View The Kabot DWI Police Tape

1. should have pulled her over on sunset if that was such an egregious swerve
2. It would be nice to have the audio from the pursuit part, not just the stop" Feb 2, 11 1:03 PM

I would fail that test sober after about 10 minutes of going through those motions on heels.
PS not a Kabot fan" Feb 2, 11 1:12 PM

Again, the complete audio would be helpful, and they should have requested she sit in the car while they went back to theirs." Feb 2, 11 1:14 PM

Southampton Town Board To Consider Most Expensive CPF Purchase In History

Dam, I wanted to see more Michael Davis McMansions, fake ponds, and curvy street subdivisons. After all, "thats what the hamptons is all about" quoth Lizzie Grubman, Judy Guliani, Jodi De la Femina and all the other experts who just showed up in the last decade or so to school those of us who were born here." Seven School District Budgets Get Passing Grades In Western Southampton Town

Nitpicking details notwithstanding, public employees, teachers, cops, etc need to have compensation indexed to the private sector mean in the town. Of course you need to account for business owners who have non w-2 income and the cash economy many avail themselves of may be problematic.
Pensions/retirement - everyone should be responsible for their own. Providing for a few at at expense of the many who are funding their own is just fundamentally unfair. I recomend everyone read up on 'Superannuation", the successful system Australia has been using." May 23, 11 4:25 PM

BMW dealership an empty lot waiting for a buyer

Leased a BMW in 2007, Manhattan (Wall St branch) provided a better quote than Southampton. I gave SH a shot because its my hometown and employs childhood friends, but the cheesy up-island managers and sales people were a turn off. I guess they were spoiled by all the lay up business for decades from summer people who want Southampton around their license plate.
Lets face it, this was bad mgt all around, most of the cars are leased through BMW finance. Chase would finance a revolver for inventory if these guys were not bums and paid their taxes. With Mercedes (Where did the $8mill go?) moving to a better location, only a matter of time till BMW does the same under better mgt. and Sobel seeks permission to turn that corner in to a mini mall. Hopefully the town will take this opportunity to revamp the traffic intersection." Jun 28, 11 10:42 AM

East Hampton Town Natural Resources Director Larry Penny Suspended, Could Be Fired

So a bankrupt town is trimming the payroll and elimination pointless jobs held by strange individuals by the means available to them. Unfortunately he'll be getting paid for life regardless. Who was "Natural Resources Director" before him? Probably nobody for the previous 300+ years of the towns history.
Since the Feds wont do anything about illegal aliens, maybe the town should hire a few, "off the books" at sub-standard wages, and no benes or pension of course, since they cant be hired legally, to pick up dead animals and dispose of them properly.
Now that would be good (local anyway) good government" Dec 14, 11 9:09 PM

Discord Erupts Over Shinnecock Vote On Casino Partner's Future

The reservation has a high concentration of pathologys because they don't own private property but kid themselves in to thinking they are preserving their ancient culture by living on a collectively owned land, and accumulating wealth becomes impossible. Gambling will provide stipends and/or jobs to many, a few clever people, along with the outside investors, will really cash in big (fostering resentment) and the pathologys will continue. Read up on whats happened on the reservations in Ct, not to mention the impact on surrounding communities. Also read up on "tragedy of the commons", and dust off Orwell, ie "some pigs are more equal than others"
" Dec 14, 11 9:22 PM

Oh and wait till someone decides to start kicking people out of the tribe (and off the gravy train) for having less discernible Native American ancestry than others. This has happened extensively on reservations out west when gambling revenues start rolling in.

Please build a world class golf course on the land in Hampton Bays. Hire a good mgt company who will hire tribe members, (surely they have the skill sets), and provide health insurance and 401Ks. The neighbors will love it as their property values will go up, and people will come from miles around and pay hundreds of dollars to play a world class public golf course on Peconic Bay with the Shinnecock name on it. That other golf club surely wont begrudge the name.
Cheers" Dec 14, 11 9:32 PM

'Occupy' To March In Southampton Village On Sunday

Franklin Delano "Frank" Raines , Obama and Clinton crony with no experience as a finance executive, took $90M in compensation out of a FNMA as CEO while cooking the books the whole time. Hearings held, he skated naturally, now a bag man for Obama and probably lives in an inflated McMansion in the DC suburbs. Most people who work on "Wall Street" never see $90m except on a computer screen. I think the OWS people are looking in the wrong place.
Was there a failure to regulate reasonably and properly?, Yes! Madoff and now Corzine, clear cases of fraud that regulators missed completely, or were told to ignore because of political connections. Could derivatives be better managed or regulated? Yes. But first lets make sure the underlying collateral they are derivative of is not a mortgage from a guy who cant possibly service it. The latter is a product of decades of so called "progressive" public policy, really aimed at buying votes from the less fortunate, wherein government mortgage agencies, as well as private institutions that were forced to by the government, made mortgages to the aforementioned less fortunates (who took the money and ran). And sure, everyone in the chain piled on with a vengeance when they saw the volume of money flowing. Given that it was a product of government policy, they thought the government had their back and it would keep going indefinitely. Some got bailed out in the end, some didn't.
Interesting think about Greenspan, after feeding the beast with liquidity as Fed chair until the foreclosures started flowing in, he promptly left and took a consulting job with our own John Paulson. I have no problem with Paulson profiting while everyone else was still drinking the koolaid and I dont blame him for buying political cover when the witch hunts began, but I have a problem with Greenspan the public official jumping to the private sector and taking the other side of the trade of the mess he helped create. Ethics rules anyone?
OWS manifesto contains 2 things I agree with;
1. No bailing out of investment banks (good, but don't ask them to provide liquidity to government schemes to lend to people money they don't have the means to repay)
2. Restore elements of Glass-Steagal (Good, don't include depositor funds in leverage calculations and keep Corzine's hands off them too, ie enforce reasonable laws already on the books too)
Unfortunately most of the protesters couldn't articulate or understand these, but have embraced all the Marxist/pay my student loan non sense.

Some advice to OWS:
Blaming "Wall Street" is too easy, and most Wall Street guys are just hard working fools, not unlike many small businessmen, trying to make an above average income for their family, while enjoying zero job security and no tax payer funded pensions . Do some real homework OWS, it might lead you to different addresses. Of course that addresses might also be the homes your enablers and financial supporters, 1%ers all." Dec 16, 11 7:24 AM

Eastport South Manor Middle School Parents Are Ticked Over Curriculum Changes

O dear, a school raising its standards instead of dumbing them down. Now the Mom in the article will have to spend time with her non-honors son as well as the honors kid. (assuming she has the aptitude for either)
While obviously not every kid is going to end up performing at honors level in high school, challenging them in middle school so they enter high school on the best possible footing is probably a good idea. Clearly some parents don't want the additional challenge it may present for themselves, other are probably tired of East End schools that are geared to turning out landscapers and beach club staff, and would like to see more kids go to some better colleges. Manorville is definitely a different demographic than it was not too many years ago." Dec 19, 11 9:38 AM

Shinnecocks Reject Casino Partner Contract

At risk of furthering a pointless tangent, Hamlin helping out the Shinnecocks against a land grab in the 60's is admirable but would not have been necessary if someone in the tribe didn't have a side deal with the builder. Point being, as we have learned this week, not everyone in the tribe thinks alike as has seemed to have been the case from most reporting in recent years.
As far as piling on the Meadow Club about the Arthur Ashe incident, he, or any other black man, whether noted or obscure, would have received the same cold shoulder at most any church, firehouse, and at the working mans Southampton Golf Club as well at that time in history." Dec 19, 11 9:50 AM

And on the subject of golf i will reiterate a posted response to an earlier article on the Shinnecock casino issue.
Forget gambling, build a world class golf course on the land in Hampton Bays. Cops: One Arrested After East Quogue Brawl Over High School Football Game

Only one arrest involving 30-40 teens, some portion of which were from another district, and would have driven further East several more miles to be at the EQ school. Are we sure young Mr. Garcia wasn't defending himself?

Discord Erupts Over Shinnecock Vote On Casino Partner's Future

As part of giving the go ahead to any Shinnecock plans, on their land or elsewhere, an arrangement could be made for a PILOT program or Payment in Lieu of Taxes. Plenty of precedent for it such as in commercial leases to for profit companies occupying public property such as in the World Trade Center.

Developer Seeks Change To Westhampton Beach Zoning Code To Allow For New Supermarket

Hmm will the line of traffic to get in cross the tracks?
Seriously though, Eastern LI has more houses and population than the roads can handle, and an oversupply of smaller retail properties both within and without the villages, but a marked shortage of decent grocery stores. I was not in favor of the Tuckahoe one but the Glennon site in SHV sounds good if traffic can be dealt with. Same for the Riverhead rd site, will need to deal with traffic/ingress/egress safely which may involve a service lane or perhaps a access at Depot/Station road which wont make the resident there happy.
I think a Citarella at the vacant SW corner of Mill and Sunset, maybe combined with the bowling ally site, would be great too, again if you can deal with traffic and parking effectively." Jan 10, 12 10:36 AM

Contractor Claims Southampton Councilman Locked Him In Office After Worker Broke Into Home

A conservative is someone who believes in limited government as detailed in our Constitution. If by "run of the mill" you mean the mainstream of the Republican party, you would be wrong, very few republicans are actually conservatives. And even if he were endorsed by the Conservative party, that does not make him truly conservative.
If he indeed abused his authority, that would put him to the left end of the spectrum within the Republican party, and right in line with all the self serving big government authoritarians in the Democratic party. " Jan 12, 12 11:28 AM
