-reservation lands. " Jul 18, 10 1:12 PM

The nature of the business is for a casino conglomerate to come along and offer to manage the casino. There is mega bucks for them to do so. The Shinnecoks would never be able to finance the buidling of a casino, nor finance all the legal costs that are involved in their fight for federal recognition and any negotiations woth state and local governments. The Shinnecocks will benefit from the casino, just not as much as the company that backs them. That is the nature of the beast as this company has taken a huge risks in backing them with the risk that it would pay off down the road. It would be better for the Shinnecocks to have the casino as close to reservation lands as possible so the tribal members would be close enough to be gainfully employed if they so choose."
