Town Looks To Take First Step To Regulate Wastewater

I don't usually reply directly to this kind of thing, but I'm troubled by your comment and HighHatSize's above. I'd invite each of you to drop me a private note at joeshaw@pressnewsgroup.com to give me a little more information about which "preferred groups" you think we're sheltering, and why. I sincerely am at a loss to answer that generally...we work very hard not to do that. I'd love to hear more of your feedback, and I promise not to be argumentative." Jun 9, 11 4:42 PM

Family: Sagaponack Plane Crash Pilot, Passenger On The Mend

As noted, the FAA has retracted its earlier confirmation of the man's death. Both the FAA and Town Police had confirmed it when we reported it earlier. Apologies to the family and to our readers, even though this one was beyond our control.

UPDATE: Storm Lessens In Intensity; Should Make Landfall At 10 a.m.

This is obviously a fluid situation...we're now hearing that the village has called for a voluntary evacuation of Meadow Lane as of 1 p.m. Friday, and a possible mandatory evacuation at 9 a.m. Saturday. Stay tuned--we'll keep updating." Aug 26, 11 11:44 AM

UPDATE: There Is Still Room At Shelters For Local Residents

This is NOT a wholesale mandatory evacuation--that is correct.

As of 2 p.m. today, I don't believe there are ANY mandatory evacuations ordered. However, most of the municipalities say there could be mandatory evacuation orders FOR FLOODPRONE AREAS by tomorrow morning.

This is a moving target--people should keep checking back frequently to stay up to date. We'll do our best to get the info to you ASAP." Aug 26, 11 2:44 PM

Throne-Holst And Team Release Campaign Video

I will simply say this: We felt very strongly that the film, made in the midst of this campaign, is a newsworthy event, primarily because it's the first real foray into the medium in any significant way--and the primary expense incurred by the supervisor in her reelection campaign. Plus, it's been a topic of discussion, and the subject of an ethics complaint, so we felt it certainly warranted a story.

There was a vigorous debate among the editors whether we should a) put the video on our website to accompany the story, b) link to the story, or c) not provide any kind of link. I think we settled on a compromise, because it seems a step too far to post the video on our website to accompany the story, but it also felt coy to pretend that anyone who hasn't seen the film might not want to after reading the story. We could have said, "Hey, go find it yourself." But we just felt it was relatively harmless to make it easier for any person who wants to view the film after reading the story to find it.

If it's not clear, this should in no way be seen as any kind of endorsement, nor did the campaign have anything to do with this decision. It was simply an editorial decision, based on what we felt was appropriate for our readers at 27east. " Oct 28, 11 11:20 AM

I am wary about getting involved in the debate on here, Neil--it's simply not my neighborhood, nor should it be--but I feel like it's an opportunity to offer a little insight from time to time on our decision-making when the questions are raised.

For what it's worth, we editors debate almost everything--including whether or not I should have posted that original response here! ;)
" Nov 1, 11 5:36 PM

For what it's worth, we will not be endorsing in the supervisor's race this year, because the incumbent is unopposed on the ballot. That is our policy.

Man Pleads Not Guilty In Riverhead Murder Case

For the record, our friends at the Riverhead News-Review are doing an excellent job covering the murder, which was in their coverage area ... though we generally don't allow links to other publications in comments, I'm going to make an exception here: http://riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com/2012/05/36829/riverhead-man-charged-with-murder-in-yohana-garcias-death/

To the commenter above: Your comment has been reported as inappropriate by several readers. I'm not taking it down, because of the initial remark about coverage, but I would hope future commenters would resist the temptation to make inappropriate remarks about a woman's tragic murder.
