President signs historic health care legislation into law with Bishop's support

Though this legislation falls short of meeting all the healthcare needs,it is a first step toward total coverage.The healthcare debate has been going on for 100 years,and its always the conservatives who have opposed it.
Thank you,Congressman for voting for this bill,hopefully we can expand it and build a better system of healthcare distribution and cargiving with further additions to it.We have never had a starting point before,and though it is opposed by some-mostly due to either ignorance or simple obstruction-it lays the foundation for future improvement.
The republicans decided not to participate in its passage,opposing even amendments they themselves had proposed.Let history judge them for theirindifference to the needs of the American people;let them go the way of the Whigs,a footnote in history to their self-inflicted mortal wounds." Local Tea Party movement holds two rallies on Tax Day

The deficit spending began with Reagan in the 80's.He is also the one who started the "southern strategy' when he announced his candidacy for president in Philadelphia,Mississippi-where the civil rights workers were killed in 64.He continually used rascist code words to rally southerners to support him.His policies began the degradation of process in favor of policy-and the republicans have been trying to destroy it since.
During Clintons administration,the republicans began their wholesale opposition to anything the democrats tried to do.The contract with America was an abject failure,and Newt Gingrich was forced out for engaging in questionable practices in congress-but he left leadership to John Boner,who is as toxic to the epublican party as Gingrich was.During the 90's the republicans perfected the ability to shut the democrats out of decision making,and that lasted until the dems won back congress in 2006.Again,the republicans changed the processes that worked for 200 years;thats where the responsibility lies.To this day,they have no concrete plans except to oppose the democrats-which they have done consistently.They took a page right out of the protofascist playbook;it has now been manifested in the teaparty movement-a movement hat even the teabaggers-a nme they called themselves without protest until they figured out it has other meanings-and now the republican party,which includes the tea party movement-has splintered and fragmented.How many black republican senators are there?How many black republican house members? There were what-6? black people at the teabag gathering on tax day?Not very epresentative of the African Americans in this country.
Whites will be a minority in this country in a few years;those who won't face that will cling to the right wing,which has effectively become a regional party.They cry 'we want our country back". What do you want back?Pre civil rights era? Pre new deal? Do you want to bring back Jim Crowe? Put minorities back in their place?They all overwhelmingly support the democratic party,and for good reason-they are represented by them.
I recommend that thos interested in saving this country realise that government is necessary.What would you give up?Fire protection?Are you going to negotiate with a private contractor while your house burns down? What about roads? How about if every road becomes a toll road. Let's get rid of the food and drug administration. Public schools. public transportation.
What would you be willing to give up to lower your taxes?" Apr 22, 10 11:17 PM

"I think I directly answered this the other day by saying that it wasn't something that the president had under consideration," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters shortly before Obama spoke with CNBC.

After the interview, White House deputy communications director Jen Psaki said nothing has changed and the White House is "not considering" a VAT."

The world is chanmging-people want the security of guaranteed income in old age like what is provided by social security;they also want quality healthcare available without fear of losing everything they own.They want regulation on wall street so whatever they invest will safely be there when they retire.They want to be able to buy homes and be confident that whomever they purchase a mortgage from will be responsible and willing to share a small portion of the risk so more people can have confidence in lending institutions.

The demographic is changing as well;whites will be a minority in a few years,and that scares the hell out of many,especially since the republicans have spent years alienating blacks and Hispanics by opposing programs that help them gain education and employment opportunities,like affirmitive action.Policies like the one passed in Arizona today that promote racial profiling;suppression of voting rights through literacy testing and poll taxes in the past,yet still advocated and sometimes even practiced like the disenfranchisement of voters in Florida in the 2000 election.
The teabaggers scream for less government in our personal lives yet when Terry Schaivo was in a vegetative state,how many on the right opposed the republicans trying to make the supreme court intervene in the difficult personal decision that her family had to make.
The debt load was passed on by a repubican-like every republican in the last 40 years.The last thing we should do is elect more republicans;it'll be more of the same." Apr 23, 10 10:41 PM

Nice cherry picking.
Jefferson also wrote about education-

Thomas Jefferson-". . . whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that, whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them right."

1."that democracy cannot long exist without enlightenment.
2.that it cannot function without wise and honest officials.
3.that talent and virtue, needed in a free society, should be educated regardless of wealth, birth or other accidental condition.
4.that the children of the poor must be thus educated at common expense."

and this-
1."To give every citizen the information he needs for the transaction of his own business;
2.To enable him to calculate for himself, and to express and preserve his ideas, his contracts, and accounts, in writing;
3.To improve, by reading, his morals and faculties;
4.To understand his duties to his neighbors and country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either;
5.To know his rights; to exercize with order and justice those he retains; to choose with discretion the fiduciary of those he delegates; and to notice their conduct with diligence, with candor, and judgment;
6.And, in general, to observe with intelligence and faithfulness all the social relations under which he shall be placed." (as cited in Peterson, 1960, p. 239)" May 11, 10 9:52 AM

I agree that most of the innefficiencies are in the administrative end;a self-sustaining beauracracy based on the self-importance some (but not all) administrators put on themselves.
I am an alumni of HBHS;I now live in Southampton,where I have 2 children in the school system.I am involved in the school,and I encourage all parents to become involved-that's how you learn about the issues that will affect not only your kids,but the allocation of taxpayer monies on different programs.Though there has to be a certain amount of 'give and take',without community input-if the community is apathetic toward the school,it becomes too easy for the school to take advantage of the community.
Though I am in favor of sports programs,the spending on them can be a little over enthusiastic,mostly because they appeal to a fairly small section of the school community,while cutting spending on programs like art and music,which are more enriching to the general school population,(and other programs that contribute to academic success) is self-defeating.Too much weight is given to competitive athletics simply because they are what gets the schools in the papers.
There needs to be a development of curriculum that can serve the entire community that involves every member of the school,from community event planning to local business involvement,job training programs,civics (remember civics?Not many schools teach it anymore) economics.
NCLB has been a big drain on local school districts throughout the country;preparing kids to take tests on knowledge that someone 'thinks' they should know and requiring kids to take tests developed and distributed by big corporations-who can charge not only for the test,but for the test results-costs school districts thousands-another drain on taxpayers that diverts time from actual classroom time that could be better spent on other things.NCLB has never been fully funded,yet because it is mandated,local schools pass the cost of self-funding on through taxes.Not a good use of limited resources.

It doen't mattr how many people supprt it if it is discriminatory in its nature;in a pure democracy the majority rules,butthi country is't a pure democracy;this country was designed by the founding fathers to have a mechanism to protect the minority and a constitution to assure that rights are protected.The Arizona law casts a shadow of suspicion on anyone with an accent or trait that indicates they are Hispanic.It rquirs that they produce documentation of legal residence under the threat of arrest.South Africa did that under arpartheid.Germany did that to the Jews.We are a better country than that;mass deporation won't work,the concentration of immigrants is much more than it was 50 years ago." This is from the War Powers Act of 1973,delineating the power to declare war-

SEC. 2. (b)
Under article I, section 8, of the Constitution, it is specifically provided that the Congress shall have the power to make all laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution, not only its own powers but also all other powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof.
SEC. 2. (c)
The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces."

Jun 6, 10 7:49 AM

"So now Bush didn't insure the collective judgment of Congress either."

No he didn't.He never met the requirements of congress to justify the invasion of Iraq;he never proved there were WMD's,he never established a connection between Saddam Hussein and al Quaida,he never proved there was a meeting between al Quaida and Iraqi officials,he lied about Iraq trying to obtain yellowcake uranium from Niger,then outed a covert CIA agent to avenge the fidings of that proof.All the statements in his SOTU address in 2003 were based on estimates and conjecture from the findings of UNSCOM who were unable to find the WMD's, which, after seven years still haven't been found because Saddam Hussein was for the most part complying with the terms of the first Gulf war. Of course Hussein was posturing,he needed to in order to
keep Iran from becoming the leading power in the region,which they did when Bush attacked Iraq.The U.N. weapons inspectors never found the weapons,neither did we,and Bush forced the weapons inspectors out of Iraq when he made it clear an attack was inevitable." Jun 6, 10 7:33 PM
