Questions are raised over Town Board candidate's fund-raising restrictions

The trailer about the 45th wedding anniversary was from the 2-15-2007 article.

I don't know the couple but whole heartedly agree." Feb 3, 10 4:25 PM

Home in Mastic funded by Southampton Town Section 8 money shut down

On this issue or porting; I assume this goes both ways so there must be people with vouchers that did not originate in Southampton Town but from other places. How many of this type is in the Town?" Feb 8, 10 1:29 PM

Moody's downgrades Southampton Town's bond rating

Lucky it wasn't more than one level. You have a police arbitration coming up and no union cooperation to either defer a raise or go for a payroll lag." Feb 19, 10 10:57 AM

Southampton Village denies request for police records

Yes there is. Do you want cops moonlighting in bars as bouncers where the possibility of graft occurs for overlooking age requirements? I believe the NYC police require that secondary employment be reported and certain enterprises, like bars, are off limits." Feb 19, 10 11:04 AM

East Hampton police contract caps annual raises at three percent

unless there are reductions we do not know about there are no concessions here. And coming to a negotiated agreement rather than an arbitration is not a concession, nor is it a savings. " Mar 1, 10 2:23 PM

Business partners will seek shorter lease to open skydiving operation at Gabreski Airport

I was under the impression either they or another firm was using the airport in East Moriches for sky-diving, maybe I heard wrong. And perhaps at 14,000 feet their plane cannot be heard, but they still have to take off, climb, and then land. I hear the glider planes all the time when they are climbing to gain altitude prior to release of the glider." Mar 2, 10 1:48 PM

County lawmakers look at possible sites for Shinnecock casinos

Take about transparency in government! This whole process seems to be entirely done behind closed doors. Last time I checked Gabreski was in Westhampton, which is considered by most to be part of the South Fork.
The Technology Park is a good idea for Gabreski as this will bring in better paying jobs - I doubt a gaming casino will. Also, the Rechler project was on County owned land, not private. So are they talking airport or Pine Barren property in private hands? There is one well known local individual who owns a fair amount of that property. Come on Press, do some investigative digging here." Mar 16, 10 11:03 AM

Firefighters extinguish brush fire in Westhampton

Nice work by the fire department
Somewhat surprised it was in a new growth area from the 1995 fires, in fact its scary. And Mr Z is right - nobody wants a repeat of that event!!!" Mar 16, 10 11:12 AM

Levy switches parties, announces run for governor

Interesting. I sent him a letter some time ago about his illegal immigration statements - he actually called me on the phone and we chatted about it for 15 minutes or so. I've never had that happen with an elected official. His fiscal responsibility position is pretty good but I think he has a long row to hoe." Mar 23, 10 4:51 PM

Southampton Village mayor and police chief at odds over officers' secondary employment applications

The fact that Police salaries on the Island are so high is because of the Taylor Law; a very smart Nassau County Attorney in the late 1970's and 1980's skillfully whipsawed arbitrator's awards beginning with Nassau County police, then taking the Suffolk County police to arbitration and getting what Nassau got plus a little more - and repeating the process. The Town and Village police unions followed suit. Police compensation has nothing to do with productivity or anything else. Yes, they should be compensated for the nature of their work but the system is way out of whack. Few unions settle, they rely on arbitration or the threat of arbitration. UInfortunately for the taxpayer it works." Mar 23, 10 5:07 PM

East Hampton plans to cut number of departments in half, offer early retirement

yep - you're right

Shinnecocks clear last hurdle; recognition expected by July

Wow - you're not kidding - assuming the info is true the author has a lot of guts to come forward like that. I wouldn't be surpised though - all this money really sets an environment for corruption. I hope the entire tribe benefits, and not just a select few. " Apr 5, 10 4:50 PM

Abrupt and tearful end to Stony Brook Southampton dream

Good point here goldenrod
Its my understanding nursing schools and programs are in decline around the country, yet at the very same time there is a shortage of nurses and related medical technicians. With proximity to Southampton Hospital and also Peconic in Riverhead it seems like an idea worth investigating. New York City is not far away, a real market for medical occupations after graduation.

Gumbs returned to Shinnecock Nation leadership role by vote

Well cited Soundview;
Just look at Atlantic City and the non-delivered promise of prosperity and renovation to that city;
The only saving grace is that gambling money going to other states would stay here but thats not much of a reason to establish a casino here on the East End.
Let's hope the promised development of Gabreski Airport delivers higher paying tech jobs." Apr 12, 10 2:03 PM

Financial investigation unearths $3 million deficit in Southampton Town beach fund

OK - I'm a bit confused - I thought the forensic audits said there were no deficits - soooo is there a deficit or not? Oh, those were capital accounts, this an an enterprise account. Understood, but does this mean there needs to be a forensic enterprise accounting? did anyone else note the ATH comment:

"She added that there will also be less money available to stabilize the tax rate in the town."

tax increase anyone?

Pilots charge that politics played a role in Levy's decision to add clause to leases at Gabreski Airport

The gentlemen have a good point. As I understand it there is no public money in their project, it seems to be a private project on public land. Their lease I assume is at market rate with no public subsidy. The fact however, is that since it is public (County) land I assume the County is within its rights to demand prevailing wage.
But that really is short-sided and only delays development at the long under-utilized site. And the gentlemen are probably correct in that the construction unions essentially bought the law in exchage for campaign contributions." Apr 23, 10 4:01 PM

Southampton Town comptroller works out tax lien issues

Calling Ronnie Deutsch!!!!
Let the woman work out her personal financial business with IRS. I can tell you from personal experience IRS is not always correct and is not the efficient organization they would like to think they are. They lose documents, they make mistakes. And yes, people do beat them in court." Apr 23, 10 4:09 PM

Sick days strain Westhampton Beach Police Department

and every LIRR employee seems to go out with a disabilty pension, even the desk job employees. These officers may have legitimate injuries, however the abuse that occurs in the public sector when it comes to disabilities taints virtually every case." May 4, 10 2:23 PM
