Oddone won't take stand; both sides rest, and closing arguments slated Tuesday

I don't understand why people assume that members of a certain profession behave and act in a certain way. That's like me...a person of color saying that all white people are racists. By all accounts, Andy was anything but aggressive, HELLO inmates that he was responsible at the Suffolk County Jail created a mural in his honor, they donated their commissary money to his family. Anyone who knew him had nothing but good things to say about him. Andy's back was turned to Mr. Oddone when he jumped on him and put him in the choke hold...where I come from if a person turns their back on you...they are done with you. Why wont Mr. Oddone take the stand in his own defense. It would be interesting to hear how he explains his actions...or perhaps he was in such a rage that he can't recall? All I ask is that you don't blame the victim. Place the blame for what happened where it belongs, at the hands of Mr. Anthony Oddone. He did not have to do what he did. He could have gotten down off of the table when asked...he could have picked himself up and walked away...instead he chose to be uncooperative and disrespectful, he chose to attack Andy from behind, and that to me says a lot about his character. End of Story. " Nov 27, 09 10:43 AM

Wow...All of Mr. Oddones friends are forgetting his past run ins with the law due to his aggressive behavior. Was the incident up in Cobelskill out of character as well? Your friend murdered someone. People are not going to view him as anything more than the lowest kind of person especially members of the community where is victim grew up. Which is it? Did he opt not to take the stand or did his attorney advise him not to. There are two different stories out there. Why not take the stand in his own defense? Explain his frame of mind, explain why he still felt threatened when Andy turned his back on him. If it was all a tragic accident as you say...and if Mr. Oddone is indeed remorseful about what happened, wouldn't he want the jury to hear that from his own lips. I hope none of you Devils advocates ever have to suffer through what Andy's family has suffered through. Closing arguments begin tomorrow...hopefully the verdict will be in before Christmas. Andy's family needs closure. Not that it will help. Second Christmas without Daddy... " Nov 30, 09 12:00 PM

Oddone jury will consider lesser charges

Were you there Bayshore? Or are you just making a comment based on your personal opinion of persons who work in Law enforcement. Andy was not a bully it was not in his personality at all to consider himself above the law simply because he was a corrections officer. My question still remains. Why didn't Mr. Oddone get off the table when he was asked politely to do so? Why did he find it necessary to instead to be disrespectful and use profane language. This is based on EYEWITNESS testimony. Inmates at the Suffolk County Jail where Andy worked have nothing but good things to say about him. Please refrain from painting all corrections officers and others who wear a badge with the same negative brush stroke. In the case of Andy..its simply not true. They both used poor judgment, but Andy didn't kill anyone...he was murdered. Mr. Oddone not only jumped him from behind and he wouldn't let go of him even when he was rendered unconscious. WHY? that's what I want to know. Unfortunately, Mr. Oddone does not have the courage to answer that question." Dec 1, 09 3:31 PM

Jury now deliberating in Oddone trial

I'm wondering if the verdict does not go the way Oddone and his supporters think it should, will they pay for his appeal? I mean if the Jury makes a decision based on the facts..." Dec 3, 09 12:26 PM

Jury now deliberating in Oddone trial

Thanks for enlightening me. " Dec 3, 09 3:01 PM

Im wondering why he just didnt hop a cab after he was pushed from the table...no he jumped Andy from behind, choked him until he was unconscious and fell to the ground, and he continued to choke him...even though he wasn't fighting back. Its not until Andy is almost dead, that he lets go, then he decides to hop a cab. Do you think he was telling the cabby to keep moving because he was in a hurry to get home? Come on. He knew he had done something over the top, he may not have know that he had caused a mans death, but he knew he had gone to far. He wanted no part of a police stop. " Dec 3, 09 3:13 PM

Defense seeks mistrial; Judge rejects motion

Actually I was born an raised in the village of Southampton. I no longer reside there. I'm sure everyone knows what I meant by my comment. In as far as the case being air tight... I just want to see Mr. Oddone held accountable for his actions. I don't care if it was Murder 2 or Manslaughter. He killed someone. There is definitely something off about an individual who can do what he did. Was he so caught up in the moment that he didn't realize that the threat was neutralized? He should not be allowed to walk free. Even if I didnt know Andy, I would still feel the same way." Dec 4, 09 9:22 AM

Seventh day of deliberations ends with no verdict in Oddone case

They both made poor choices that night and Andy ended up dead because of it. I just can not get passed the fact that Mr. Oddone didn't let go after it was clear that Andy was incapacitated. When people tried to stop him, hit him, pull him off, he still wouldn't let go. Again we are all Arm Chair Quarterbacks on this with our coulda shoulda woulda's...Did Andy have to push him off of the table? No...Did Mr. Oddone have to in turn choke a man who's back was turned to him? No. Did he have to continue that choke hold after it was obvious there was no threat? No. I can acknowledge the fact that Andy made the first move. Its tragic, but at the end of the day, Mr. Oddone took someones life. He should answer for that. " Dec 9, 09 12:38 PM

Check with the DA up in Schoharie County, NY. He was on probation there for a crime some say he didn't commit. " Dec 9, 09 12:58 PM

At any rate the fact that the Jury has taken so much time to deliberate discredits some earlier posts that suggested that the Jury had already made up their mind to convict. " Dec 10, 09 12:09 PM

He should be convicted of something. He took a life. After all is said and done, whatever the Jury decides. I would like to here from Mr. Oddone himself. Is he sorry for what he did? Is there an ounce of remorse in his heart. Can he admit that he did something wrong? Someone mentioned in a post on here that, if they had been involved in this situation, that had they been in Mr. Oddone's shoes they would not have left the scene. I agree. If he was just defending himself she should have stuck around and continued to defend himself. I know his friends have stated on many occasions that he feels terrible about what happend. I want to hear it from him. I want him to apologize it Andy's Widow, and his children. " Dec 10, 09 12:54 PM

Oddone trial waiting game: some tenderness among the tension

HB I understand your grief...but your posts are not much better than some of the post left here by alleged Oddone supporters. All of us including you should try to refrain from name calling and insults. To me, it demeans Andy's memory. Its hard not to retaliate, but sometimes the best weapon against the kind of ignorance I've seen posted here, is to ignore it. " Dec 10, 09 4:50 PM

Seventh day of deliberations ends with no verdict in Oddone case

He fled because he was in fear of his life? Or in fear of being arrested? If he was simply defending himself he should have stuck around...waited outside for the police, so that he could give his side of things. His friends were there to back him up if he was in any danger...they are so loyal I'm sure they wouldn't have let anything happen to their friend. Oh wait they stood there while other patrons tried to pull him off, of his victim. They did nothing to stop him...but they did see the gravity of the situation and hustled him out of the club. Why didn't they take the stand in his defense? One witness flew in from Europe to testify. I am a reasonable person. Mr. Oddone behaved unreasonably. " Dec 10, 09 5:16 PM

Beaten in jail for over a year and half? If that really happend to Mr. Oddone, it truely is a terrible thing. I'm just wondering why this has not been mentioned before. Not by his attorney, not by anyone besides you that I know of. I suppose Mr. Oddone did not want it brought out in the open, because that would mean more beatings, in retaliation. It seems everyone is to blame for what landed Mr. Oddone in jail except Mr. Oddone himself. Yes Andy pushed him off the table, and I suppose Mr. Oddone did feel that he was in mortal danger because the big bad bouncer pushed him off the table. So he had to to choke him out to protect himself. The only problem I have with it is this..and I will say it again for the millioneth time....WHY DIDNT HE STOP WHEN ANDY WAS INCAPACITATED AND OF NO THREAT TO HIM? I guess what annoys all of us on here is that none of you can acknowledge the fact that what your friend did was wrong. Andy shouldn't have pushed him and Mr. Oddone shouldn't have choked Andy to death. Well they both made poor choices that night one of them payed with his life, and the other needs to pay for his choice as well, and if that means 4 years ...25 years of beatings...then so be it. You reap what you sow. " Dec 11, 09 11:05 AM

Oddone guilty of first-degree manslaughter, jury announces Monday

Why are some people so hateful? Mr. Oddone Killed someone. He has to answer for that. He went to far, and that is why the Jury rendered the verdict of Manslaughter. They can appeal, but I doubt it leads to anything. He didn't mean to kill Andy but his actions caused Andy's death. He is not a victim. Both men made a poor choice that night. Andy is dead he paid for that choice with his life. Mr. Oddone is going to pay for his choice with time spent behind bars. Even if he is sentenced to the Max, there will be the possibility of parole. He will walk free again, but his life will never be what it could have been. I agree with Andy's widow, there are no winners here. I pray that this brings some closure to the Reister family. This holiday will be bittersweet, those of us who are able to feel compassion will be thinking about you and yours. God Bless.

Actually he hit someone with a beer bottle..." Dec 16, 09 1:48 PM

Andy was an ordinary man, who happened to be a corrections officer. The reaction would have been the same. Andy was a local, not only that an all around good person. People are not upset because he was a corrections officer that was killed, while moonlighting as a bouncer, people wanted justice for Andy the man, the husband, the father, the friend, the hometown boy. The resentment of what happened goes far beyond Andys chosen profession. When Tony killed Andy in a way he became a symbol of all the things that we locals dislike the most about summer people, It speaks to the disrespect, arrogance, the perception that the rules social courtesy don't apply to them, and they can do whatever they like, even kill another person, and we just have to put up with it. His judgment was impaired? You do not behave any differently while intoxicated than you do stone sober. At least someone is finally referring to him as a man and not a "kid". I guess his childhood was over the moment he killed Andy. Yes there is a lesson to be learned from all this. Mr. Oddone will have plenty of time to do so." Dec 16, 09 2:09 PM

Shinnecock Indian Nation wins preliminary federal recognition

I agree with BeachGal, there is plenty of blame to spread around regarding the drug culture in our community. I grew up in Southampton, and contrary to popular belief, the descendants of the pilgrims were more deeply involved in drug and alcohol abuse than the native Americans, or other minority groups. Of course since all you read about in the Press is about arrests on the "Hill" and the "Res" it would easy to assume that the drug trade is rampant in these sections of the community. What you don't read about is the effort of tribal members to steer their young people away from the drug culture, or about programs on the Res that are there to support academic achievement. Every community has in it members that are there to help build and members that are there to destroy. You can not paint a whole community or in this case a tribe, in a negative light based on the actions of a few. They are not a representation of the entire tribe. Perhaps instead of judging, you should take a moment and learn something about the first people. " Dec 21, 09 2:11 PM

Shinnecocks are looking at benefits that come with federal recognition

Jack you can walk into a bank and obtain a mortgage. If a tribe member builds on the reservation. That's not an option to them. Jack, What you fail to understand is before this country was "discovered" The Shinniecocks and other native people were already here. Their land, culture, their entire way of life was taken away from them by settlers who in their Euro centric ignorance thought the natives here nothing but savages with no right to the land they lived on for thousands of years and who needed to become civilized like they were. I see based on your post, nothing much has changed. Did it ever occur to you that these government programs were put in place to address a wrong that was done to all native American people? There isn't enough money in the world to heal the wounds inflicted on these people, the first people. If anyone in this country is entitled to government assistance, they are.

You say take control of your own destiny and make something of yourselves. The fact that you can make that statement speaks volumes and points to your ignorance in regards to the Shinnecock nation. You know only what you read in the Press which rarely reports anything positive about the people on the Reservation. They are teachers, business owners, school administrators, active members of the Southampton Community. Many have as you put it "made" something of themselves and have chosen to stay in this community and share what they have become, others have gone on to do brilliant things outside of this community. Rabbit is correct, walk a mile in someone elses' shoes, or better yet, take the time to get to know your neighbors, you'd be surprised what you could learn. " Dec 23, 09 9:31 AM

There are tribe members who do own homes off the reservation, and pay taxes and mortgage payments. My statement regarding obtaining a mortgage was not made as a complaint. They should ask for something more, and different. You have no idea how members of the Tribe have been treated over the years, in school, by law enforcement. People learn a stereotype and apply to everyone who comes off the reservation. There is a certain amount of personal responsibility that everyone holds for how their lives turn out, but the US Government also knows of its historical responsibility to Native Americans. They cant undo what has been done to Native Americans in this country, but they can certainly help those who are willing to help themselves. I know I'm wasting my time with this post. The whole pull yourself up by your boot straps thing is great...except its hard to do when someone else has there boot on your kneck. " Dec 23, 09 12:27 PM

Southampton Village Police pursue suspected DWI driver before dropping chase

This is nothing new, Village Police never chase anyone onto the reservation. This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened. Its been going on for years. I guess suddenly its news worthy. I do agree that it should be followed up on, though what exactly could be done? Yes they were traveling at a high rate of speed, no they did not stop when signaled to, so perhaps they were drunk, but at this point could anything be done about it? I doubt it. That's life in the other Hamptons... " Feb 4, 10 2:40 PM

Still don't know why this particular case rated a write up...like I said before its not the first time nor will it be the last. However, whomever the driver was, does have to come off the Res eventually, I have a feeling that there is an APB out on that car and plate. They will be picked up eventually. I'm just wondering if the Press will write that up as well. I will cut you guys some slack (Press) Its winter...not a to much going on." Feb 11, 10 12:44 PM

Southampton Village denies request for police records

I think the village is making things worse by not releasing the records. All they have to do is show which offers requested permission to work a second job, and if they were approved or not. They are not required to provide information on where these officers wanted to work or are working. So give the man what he wants. I also think the press should stop aiding Mr. Broich his Count of Monte Cristo like vendetta against the police department by printing articles like this." Feb 22, 10 10:21 AM

I seriously doubt it. " Feb 22, 10 3:50 PM

There is no court order YET...but it could come to that if they continue with their refusals. I think they should research the law themselves before refusing a request like this. As stated in the article, the information that they can provide in this case is limited. Who applied for permission to work a second job and who was granted permission. The village may not provide information on where the officers are working or where they wanted to work." Feb 22, 10 3:55 PM

You are a very scary person..." Feb 22, 10 4:05 PM

Hmmm I didn't see a mention of that in the Press...I wonder why. " Feb 22, 10 4:06 PM

Its none of your business what they do on their own time. Being employed by the village makes them accountable to village officials, not you or any other resident.

In regards to our President,On Janurary 4th the United States Senate certified the election of Barack Obama. All it would have taken is for ONE Republican Senator to stand up challenging the election on this issue. Had this occured there would have been a full blown hearing on the matter before the election was certified. Not one Republican senator stood up.

These claims about Obama's birth certificate have been investigated by the Republican Annenberg Fact check. They were given access to the long form birth certificate. They said it is legit.

There are also newspaper birth announcements in both of Hawaii's papers from August of 1961 that can be seen at any number of web sites.

Perhaps you are the one who needs to "WAKE UP" and do some fact checking of your own instead of spouting off what you've heard or read about." Feb 22, 10 4:18 PM

Since when does 7-11 equal rif raf and day laborers? It always means slurpee's to me. The location period was not a good idea. No one is going to pull in there and run the risk of being stuck waiting for a break in morning traffic. That's the reason its empty. " Feb 25, 10 1:15 PM

Southampton Village releases some secondary employment information

What exactly is the point of all this? Is this really news? For Pete's sake, almost every local has a second job. " Mar 3, 10 3:58 PM

A denied request by a rather vindictive former employee has turned into a constitutional issue? This has nothing to do with the public's right to know and everything to do with one mans personal grudge against the department. Prior to this request being denied, NO ONE cared what these officers did on their own time. Now all of a sudden its a burning issue. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could be sued just for being a pain in the buttocks. " Mar 4, 10 1:43 PM

No I'm not kidding. NO ONE CARED what these officers were doing on their OWN time UNTIL the FOIL requests were denied. Now all of sudden people are debating constitutional rights, and the public's need to know. The person who started this whole mess did so to be a pain in the buttocks. So yes it would be nice if you could take someone to court for being a pain in the buttocks. How much money as this person cost the village with his lawsuits? He continues to stir the pot and people continue to eat the slop that he is dishing out. Yes we live in the United States of America, I love it. Wouldn't live any other place, because I can freely dream of suing someone for being a pain and write about it without fear. " Mar 5, 10 2:11 PM
