Southampton Town Will End Year With Budget Surplus

Don't get personal. You have no idea how hard Press reporters work or how thankless their jobs feel sometimes, due largely to the meanness of readers like you.
I'm sure constructive criticism would be more welcome: "Readers might have a better sense of the public discussion if the story was more specific on the number of speakers."" Dec 23, 11 11:46 AM

State Police: Wrong-Way Driver Was Intoxicated

Actually the blame could fall quite heavily on whomever was serving him drinks before the crash. NYS dram laws prohibit a commercial establishment from serving an obviously intoxicated person or one who is known to be a habitual drunk. In some states (not sure about NY), private party hosts could also be found liable. Ironically, the drunk driver (should he or she have survived a crash) could sue as well as their victims. I wonder whether the family of a drunk driver killed in a crash, as Riley was, might also be eligible to sue." Jan 18, 12 2:46 PM

Unless you're a hardcore drunk. They could build up a tolerance for a higher BAC and may not act as drunk as the rest of us might on the same number of drinks. I'm not saying Riley was an alcoholic, just noting that those general symptoms may not apply to everyone." Jan 18, 12 2:50 PM

True. Then maybe the question becomes whether anyone in his house knew he was drunk and made no attempt to stop him from getting behind the wheel." Jan 19, 12 9:13 AM

East Hampton Town Board Appoints Kimberly Shaw Natural Resources Director

Kim Shaw is a fabulous choice -- a real professional, lots of practical wisdom and a highly respected scholar as well Is it true that she has her PhD? If so, that's worth mentioning in future stories." Mar 8, 12 10:20 AM

Mary's Marvelous To Open In Bucket's Space In East Hampton Village

Buckets is missed because its prices were reasonable and its food was unpretentious. Mary's is marvelously expensive." Mar 30, 12 12:30 PM

New Shellfish Rule Blasted By Baymen

Shellfish and fish regulation by towns has never been such a great idea before. The locals rarely bring in ecologists to help them understand the broader implications. The trustees should take the time to study this carefully from an ecological perspective -- with the help of experts." Mar 30, 12 12:35 PM

Sag Harbor School Board Holds Off On Changes To Nutrition Policy

Counter Protest By Immigrant Laborers Held At Southampton 7-Eleven

Coming into this country without a visa or overstaying a visa is not a criminal offense, hence it is not a crime and calling undocumented residents "illegals" is an inaccurate misnomer. They instead have violated CIVIL immigration law, which is a CIVIL offense.

For this reason, national and international news organizations have changed their style policy to be more accurate. They now use "undocumented" because it is more accurate than "illegal." By the way, federal immigration officials do the same.

I imagine some thick-headed folks won't care about factual accuracy because referring to undocumented workers as "illegals" better fits with their efforts to demonize them." May 8, 12 11:03 AM

East Hampton Village: Leave Patrons A Place To Park

Who will get the contract to install and maintain these cameras? And process the tickets for violators?

Watch out that it's not like the booting scam of a few years back, when the EHV police chief owned the company that held the village's booting contract. He was forced to divest himself of the company when his obvious conflict of interest was made public." May 8, 12 11:15 AM

Riverhead has been a mess for a long time. The real problem is poverty." May 9, 12 9:59 AM

Like I said, some folks will persist in calling them "illegal" and "criminals" because it serves their purpose to demonize them." May 9, 12 10:00 AM

Alec Baldwin Applies For a Wind Turbine

No matter what any of us may think of him personally... While the authors of most previous comments are paying thousands upon thousands of dollars to heat and power their homes next winter with fossil fuels that keep the U.S. indebted to foreign nations and worsen global warming, Mr. Baldwin will be putting his money where his mouth is.

Good for him. I wish I had the land to do it myself.

Large Sand Shark Netted At Amagansett Beach

This is a SAND TIGER (Latin: Carcharis taurus). "Sand shark" is a misnomer that conflates the SAND TIGER and the SANDBAR SHARK (Carcharhinus plumbeus). They both live inshore, including in bays and harbors, but the SANDBAR SHARK grows to about 8 feet while the SAND TIGER can exceed 10 feet. The both have teeth -- real teeth, not sandpaper -- and they are pelagic species. Relative to the crabs in that photo, this one looks like a pup." Jul 27, 12 12:40 PM

East Hampton Town Board Looks Into Preservation Of Property Slated For Eight Homes

Unfortunately, the more land we preserve the more the resulting shortage of vacant buildable land drives up prices. Perhaps the answer might be for the town to buy distressed or foreclosed houses and redevelop them as two-family affordable rentals. That abandoned house at the bottom of Indian Hill Road (at Three Miler Harbor) should be the first purchase. It's an eyesore." Sep 10, 12 6:21 PM

Three Accused Of Running Brothel In Flanders

Mobile Home Park Residents In East Hampton Plan To Organize, Seek Impovements

The Oakview Highway trailer park used to be a place where seniors and young couples could live comfortably and affordably. I lived there for two years while saving to buy a house. I did -- right around the corner -- and I've watched since then as the park has deteriorated and my former neighbors' monthly maintenance has shot upward. It's no longer affordable, and this story suggests residents aren't getting what they're paying for. The town's housing office should take a look at the feasibility of turning this into subsidized public housing -- if the owners will sell for a reasonable price." Dec 7, 12 2:45 PM

Some Freetown Residents Push For Nature Preserve On Newly Subdivided Property

That lot would not be safe for children to use as a park unless the police consistently enforce the speed limits on Middle and Oakview highways -- something the residents of the neighborhood have been requesting for 15 years. Right now, the volume of traffic is considerable and most of it moves really, really fast. Kids cannot safely cross Oakview from the trailer park. There are also no sidewalks and the road shoulder is narrow in places." Dec 13, 14 11:27 AM
