East End Hospice presents subdivision plans for Quiogue

A noble gesture in a bad location. Southampton planning needs to have a broader view.

First this acreage borders the creek. Recent thought has been that building next to water is not desirable. Why this is different is beyond me. Secondly it is mostly a residential area. It is at the fork of Montauk highway which has the boat store but it is really on Meetinghouse Road.

In the surrounding area they are hoping to develop Peters lane and there are plans to develop the old Dudley house (5 acres). Seems Southampton will forever change the essence of Quioge" Apr 26, 10 12:17 AM

Westhampton Beach business broken into; two others vandalized

Not sure it mattered but yeah he gave me the ole one two in citing WHB poopulation stats and my hyperbole for "hundreds of homes. I make no bones about it he was right on the numbers. What he was not right on was the assumption that every person blasting down meetinghouse Rd to Main street was a Quioge soccer Mom. Even when called on it he stuck to his guns and got defensive. When you are wrong your wrong...man up and move on.

I find his insights into the WHB political machine interesting so worthy of reading. What one must temper it with is if your are not his acolyte you are on the outs. It's ok by me, tho'" Apr 26, 10 12:03 PM

A model home for green living

As many have noted, being "green" at 4700 sq feet is very hard. The real challenge for any home is aesthetics and current code. To be truly energy efficient we need to completely re-think what a house should look like and how it should operate. The problem is that we try to "retrofit" "green" technology into existing space. Warren Bufft has a company that tried to go this route and even he failed. Sure it is green but frankly it looks like sea containers!" May 2, 10 10:06 PM

I played on a lot of these type fields. Without being an advocate for grass or turf let me point out: Grass plays true and has a nice natural give. The ground in WHB has been beaten and baked (don't they aerate?). Old carpet turf fields had a lot of injuries associated with them. The new simulated grass eliminates that. There was a beef awhile back about fields made from crushed rubber tires. that is no longer done. Todays fields are crushed clean rubber or cork. I just played a on a brand new cork field today. It's a little harder than rubber but the cork stays down better. Both are hotter than Hades on a sunny day. if you are going to be on the field 10 hours a day you should go turf. recognize also turf needs to be replenished after some time. Sorry for the disjointed thought process, but it was stream of consciousness" May 2, 10 10:23 PM

I've never seen a condo development north of S Carolina that didn't look dated and crappy 15 years aafter construction. The mindset of the condo owner coupled with the need to get 50% of the votes to appropriate funds means they do the bare minimum. It all regresses to the mean." May 4, 10 8:50 AM

Two faces of sustainable building: Traditional

Ms. Watson please check your numbers!!! You quoted "“The house uses so little energy. Today we made 12,000 watts,” he said proudly. “We have generated 1.77 million watts in the last 60 days. At 22 cents a kilowatt, that’s money we are saving.”

You are mixing apples and oranges. I am sure they can make 12,000 watts in a day but that is only 12 KILOWATTS or $2.64 ($0.22 x 12)

1.77M watts over 60 days is 2,960,000 watts per day (2,960 kilowatts) or 245 times GREATER than the 12,000 watts he was just bragging about. The numbers just don't pass the sniff test

While any effort should be lauded don't kid yourself, this is not green. This still consumes a fair amount of energy albeit, self generated (at least we assume). " May 7, 10 8:57 AM

Listed below are some simple steps to being greener

1. Don't have a pool. Pool pumps are a huge electrical draw. If you do have a pool have smaller one, don't heat it, or use solar heat/wind driven pool pump

2. No A/C. open the top windows during the day and upper floors. Draw curtains on the sunny side of the house. Have you house shaded by trees.

3. Dry your clothes outside, do a quick tumble to soften them

4. collect rainwater and outdoor shower water for the lawn/garden

5. Utilize solar and wind power

6. Your first instinct should be to hop on a bike for a small errand rather than back into the car

The objective to being green should be: cut total power usage. Cut fossil fuel and gas use, use clean energy (solar/wind/tidal). " May 7, 10 9:03 AM

So has anyone double checked the math? I'd like to think I am right in what I pointed out, but I am certainly open to someone educating me if I missed the point" May 10, 10 11:31 PM

Town working to ban gambling at Westhampton property to thwart potential Shinnecock bid

I am indifferent on gambling. Casinos hold no appeal for me so I'd consider myself relatively neutral on what goes in the space. I'd only like to point out that the plan for a "technology park" was one of the most lame brained ideas I'd heard in awhile. What makes anyone think Westhampton would be a "technology" mecca. I bet you'd end up w/ an alarm company and a cell phone store for all your wished for success. Personally, I'd rather see all the land return to pine barrens. Failing that I'd like to see a solar/wind farm to offset our energy consumption. Probably the last two things I'd want to see is a business park (yawn) but a casino may be good for downtown WHB." Since no one bothered to check my numbers I wrote the author. She kindly responed: "Thank you for reading and for sending this information to me. I'm always glad to get feedback from readers, particularly ones who are so well informed.

Those statements in the article are direct quotes, thus they should not be edited, correct or not. Please call me if you'd like to discuss further.

So in effect. If it's a diret quote you can lie or at the very least advocate. As for the notion of journalistic integrity, I think here response says more than I can. I guess fact checkers are a "perk"." May 13, 10 12:26 PM
