Southampton School Board suspends high school principal and assistant principal, who are then hired by East Hampton

Folks, please read the article a bit more carefully. There is a union involved: " ... and Mr. Fine said he learned afterward from his union representative, Tim Frazier, the Southampton Intermediate School principal, that the action was taken unanimously by the board."

And: "They each took a personal day last Thursday to attend the interview ..."

" May 21, 10 12:01 PM

Plus, "Mr. Fine maintained that both administrators had informed Dr. Boyes of their interest in the job opportunities at East Hampton in March." That gave Southampton plenty of time to negotiate with them, or start looking for new talent.

None of this makes the situation any better, the school is out of both a principal and an assistant principal. I hope Mr. Dyno can step in as Principal and the school can concentrate on finding a new assistant principal. I nominate Junie Wingfield." May 21, 10 12:07 PM

Westhampton Beach man receives GOP nod for assembly; Thiele gets Democratic endorsement

I'd be interested to know what the candidates might do to solve the illegal question - shipping millions back when many have kids who are American citizens is not practical. Too often candidates say "It's Washington's problem", when in fact it has become everyone's and we need to deal with it on many levels. Because so many people hire illegals that become it's clear we need a guest worker program. Done right, we will never again have to talk about creating another "amnesty" program. Note to Editor, it would be nice to be able to edit after posting so we could make corrections when we realize something needs changing, ie: spelling, grammar, a word in the wrong place or a clarification. Thanks" May 23, 10 4:07 PM

Bugge's petition ruled invalid in Westhampton Beach trustee race

Getting enough valid signatures on a petition is not easy. Each signature must be exactly as recorded at the board of elections. If a voter is registered as George M. Jones III, that has to be the exact signature on the petition. If the M or the III is left out, the signature can be challenged successfully. It may seem like nit picking, but it is done to verify that the person signing is indeed the correct George Jones, and not some other guy with a similar name. It's simple election mechanics and is done all the time all over the country. " May 25, 10 12:14 AM

Police investigate body found on beach in Amagansett

Probably it's the unfortunate kayaker who was out in the sound not long ago. They found his kayak, but not him. Poor man." May 25, 10 1:21 PM

Woman killed in motorcycle accident on Napeague stretch

She trusted a fool and died because of it, poor girl. I am sorry for her family. Very sad. Only 19." May 25, 10 1:29 PM

We all understand that he probably is going through hell now, and can empathize. But, the facts are that he shouldn't have been riding his motorcycle with a suspended license and he shouldn't have run from the police. Driving a car or riding a motorcycle is a privilege to be earned, not a legal right. Licenses of dangerous drivers get suspended to protect the general public. In this case, a young woman died as a consequence of a young man's rash decision. A true tragedy for both." May 25, 10 2:22 PM

Mattituck woman will receive six months for DWI fatality involving Hampton Bays teen

Disgusting. Those of us who disagree should each write a letter to the judge and copy it to the DA expressing what we think. Would the Press please print their names and addresses? Thanks. Just venting frustration here will do no good. Letters might get those involved in the decision to act differently in the future. We need to get drunks like this despicable woman off the road. The child she killed could have been any of ours - or theirs." Jun 9, 10 1:18 PM

DWI charge in Sagaponack accident

What a good idea!

Southampton Town code enforcement slaps landlord with 50 violations at six houses

Sounds like there was good cause: " ... renting without a permit, transient renting, and building without a permit. Some of his houses had swimming pools, hot tubs, and volleyball and basketball courts added without the required building permits. Other houses had been converted from single-family to multi-family homes or had apartments added above a garage illegally. There were also charges for having an excessive number of vehicles parked at a property—town code allows only four per house—and for overflowing Dumpsters."" Jun 9, 10 7:45 PM

Shinnecock Nation explores opening tribal college at Stony Brook Southampton site

A tribal college sounds like a good idea to me. I'm all in favor of it. It would be great for students from the reservation plus it would provide an opportunity for kids from western reservations to come east for an education. The poverty on some of those reservations is appalling to see, especially in more remote areas." Jun 24, 10 10:25 AM

Sag Harbor house busted for group rental second week in a row

Craigs list used to have lots of group rentals listed on it, complete with pictures and invitations to parties at bars in NYC to meet each other before buying in. In past years I passed them along to people high up at Town Hall to a chorus of yawns." Jul 6, 10 9:43 AM

The hospitable housewife: At Home with Countess LuAnn de Lesseps

Not jealous, just disdainful. There are many people out here with genuine titles, ones they were born with - not married, who would never act as she does. Some have very little money, but they have lovely manners. They would never flaunt their titles. " Jul 6, 10 1:25 PM

Schneiderman forgoes congressional run

Tim's a nice guy, but an ineffectual congressman. He and his staff get the boilerplate work done, but he doesn't step out of his comfort zone. Don't look to him to stand up to the opposition party in congress. Jay has deep seated principles and the backbone to defend them. I wish he had run." Jul 10, 10 11:33 AM

Kabot DWI hearing kicks off, will resume Tuesday

I think I remember a Viewpoint article in the Press about a year ago, written by a local attorney, who advised that anyone stopped for DWI should not take a breathalyzer test. He had a number of reasons why, which surprised me at the time. It would be interesting to go back and read it, in view of this case." Jul 10, 10 11:55 AM

Parrish Art Museum will break ground on new building next week

The Village of Southampton owns the building on Jobs Lane which the Parish rents for free now. Samuel Parish's original collection will remain in it - what's left of it, some's gone missing over the years its been in the village's care. The building would make a great arts and cinema center. Perhaps a community center as well. We need to start having discussions about its future use. " Jul 13, 10 10:31 AM

Wainscott community members see disconnect in developer's vision for Plitt Ford property

I'd love a Whole foods store or Wild By Nature, so would a lot of others. People from Amagansett travel to Hampton Bays to shop at the natural food store there, according to what its employees told me last year, spending up to $800 a pop. I'd shop there year round." Jul 18, 10 11:48 AM
