Questions are raised over Town Board candidate's fund-raising restrictions

Now that we are completly off topic.....
If Candidate Hughes or Candidate Fleming, or Candidate McCain, or Candidate Obama, or Candidate Cuomo or Candidate Lazio yadda yadda yadda made "lowering taxes" the primary plank in their platform, there would be no chance of that candidate getting my vote.
I am a grown up, treat me as one.
Aside from politically expediatant temporary cuts or reductions, taxes don't go down. They never have, they never will.
How a candidate intends to spend the money collected in taxes, and not increasing them, now THAT gets my attention.
Attend the debates and ask the questions. " Feb 7, 10 3:06 PM

Southampton Village Police pursue suspected DWI driver before dropping chase

And WHAT would someone be arrested for?

WHO would be arrested?

Are you sure the driver was familiar with "The Res"?

You're pretty critical of situations not knowing all there is to know." Feb 10, 10 11:34 AM

This is easy PBR, the bad guy got away, no one was hurt. End of story. Doo doo occurs." Feb 10, 10 2:54 PM

Questions are raised over Town Board candidate's fund-raising restrictions

Well, first off, his number is posted on his website, apparently for a reason. For people like you, who have questions. duh

I don't know or care what "truth" you are seeking.

If ,in fact, Ryan is in someway related to Mr Hughes, ddoes that infer a conspiracy of somesort?

You do realize, don't you, that one doesnt get appointed to a postion of Police Officer without having gone through civil service testing. (written, medical, physical, mental )

Dude, why do I have to explain anything to you? YOU have the question, YOU do the research." Feb 10, 10 3:28 PM

Southampton Village Police pursue suspected DWI driver before dropping chase

It will occur again, Bad guys run from the cops. People get caught in the middle. Though MOST DWI related fatalities have nothing to do with a pursuit by LEO. Just the way it is. Been that way a long time. As sad as that may be.

Blood on MY hands?

Dude, fix your tin foil hat. " Feb 10, 10 3:33 PM

PBR says:
The Southampton Village PD "probably" has a good lead on this perpetrator. Again, read the article. The pursuing officer was close behind the car and either got a plate ID or a good description of the car.

Where do you see that in the article? I added the quotes. Where does it say anything about "close behind" ?

You and others assume that the driver was connected to the res. He well could have been from Carnarsie and just got lost.

He goes on:

You seem to be happy with the scenario that the bad guy got away.

Not at all, but he did get away, it happens.

LEO as in Law Enforcement Officer. Pretty simple.

No and no.

Is it your belief that if there were to be an arrest, for vehicle and traffic violations only at this time, then this scenario would never occur again?

Tell me, in your mind how an arrest comes to be? Does the miscreant fall on his knees and confess?

What charges do you think would come from this? And what penalties do you think would be imposed?
" Feb 10, 10 5:19 PM

Questions are raised over Town Board candidate's fund-raising restrictions

PBR, you don't get it do you? You most certainly want to imply that there exists nepotism at the PD. And you would be dead wrong as far as I can see. I have answered you factually and when I dont know the answer I provided to you a means by which YOU can research and find out the answer.

Where did I dance around anything?

Try this: Mr Hughes has published his phone number on his website. I will assume ( knowing the ramifications of assuming anything) that the purpose of that was if anyone, (including you) has a question, they could contact him. I do believe that is a reasonable statement. You should be able to get answers to all your questions that way.

If you think you are being "sandbagged" once the call is made, then say so here. Is that fair enough?

If you want to marry another story to this and my responses there try this: please call Chief Wilson and express your concern, and post his response here as well.

PBR queries:
Are you associated in any way (employment or otherwise) with Southampton Village, in general or the PD?

My response :

no and no

Not clear?

Southampton Village denies request for police records

Per NYS Law a cop can work off duty in most capacities.Licensed premises being prohibited.
Being the investigative journalist that you are, just what do you think would come to light if the info requested was produced?
Up until you read this headline, had you EVER questioned the employment of cops while "OFF DUTY"? And in the slight chance you had, what did you do about it?" Feb 19, 10 11:51 AM

PBR blathers:

"As OUR employees, however, they should be required to disclose the details of the second jobs publicly, so that we can check up on them."

No, they are employees of the Village of Southampton, a legal entity, not YOU. Next time you get stopped for a traffic violation tell the cop that you "pay his salary and that he works for you" You'll make out just fine.

"So that WE can check up on them"? Come on , give us some details, please.

Tell me this, if the cop is spending his day at a computer doing daytrading of stocks, how do you "check on them"?
if the cop is at a word processor, writing a book, how do you "check on them"?
if he is mowing a lawn, how do you "check on them"?
and then if a cop is activated in the Reserves and is sent to a combat zone, are you going to "check on them"?

Need I go on?" Feb 19, 10 1:33 PM

Southampton Village Police pursue suspected DWI driver before dropping chase

Not in the least. It occurs. Not every crime is solved, that is obvious. But in this case it worked out like I predicted. The bad guy got away. No one is going to fall on their knees and confess to having been the driver. And the owner of the car is likely keeping his or her motuh shut as well.
Tell us, how would YOU have handled it, from the start. " Feb 19, 10 1:43 PM

Once again, this is your singular issue. The cops are not "supposed" to be retired on completion of 20 years, but MAY be retired on the "pleasure" of the town board.
We don't need politicians deciding when to retire someone based on who that cop may have written a ticket to. " Feb 20, 10 12:52 PM

Problem with the 2 bedroom apartment Bob, is that when that toddler goes to school, it will cost $21,000.00 per year to educate him. I am quite sure that the rent ( and associated property tax) will not come anywhere near what the taxes needed to do that are.
There is also no doubt that your family could have found something affordable and closer than Holbrook.
And yes, the water, the beaches, and open spaces ARE important. We live in a suburban/rural area. Not Queens. It is what has attracted so many people to the area and what voters have stated over and over again is what is important to them, in the form of bonds and transfer fees to preserve open spaces, sales taxes for drinking water, etc. " Feb 20, 10 12:59 PM

Southampton Village denies request for police records

Southampton Town Board candidates square off in first debate

Nothing personal here. I just wanted to point out that the "community" of the East End ( and all of Long Island) is primarily that of single family housing. The model you state, basically that of a young couple having a starter apartment is fine. But the problem comes in when that young couple can't, or decide not to purchse a home. That small 2 bedroom apartment then supplies 2 or 3 kids to the school district without the tax base. I am a new guy, as I've only lived in town for 30 years. But affordable housing has been a political football since I came here. If you want affordable housing closer to home, look north 8 miles, there is plenty in Flanders , Riverside and Northampton, you and yours would be welcomed to be part of this community. Phaedrus says:
"He is not for a hiring hall anywhere, and we must assume that includes any hall erected by a private enterprise. He obviously prefers to see the immigrants congregating ... more on our streets in large numbers, loitering all day long."

He said he is not in favor of publicly funded hiring halls. The rest is your speculation and editorializng, which you go on to criticize the reporter for doing

It was quite clear the Ms. Fleming was indeed "timid" about staing her position om immigration. This is not her first time out of the gate. If she can't come up with a position after running through the campaign in November, and again now, KNOWING that this is a hot topic, when will she? Contrary to what she said, leadership is not about "communicating" is is about setting the example and getting others involved to accomplish a goal.

He goes on:. "Ms. Fleming had a plan which included reaching concensus, throughout the town, about the immigration problem and a hiring hall"

If the plan includes a hiring hall, why bother reaching out for a concensus? Why doesn't she just say that instead of beating around the bush? Why didn't she say that when she had the opportunity? I believe it was asked: "Yes or no Ms Fleming, are you in favor of a hiring hall?"

The only point you are right on is the reporters low head count.

Keep the rubber side down , the shiney side up and stay on the sides road Phaedrus. :)" Feb 21, 10 9:53 AM

Once again SHNative says:

"The irony to this is that the immigrants are hired by many Republican business owners who make huge profits off untaxed, uninsured labor and undercut other businesses "

Immigration is an issue that is of concern to most residents of this town. Unless of course you live on Gin Lane and don't have to be concerned about overcrowded houses next door.

Now when are you going to back up your allegations and take some pics of these "Republican" businesses that hire all these immigrants? Or please at least give us a credible excuse why you can't do that." Feb 21, 10 2:40 PM

The name is Terry Flanagan and I have never been secretive as to who I am.
Reread my post, I INVITED you and yours to the north end of town, and I did so with postitive feelings. Your claim that the best your kids could do was in Holbrook now appears slightly disengenuous.
I DON"T sell real estate, never have. But common sense tells me if I am looking for a place to live it would not be on either Gin or Further Ln, as I can't afford either.
I am not insisting on anything and I have never "zoned" anything. The point was up for discussion and you seem to take this real personal. " Feb 22, 10 9:17 PM

What is apparent, is that you view the world with the idea that we owe you and your kids something. If you are even THINKING that anything I said about housing has to do with "social or ethnic ilk" you are so very wrong. My thoughts on housing are all based on economic issues and thats all.
I CHOSE to live on the East End because of what it is. I CHOSE to live in Flanders, because I got the most bang for my buck by doing so.
In all seriousness, if you want Garden apartments, move west.
Drop your "I used to think like you then I got smart" attitude, Bob. It isnt very becoming.
This is becoming boring and way off topic, but tell me, in your master plan, are you adding in the cost of the inevitable sewer system?" Feb 24, 10 12:20 PM
