Ballot Count Begins; Altschuler Travels To Washington

That's silly. They are mostly older ladies and gentlemen looking to earn a few extra dollars each election day. The ones at my polling location are decent local people who are definitely not in any union and not on any party's committee and would be amused or perhaps even flattered to be called thugs." Nov 9, 10 12:37 AM

I just got a another call asking for a family member who had voted by absentee ballot. This was the third such call. I told the guy the person wasn't home and asked him the reason for his call. He said he was working for CSI and doing a survey of voters. To my surprise, he wanted to know if I had voted, I said yes, then he asked who for. I declined to tell him and hung up. I should have asked which party had hired him. I'll try to do that in the future. I wonder if they will send someone to the door at some point? I'll bet that's next.

Southampton Town Department Heads Raise Issues With Preliminary 2011 Budget

Not all of those to be let go under Anna's budget freely wanted to "take advantage" of the state's early retirement incentive. Jump or get pushed was more like it. Worse, at least one person wasn't even on the state's list when told his job was ending. He wasn't eligible for the state retirement package, contrary to what has been said publicly, so couldn't take advantage of it. Disgraceful business." Nov 10, 10 11:13 PM

I am certain. I do claim the supervisor is being untruthful. She forced people to be laid off, and she knows it. So do a lot of other people. And, at least one person who's job the Supervisor ended was NOT originally on the NYS Retirement Incentive list. No one had bothered to check. It wasn't until a few good people went to bat for him that was he added to it. The truth, in this case, isn't pretty.

Southampton Village To Ask Stony Brook For Windmill Back

What a good idea, not that I can think of where it might go. But, I'd hate to see it go to developers. Rather, if the college does go permanently defunct, I'd like to see the property used for affordable housing available to local working families - NOT more McMansions. Since I believe public money bought the college's land, the public should get the benefit of it." Nov 20, 10 10:55 AM

Shinnecocks Will Have To Wait For Federal Aid

It's not that clear cut. They were not welcomed to assimilate until quite recently. Old barriers come down slowly. They were not given the same job opportunities or education and that has taken a terrible toll. Many college grads from the reservation had to go elsewhere to find employment because they could not get hired here. For example, it's only been in the last ten years or so that the local school system has hired qualified teachers from the reservation in any numbers. And, it's true, they can not get individual bank mortgages because their land is jointly held. Imagine trying to build a house without one - I can't. " Nov 20, 10 11:24 PM

Bishop Leads Altschuler After Absentee Ballots Counted

So, what's the count as of late this afternoon?" Nov 22, 10 3:41 PM

Why not? Many women get pregnant accidentally and do not want a baby at that point in their lives. Some get talked into going too far - you guys call it seduction, but it's the woman who bears the consequences, others get raped, or someone slips them something in their drink to incapacitate them - which happens more than you may think. I served on a grand jury about that issue. Should those women have to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term and go through the emotional wringer that carrying and then giving a newborn away must entail? Who is going to take in that child? Give it up for adoption? Who's to say the child get s a good home? I know adoptive parents who should never have been given a child. It's far better to terminate a pregnancy very early when it's just a blob than put a woman through the wringer just to make other people happy. I don't agree that a child is a child at conception. It's just an egg and a sperm that have gotten together and begun dividing. If you truly believe it is a child at that point, then there are untold thousands of children being keep frozen, many of which are thrown away after their parents have all the live kids they want, at in vitro clinics all over the world that need saving." West Hampton Dunes Village, Residents Challenge Authority Of Town Trustees

This is basically a land grab by WB. Underwater land belonging to the people of Southampton that suddenly had a lot of sand washed onto it so that it sticks up out of the bay now. Sand that just as suddenly could be washed away, but would which is worth millions if it were sold to build on. The story ought to be about who would benefit personally from the sale if the land became part of WB, because that is at the heart of the lawsuit$, and why Anna and the town board is sitting back." Tuckahoe Superintendent Would Rent District-Owned Home Following $95,000 Renovations

What are they proposing to do for $95,000? Kitchen, A/C, baths, structural work? Is the house sound? Aren't there other houses available for rent in the district? What have they been doing with it for the last year? Has it been empty, rented or used by the district in some way? There are more questions than information. It would be interesting to learn more." Graboski Defends Kratoville Appointment

Not a silly comment, if you knew what was really going on. The supervisor has been trying to consolidate a lot of things into her office, lessening the possibility of checks and balances. Too bad the Press hasn't caught on yet. " Dec 9, 10 11:48 AM

Two Charged In Water Mill Deer Poaching Incident

I'm glad they got these fools. Some jerks shot deer near me a few summers ago and missed killing cleanly. Two staggered onto the back of our property and died. We found their rotting carcasses when the stench became so great we had to close our windows. Yes, the herds need thinning, but not by beanbrains. " Dec 18, 10 2:14 PM

Hampton Designer Showhouse Gifts Southampton Hospital $140,000

Good for Mary Lynch! That's quite an accomplishment. Showhouses require an enormous amount of work, between locating a free house to use, signing top designers, finding sponsors and advertisers and getting an army of volunteers. She clearly has done an excellent job to have been able to clear that much money." Dec 18, 10 2:32 PM

Holidays Are Especially Difficult For Homeless

It's so nice the Press is headlining this problem. But, homeless Mom's shifting from house to house is nothing new. Over the past fifteen years I've even run into women who have lived in garages, on boats and in trailers, sometimes without running water, just to keep their kids in the same school district until their luck changed. Many didn't have money for a security down payment on a new rental, others had lost their homes when a landlord wouldn't renew and they couldn't find anything affordable. Section 8 had a two year waiting list, leaving them little recourse. Hope it's shorter now." Dec 24, 10 12:14 AM

Erosion, Not Snowfall, Is Blizzard's Main Impact In East Hampton

They should have had a house moving company pick it up and move it back last week and not have asked a contractor to make a heroic effort to shore it up. Can't win against Mother Nature. Blizzard Blankets East End; Dozens Are Still Without Power

Anyone else beside us see the spectacular turquoise light arcing up high up into the sky from south Bridgehampton last night about 5:30 ? The light's reflection off the snow flakes amplified it so that it filled almost the entire southern sky. Seemed to come from down by the beach. Guess some transformer blew big time. Landmark Southampton Village Beauty Salon Will Serve As Museum's Home

This is a charming story. The little building adds to the small, historic village ambiance of Southampton, helping to counterbalance the invasion of the generic McDonalds and 7/11 structures. I'm glad it's been designated a landmark, and glad it was purchased so that it won't be torn down and replaced by something dreadful." Dec 28, 10 10:27 AM

Southampton Town Nears Completion of County Road 39 Land Use Study

County Legislature Votes To Run Buses On Sundays

It's about time! I hope we will finally get Sunday bus service. I have been one of many who have gone before the Transportation Committee to ask for better bus service out here. The county simply doesn't want to spend the money on us because our smaller population might not make it financially profitable, yet we contribute an enormous amount to the county in taxes. If we had the service, people would certainly use it all year round, not just in the summer." Jan 6, 11 11:02 PM
