Zappone to be appointed deputy supervisor of Southampton Town

What highhat never posts here, is that Southampton Town and Westhampton Beach are the ONLY two police departments throughout New York state that have this provision in the portion of the retirement law that covers them. In any other police department, one need not worry about being the target of a political vendetta as was the case here. It is not a "contractual" issue, it is part of the retirement law, THAT HAS NEVER BEEN ENFORCED BY NYS STATE RETIREMENT, OR THE TOWN OF SOUTHAMPTON. Indeed the state reitrement system has declined to get involved in the issue. The law merely states that POs who complete 20 years are then held at the "pleasure" of the town board. Apparently it did not "pleasure" a majority of the Town Board to force these people into retirement.
Someday, highhat will reveal his true motives and why he has such a hair up his wazoo for cops. " Dec 19, 09 5:54 PM

Westhampton Beach is a village, not a Town.

In your world, should Police Officers prohibited form exercising their Constitutional rights?

If it was tabled without discussion, perhaps that is because there was no support for it beyond Linda Kabot, and the Chief." Dec 20, 09 10:03 AM

East End still digging out after record snow

The Hwy folks have been out since yesterday afternoon, well before the heavy snow came due to black ice. Now after working almost 24 hours straight, you folks have nothing to do but complain. The winds were blowing at 30 mph + and there are 450 miles of roads and about 40 people to plow them. The snow was back on the roads right after it was plowed. Kinda like shoveling you know what against the tide. Trucks are getting stuck everywhere, and idiots with 4x4s think they can drive at normal speeds.
The leaves didnt fall till Thanksgiving and you want all of them picked up 2 days later. Grow up .

Joe Shaw, why don't you do the right thing and see if you can get a reporter in a town snow plow so he can give a fair report to these complainers?

Sunshine, did you try calling the Highway Deopartment and not town hall? (duh) Try the police department Non emergency #, if there is no answer at Hwy. " Dec 20, 09 12:49 PM

I don't like cops who use their uniforms to bully citizens and their elected representatives

You don't like cops. PERIOD.

The 2008 town board meeting was infamous in your eyes only, blinded as they may be. " Dec 20, 09 12:53 PM

"I cite the section of Town regulations that states that police officers must retire after twenty years. "

It is state retirement law, not town law. And you will not find the word "must" in there until it refers to a PO attaining the age of 55." Dec 21, 09 11:50 AM

If your taxes went up $800.00 I would presume MOST of that was school taxes.

The Big Duck is maintained by Parks and Recreation, not the Highway department. " Dec 21, 09 7:12 PM

Gregg Allman now on the side of the angels

Love the brothers together or on a solo tour like this, but those prices are just too much!! It's normally about $75.00 to see the whole band at Jones Beach or even at the Beacon. Catch you in the summer, or maybe for March Madness Gregg." Dec 23, 09 4:24 PM

East Hampton Town harbormaster arrested for marijuana possession

The sole purpose of bail is to ensure someone returns to court. It is not punishment and it is illegal to use it as thus. The idea that this guy would not skip town for a charge like this warrants low bail. It would be returned after a trial. You know, that thing that we are all entitled too. With ALL the evidence, ALL the witnesses, statements etc, not a conviction based on a few paragraphs in a newspaper or on a website. " Jan 6, 10 3:50 PM

Southampton political committees must hold off on choosing special election nominees

Or, you could pick up the phone, talk to any of the Town Board members and ask them directly what occurred. " Jan 6, 10 7:11 PM

Those are some pretty strong claims, oldhippie.

Kind of so strong it takes away any credibility you may have thought you had. In your effort to defend this gentleman, you actually hurt his case in the public by making those claims. " Jan 7, 10 3:09 PM

You misunderstood my statement. I meant no ill will towards the gentleman that was arrested.
However, oldhippies claim that he scores his best pot from cops is really pushing the envelope of credibility, and THAT tends to distort anything good that oldhipie may have to say.

I previously posted that this fellow is innocent till proven guilty and he should not be judged on a newspaper story.

FWIW, I fully support any efforts to at least decriminalize maryjane if not legalizing it altogether. " Jan 7, 10 6:21 PM

Care to name it? I've never heard of a national "prison guards" union. " Jan 8, 10 12:06 PM

Southampton Town works out departmental changes

The vote was 4-0 with Mr Nuzzi abstaining on Dec 28. That would mean that Anna and Sally both voted for it.
And FWIW, DeMaria was running it under Mr Masterson. There is only a change in title and a small raise.
DeMaria is an engineer, makes him qualified to do this work. " Jan 10, 10 9:15 AM

Contrary to Franks opinion, I am not an "insider". The story is self explanatory. The first paragraph states this occurrd last month. The story goes on to say that Mr Nuzzi abstained, and that the vote was 4-0. That would mean that Sally, Anna, Linda, and Nancy voted in favor of it.
Mr. DeMaria had been running the waste management. The story further states that he is an engineer.
It all seems pretty evident, just dont read the story with a political eye.
As to why it didn't happen under Mr Masterson, ask the town board. " Jan 10, 10 5:37 PM

"controlled by the board...the GOP board."
Nothing GOP there, Anna and Sally AND Linda and Nancy voted for this. Seems bi-partisan to me. " Jan 10, 10 5:40 PM

Southampton Town comptroller reappointment thwarted

Yes, the "abstain" votes allows the board a chance to see the audits of work done under Ms. Wright and use it as sort of a "report card". Seams like a resonable action to take.
She wasn't fired or anything, just wasn't confirmed until all the information is available to review. . " Jan 14, 10 11:01 AM

You are correct. It was the "electorate " who placed these folks in office. Now, don't you think you should alow them some time to gets things in order?
I realize two weeks is a lifetime in politics, but I find it hard to fathom that you have passed judgement based on a single vote. " Jan 14, 10 11:03 AM

Lt. William Hughes named Republican nominee for vacant Southampton Town Board seat

Some of you folks may want to take a deep breath and talk to Bill Hughes. He is a well respected member of the Hampton Bays community. If he had just retired and collected his pension, that would be of no concern to you. But instead he has opted to once again serve the public, as he has since he was a 19 year old kid in the jungles of Vietnam. He will not speak often or openly of that service, but it was indeed beyond that of the average grunt.
You may also want to look to the north of us in Riverhead Town, where retired police on the board has been almost a constant for many years. The politicians come and go, but when a retired cop/civil servant enters the political arena the taxpayers get someone who has "been there, done that" It is like institutional memory, it can't be bought.
Most of you have never met Bill or you wouldn't be posting the accusations that you are. And for info he is only a spry 60. " Jan 14, 10 8:54 PM

So you favor government restricting ones ability to choose where the desire to live? Wow, that is really pretty frightening, and says a lot about your outlook on the role of government. " Jan 17, 10 1:55 PM

Highat, wht don't you gorw some and ask each candidate directly?" Jan 17, 10 5:04 PM

So I take that to mean you wil be voting Republican in the state elections this year?

After all, with a Democratic Govenor, Democratic Senate, Democratic Assembly, we need some balance. " Jan 17, 10 5:09 PM

And in the interest of fairness, would we keep track of the funds said person spent during their employ locally? You know, like if they went to Disney do they take a "hit", but if they vacationed in Montauk, they get a credit?

Good grief!!" Jan 17, 10 5:39 PM
