Press Wins National Award For Excellence

We only enter the Eastern Edition at the national level--not because the Western Edition, or any edition, is a "red-headed stepchild" or anything like that, but because it represents the work of the entire group, and if we entered more than one edition we'd be competing against ourselves.

We enter all three editions in the state award competition, despite the fact that we often compete against each other. We just don't bother with NNA. (And Frank Costanza would kill me if I didn't mention that the Western Edition actually showed better this year than any other edition in the state competition!)

Incidentally, I want to stress: this award reflects the efforts of our ENTIRE staff. We all work on all three editions, believe me. There are three editions for geographic reasons, but it's all a team effort." Oct 8, 12 3:43 PM

I don't want to be argumentative, but just to set the record straight: 27East remains the most visited website in the region, and our page views and visitor count both increased after we introduced the current model, which includes added content for paid subscribers.

Like the newspaper, this website requires a great deal of staff and time to keep it current. That's true of most newspaper websites, which is why most are moving toward a paid online presence.

And I'm sincerely happy that 27East has become a destination for so many to share their views--including those of people who disagree with us, or who dislike us, as long as they stay civil. Happy to give you that opportunity--a lot of people will hear you, I'm glad to say." Oct 9, 12 12:09 PM

UPDATE: FEMA Gas Relief Arrives In Hampton Bays

We changed the wording in the story to say he "asked" the port to be reopened. In retrospect, "ordered" might have been too strong a term to characterize his role. It was, in fact, Janet Napolitano whose order was more responsible for the port's reopening.

Contractor Horror Story With A Happy Ending

The correction will run in next week's edition--it was held out of this week's paper at the request of Mr. Bonner and his attorney, who wanted to have input into the wording of the correction, but did not provide it in time for this week's deadline. " Jan 11, 13 10:25 AM

Police Warn Of Latest Type Of Phone Scam

Just FYI: This story was available free on the website for a week, at which time it automatically switched to locked. But we've made it free again, for the reason you suggest.

It's worth noting, however, that the "free" stories on our website are hardly free to produce. A lot of time and energy goes into every story. When they are posted free on the website, it's a public service, but it certainly doesn't help the newspaper stay afloat financially. (This, of course, is something all newspapers are dealing with--the demands of the web, which wants all content to be free, versus the need to survive fiscally.)

A local newspaper is a business, but it's also an institution--and it needs the support of the community to survive. One easy way to do that: If the stories you read are important to you, and others, become a subscriber. It'll not only give you more access, it'll keep the "free" content flowing, too. Lou Reed, 71, Dies At Springs Home On Sunday

Just want to say: I've always been an enormous fan, and I think history will demonstrate that only a few people had a similar impact on modern music. Plus, for quite a long time, he was the coolest person on the planet.

RIP, Lou.

Self-Inflicted Gun Shot Wound Takes Man's Life At Napeague Beach, Police Say

Just to clarify:

Our policy at The Press is to name all suspects charged with a misdemeanor charge or above. When a criminal charge is a summary or violation--lesser counts--we typically do not include names.

Also, it's important to note that we can only publish information that's provided by police--we often seek that info and are denied for various reasons, including some that are reasonable (such as that the release will affect an ongoing investigation).

We generally do not identify victims by name, though there are exceptions, such as naming businesses that have been burglarized.

If police provide the names, we generally do provide names of people involved in traffic accidents, too." Nov 21, 14 12:27 PM
