Debate over Jewish religious boundary begins to heat up

I've started a new religion and I'd like you all to join.

Rather than string wires like silly string art I'll just use an existing area roadmap. Heck that's too hard...so let's say anyone in exchange 288 can join...no wait area code 631! My religion is simple: please and thank you predominate most requests/acknowledgments. Everyone should be kind, happy and drive safely. Enjoy a morning coffee. Take a bike ride. For initiations we'll go in the ocean when the waves are up. Oh and our high holy moment is at 5ish when the kids are reading or playing nicely and I am enjoying a frosty beer while digging my feet into the sand thinking about the lamb steak I am going to cook on a hot smoky grill and the bottle of new Zealand ice sold Sauvignon blanc while I am waiting.

Come back at me all ye' haters!!!

And forgive me for the run on sentence...." Oct 2, 10 9:00 PM

I like the notion of recently reformed! There is always room for improvement. Of course, I might just amend it back.

As for the lovers of veggies and any other particulars that all works well for me. My overall point is just do what is enjoyable and non-intrusive to all.

As for the 631 limitation it was spoof on imaginary boundaries...but you knew that" Oct 3, 10 9:03 PM

By my reckoning the SoL has nothing to do with an Eruv or religious freedom. It was a gift from France with kitschy poem by Emma Lazarus ""Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

No mention of religion at all.

Debate over Jewish religious boundary begins to heat up

OK here's the rub that everyone seems to be missing:

The first attempt at the eruv failed. The basic point ai gleaned from the Youtube videos was that it would allow orthodox jews to attend services on the Sabbath and do some basic tasks (stroller etc). I sense it was met with such hostility, moreso b/c of the Rabbi and his ways and means, rather than the eruv itself.

That being said this second effort is a pretty large eruv. What is very clear is that the first premise (getting to Sabbath) is not a factor anymore. Does one really think that they are pushing a stroller from Quogue to Westhampton? So why such a wide eruv if the initial premise was to facilitate pushing strollers and wheelchairs (see You tube town hall meeting on this)? Simple: the larger eruv accomplishes the same objective as the first eruv but without the local approval.

Westhampton Beach Eruv Proposal Moves Forward

I grew up in OCNJ (34th and Asbury) and later on 27th. The baptist tent has been an annual event but not a permanent fixture. Additionally, OCNJ was specifically founded as a religious haven (see Blue Laws...and it is still a dry town).

I really don't care about the eruv...do you really think anyone will be pushing a stroller from Quogue? I think though the Rabbi is a very disingenuous person...and I am being kind. " Nov 2, 10 12:15 PM

Doesn't matter who or what you are, you still must conform to local codes! Do you think a Church could covert to a casino? Orphanage? Prison?

I think not" Nov 2, 10 12:17 PM

Just think about the argument for a second:

The jewish people are asking Westhampton to allow something that the people denied themselves.

Sounds dumb to me

Highhat remains correct in the sense that the past infractions should be cured:

1. the rabbi's house
2. parking

I don't live on a contiguous street but I go past it enough to empathize with residents who have 2-6 cars parked in front of their houses. Some streets nearby lack high curbs and drivers feel entitled to pull up on the grass.

While it is not a full blown catering hall, I'd have to say Id be a bit annoyed if a place of worship used their bldg/land improperly." Nov 2, 10 12:29 PM

Here's a fun little game we can all play...

If you had to choose one person who has posted on this Board who you think would be a good neigher who would it be?

Conversely, if there is one person on this Board who you think would make for a poor neighbor who would it be?

Sometimes people just can't see how they appear to others.
" Nov 4, 10 12:07 PM

Your right, I may not want to live next to me" Nov 4, 10 12:26 PM

Is Davidsline the same clown who got a verbal beat down on Dean Speier's blog?
" Nov 4, 10 12:29 PM

It's two sentences in perfectly correct grammar. I get the weird sense you are a paid blogger who has a well defined agenda and anyone who doesn't toe your line is considered the enemy, a bigot, anti-semite or whatever big school names you so choose.

Frankly I really don't care about an eruv. It literally means nothing in my life. What I do take exception to are vocal minorities jamming their agenda down one's throat. I'm not saying that is you in particular but if the shoe fits.....

" Nov 4, 10 3:42 PM

uhh maybe you misread the article but the eruv covers WHB, Quiogue and Quogue. Quiogue is an unincorporated village and the other two are incorporated. So what the hell are you talking about exactly?

You may now join Davidsline as two neighbors I don't want.." Nov 4, 10 3:45 PM

No one....no group...and No one on this stupid board is even hinting that a religion is "subject" or "forced" on anyone. Med up.

If you are insinuating that "subject" means that you see a particular group's symbols than you really need a new life b/c those images and symbols are all around you (try US coinage to start). Existing is one thing...existing and reacting to them is quite another

" Nov 5, 10 2:05 PM

...have more if you really feel the need to play the schoolyard name game" Nov 5, 10 2:08 PM

So here's the rub. I had a guy in my building who was simply toxic. I mean he was anti-charismatic. There are some people who draw a crow and are well liked by all. This guy was as social hand grenade. He was rude, argumentative, and convoluted. Seeing this guy turn the corner elicited a groan. I will grant he had an agenda and a vision. But the way he delivered his message was so infuriating to all that people ignored the message and focused on him. While this guy is now deceased its as if he lives on through davidsline.

Davidsline....think honestly about yourself here. The vitriol cast at you has obscured your message. Maybe the fear isn't the eruv itself, but sphincters like you. If you are the self appointed mouthpiece than we can only assume your backers are a bunch of grade A weenies

Tis a shame since th guy in my building actually had a good ideas" Nov 5, 10 2:19 PM

Oh no I've already thrown that one out before. You just missed it.

It just seems peculiar to me that you talk of the eruv and the related issues from a more macro or 50,000 foot view. You never really speak of what it's like to live on the same street as the synagogue or more local issues.

It makes one think you might think never have been to Sunset avenue and think Quiogue and Quogue are the same thing." Nov 22, 10 9:33 AM

You played the bigot card like you were playing "war" with a pinochle deck.

You tried sarcasm....which frankly was so weak (heck you even had to tell someone it was sarcasm...then again maybe that's better than some cheesy emoticon)

Now I am faced with schoolyard banter which mirrors a kindergarten taunt.

Can you even tell a knock knock joke?

Look you have a rail thin position you want to beat into anyone who dares post. In fact you seem to be the sole person expressing that viewpoint with such ardor. Sadly, you are also a bit boring yet I think you are well educated but not necessarily worldly. Others who posted don't have an advocate position but had a more iterative exchange. While they may not agree with you they do concede valid points. These people seem more intelligent than your Dean Faber rants.

As I mentioned once before, you might have good ideas but you are a social hand grenade.

At the risk of speaking for many I think you should consider the rabbi's reputation among many:
1. That ugly "information session" which you can view on You Tube did not put him in a good light
2. The code violations which he continues to flout
3. The latest effort with the eruv seems to be an end around.

The fact is I don't trust the guy or his intentions. Maybe others feel the same way. Have you asked? I think the issue is slightly larger than your rail thin mission" Nov 22, 10 11:22 PM

Hey Irv, you seem to have some level of intelligence but name calling and requesting biblical plagues makes you sound like you are in a fit of hysteria instead of a logical debate. My advice is kill the shill and you might get heard.

My random thoughts for which I am partially right and surely to be fully scorched:

WHD has some of the ugliest architecture north of Cape May

WHD really does look like a land grab. WTF do you do if you need a quart of milk? It's not a village by in any commercial sense - only as a differentiator from other governments.

Talking of beach access in WHD, WHB or anywhere else is inane if you can't park on Dune Road. Think about it.

Between owning houses I rented for three years. I looked at a few places in WHD b/c I wanted beach access. My conversation went like this "how much?" Answer: "60K for Julyand August" I parried "Don't you know there is a recession and I looked at a dozen places in WHD all of which are available and it's mid June?" Answer "I know but that is what I need to get to cover my carrying costs" Dumb spec buyers.

Just for the record if you are wiped out by a hurricane or storm surge do not go crying about it. You were the people who built so close to the water. Current Code differs w/ the pilings requirement but let me tell you it does not make you safe. Once the shift the whole house goes south fast.

Just for the record, I respect your right to protect your ugly houses but don't think a 'wrong' in history perpetually makes you 'right'" Nov 29, 10 11:34 PM

Seems to me if my house is an eyesore and unsafe it is my responsibility to clear it. Come the next blow down, I think the WHD homeowners should be responsible for their flotsam and jetsam.

Read Sudden Sea about the 1938 Hurricane. In RI those houses were built on the same spit of land as WHD. They were smart enough not to rebuild. Why would we be so dumb?

Also why isn't any new mud/sand called wetlands and preserved as such?" Nov 30, 10 3:19 PM

Flood insurance NEVER pays for the value of the land. That doesn't matter if you are in WHD or anywhere else.

What do the Trustees have to do with the protecting the bay and the beach. My understanding was it was the Army Corp of engineers that did not complete a series of jetties that they promised. Am I wrong?

And how can you say "out of control" when WHD is suing for multiple bank accounts? THAT is out of control!

Do you really believe what you write? Your crap town has no commerce, one stop sign, a rent a cop, and architecture that looks like it's from the SIMS.
