Southampton Village sets date for vote on new firehouse

I propose that anyone who actually has the right to vote on this issue (Southampton Village residents) do some research into what federal and state regulations are still unmet at the current fire house. You will find that the current firehouses do not meet these requirements. Then do some research on what it will take to make the firehouse compliant...and you will find that it involves building a new structure since these requirements were not in place or as stringent in 1959 when the current structure was built. It sounds as if the village board has done their due diligance in making sure that the fire department gets what it needs in the most cost-effective manner...they have already knocked off almost $4 million off the original plan. If those of you who actually do the research are able to find a better solution, exercise your rights on voting day. C Law and pmofo, you can be critical of this plan all you want in this forum, but seeing as how you do not reside in SH Village, it is really not an issue for you at all...your tax dollars will not be going to this new firehouse and you really don't get a say afterall...move into the village and then I might be more willing to listen to your commentary." Tuckahoe And Southampton School Boards Hire Firm For Merger Study, Agree On Exclusivity Deal

I beg to differ. The Southampton School system has produced small business owners, volunteer ambulance and fire department crew members, valued employees, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc., etc., etc. who all make up the fabric of this town. I would argue that while not all of them might make national news, they are all note-worthy and this town wouldn't be what it is today without them. There is always room for improvement no matter what profession you are in, but I would rather have a village and town of involved citizens graduate from our schools than 100 Congressmen, celebrities, professional athletes, or whatever else you deem "note-worthy"." Southampton Expresses Doubt Over Merger With Tuckahoe

mychildmatters, I for one am glad the board is being open and honest. They were elected to represent those who elected them and it would be an absolute shame if they did not live up to that responsibility. I, personally, am in favor of the merger as a Southampton School District resident. I do not believe I am alone in that. However, the voices of those of us in favor need to be just as loud, and louder, in fact, if there is any hope of overcoming the extremely loud voices of those who oppose the merger. Many of those voices are people who are not even registered to vote in our district, yet they own multi-million dollar homes here. They do not have a stake in our children's education. They will not care about the negative consequences. We need to rally together with those of us who do care, immensely, about the Tuckahoe students' and our own students' best interests. My best advice to the Tuckahoe families is this: please let the Southampton School District community work this through without your attempting to shame anyone into it or your anger. You are actually hurting your cause and playing right into the hands of those who believe you are looking for a "bailout" or trying to get your taxes lowered by using your children as pawns. Please know this is not my opinion, but when you repeatedly lash out in anger, you are not winning over any of those who are ambivalent, not sure, not informed. You really can't say how you would feel if the shoe were on the other foot, because it's not. You have to give people time to get educated and make the best decisions they can. I promise you you will not win friends and influence people with negativity toward the very people who are trying to wrap their heads around this issue." Sep 3, 14 1:34 PM

The BOE members actually said during their comments that they support the merger, but that given what they are hearing from the community, they need to hear from Southampton District residents who support the merger. They are only hearing from the residents who do not. The article is a bit misleading...the reporter can not write everything the BOE members said and chose to only write the portion of their statements that were negative toward the merger. Each of the members said that they want the merger, feel it is right...but they have to also listen to the community. If there are people in the community who support the merger, they really need to begin to speak up and speak out and quickly." Sep 5, 14 1:41 PM

Southampton School Board Decides To Bring Tuckahoe Merger To A Straw Vote Again

If you vote "no" on the merger and do so because of $330 per $1 million assessed value on your home, then I would find it hard to believe that you are doing so because of the money. $330 does not warrant changing the fabric of our community. If the students who currently live in the Tuckahoe district are no longer a part of the high school because of your "no" vote, then I will know it is because you absolutely don't want "them" there. You have as much as said so with your disparaging comments about the Tuckahoe school and students at public meetings. Perhaps you agree with Georgette who publicly stated that Tuckahoe is a "cesspools." Just be honest and say you are voting "no" because you are xenophobic. " Sep 12, 14 4:47 AM

The facts are there if you choose not to ignore them. Don't worry. We, the awakened community members who now know that we will have to do a better job of helping the district get the facts out to counter the fear-mongering, will do just that. The superintendent mentioned the presentation he made last night is on the district website in the meantime. " Sep 12, 14 4:51 AM

Local citizen, we're you even at the meeting on Thursday?? First of all, the majority of people in the room were Southampton School District residents. Secondly, not a single Tuckahoe parent spoke at the meeting. How can you say "at the meeting it was clear that the only people trying to separate from Southampton were the Tuckahoe residents" when absolutely nothing was said of the sort. " Sep 12, 14 9:55 PM

Preliminary Tuckahoe, Southampton School Merger Vote To Take Place Tuesday

Why would you give one wit what we do in Southampton if you live in Amityville?? Guess what? Southampton and Tuckahoe voters will decide this issue without your help. I believe most of us will come out and decide this issue not based on a $330 per $1 million raise in taxes...we will vote YES based on what is best for OUR community. I would never insert myself into your community's issues and would appreciate you staying out of ours." Nov 15, 14 9:32 AM

Do you honestly think that Southampton students don't currently ride buses on County Road 39? You are indeed trying to play on people's fears...but this one is truly comical. Southampton students already traverse to and from school on that road. This issue has nothing to do with the tragic death that occurred and you know it. If anything your ridiculous comment brings to light how Tuckahoe and Southampton students travel to school on many of the same roads now...and why we are indeed, one community despite having two different school districts. Time for that to change. One community. One school district. " Nov 15, 14 9:38 AM

A LOT MORE DOLLARS?? How about let's get to the facts and not use vague terms. $330 per $1 million assessment value is what you are calling A LOT MORE DOLLARS. Never mind the fact that this will be phased in over 10 years. Yep, that's right. Fact: for the next three years, Southampton taxpayers will be paying less, then the tax rate gradually raises to that $330 per $1 million assessment. " Nov 15, 14 9:41 AM

Southampton High School May Try Out Program To Allow Some Athletes To Skip Some Gym Classes

If the reason this policy is being considered is to offer "relief" to a student athlete's schedule because they have CHOSEN to take many APs and honors courses, then there is an alternative way to offer relief that will offer a fair and equitable relief to ALL students that will not, at the same time, denigrate the PE program and send the message that PE is not important. The PE class is one of the few classes where students are not segregated by ability and/or interest. While we look at teenagers in high school and may be tempted to think they have learned all they can about social interaction and teamwork, they are really, in the scheme of life, just beginning. PE isn't a waste of time. And to expect that our kids will get alll of the same interactions and lessons and experiences during a season of a single sport is hard for me, personally, to swallow" Jan 22, 15 10:31 AM

UPDATE: Farina Will Receive Nearly $300,000 After Resigning From Superintendent Position

Concerned Parent from Manorville: Your comment above shows how little you know about our district and our school board. Art and music are high priorities in our district and not once have they ever threatened to cut our students' art/music programming. Have you attended any of our district board meetings? Have you ever attended any of our arts festivals? Have you had the pleasure of seeing the artwork that comes out of our schools or hearing the talents of our musicians? Our district graduates students who go on to impressive art schools and conservatories of music. Perhaps you should continue to concentrate your concern in Manorville...where you live. Water Samples Taken From Southampton Schools In May Tested High For Lead

The fixtures were an outdoor spigot and a classroom sink, people....neither of which students drink from. Come on Southampton Press...stop with the misleading headline here. Our students aren't in danger of lead poisoning. The district was proactive...tested the school's months before NYS required schools to do so...and the fixtures are all changed and lead-free now. Way to, once again, show how you will take any chance to make it sound way worse than it actually is. " Sep 23, 16 5:39 AM
