Demonstrators rally on May Day at Hook Mill for immigration reform

I say go after the employers and the illegal aliens. The clients who choose the lowest bidder can figure what they are getting and deserve it. " May 13, 10 10:31 PM

Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

Germany and SA were seeking to rid themselves of peoples who had the right to be there, not people who had broken Federal Law by entering illegally or staying past expiration on a visa.
It would likely cost tens of billions to deport the majority of illegal aliens we have at the present time. We can create the money out of thin air like we always do, why should this be any different. I will pay my share with a smile as I watch them go!:)
If we don't do this what message are we sending? It is okay to come here by any means, once here do as you please... drive with out a license, insurance and maybe switched (stolen) plates to boot? I was rear ended by a guy from Nicaragua who had all above the above and wasn't suppose to be in the country. I sure hope his rights are protected... I must not have any because I'm a citizen... what feels like a second class citizen, when offered no recourse in this situation.
I said nothing about Iraq going well nor did I say I supported the idea of the initial invasion. As for the nation building that wasn't suppose to happen... not a fan there either. See people like you huff and puff about the right, while praising the left... when in reality both have their good and bad points although their inability to work together to accomplish anything is the real problem.
Go ahead try to label me, you will be wrong, because I don't support illegal aliens doesn't mean I'm republican, just the same as if I think everyone should have reasonable healthcare doesn't mean I'm socialist and supporting a women's right to choice doesn't make me a democrat. To subscribe to one party or the others ideals across the board is to not think for ones self. " May 13, 10 11:16 PM

Flood waters finally receding: Saga of unstable water table in East Quogue

Your statement have no basis in fact.... High water table is not something which can be addressed through storm water management, basically because current storm water management calls for reducing the runoff to our surface waters. This is done through the use of dry wells and catch basins which all send the water underground, in turn raising the water table. The EPA guidelines for storm water management call for this approach. If you were suggesting we bottle the storm water and ship it off the island, then yes storm water management could have an impact.

As for the Town or Village being able to manipulate the water table level... LOL good luck. These people should buck up and pay top have their basements properly sealed to eliminate flooding or seepage from below. " May 17, 10 11:10 PM

It definitely can't be addressed by local government, they don't know which way is up! The community meeting is a good idea. It would have been an ideal time for them to look in to ways of fixing it themselves.... the basement sealing I mentioned in the previous post. Many people may not be aware of how economical and effective this approach would be.

Westhampton Beach man receives GOP nod for assembly; Thiele gets Democratic endorsement

peoplefirst - He says we should deport all "illegals". How do you intend to do that, Mr. Blumenthal? What is your plan for deporting 20 million people? I suppose the government would fund this?

Why wouldn't the government fund the deportation? It is their responsibility to the citizens of this nation to do so in the interest of national security and the economy. I know you don't want to lose your landscaper, but really now... should we fund the endless entitlements which many illegals hook into once they are here?

Tell me how illegals don't do any harm, no better yet tell those four Garden City families whose daughters were hit by that illegal from Guatemala how they don't do any harm! His actions just highlighted the need for deportation and a secure boarder!" May 21, 10 8:30 PM

How many innocent citizens need to be injured/killed/raped/robbed before action is taken to make the situation right?" May 21, 10 8:32 PM

that was a test because every time I hit submit my comment was not put through, I kept getting message that said "page not found"" May 23, 10 2:06 PM

First off I noticed you didn't defend the illegal hit and run artist from Guatemala, don't you have a slant to defend him?

AZ has a good start on how to "round them up" start by identifying them as illegal aliens so they can be turned over to the Feds for processing.
If I am required to show my "papers when in another country to prove my right to be there as well as my correct identity, I don't see why it should be any different here. I can’t imagine traveling aboard with false papers.

As for an economic collapse.... you are getting ahead of yourself with that statement of opinion. If this country suffers from an economic collapse it won't be because we deported illegals who never should have been here to start with. It would be because we create money out of thin air based on anticipated GDP that will pay the debt service down the line!

As for your personal attack of calling my idea rash stupidity, this makes you a bigot.... for you exhibit bigoted behavior.
" May 23, 10 2:06 PM

I didn't say the only people that commit those crimes are illegal aliens. Why you chose to try to put words in my mouth, I am not quite sure..... maybe because you can defend criminals without putting a spin on others comments.

As for Wadsworth whom you used to try to validate your opinion, what do you want to bet he was referring to LEGAL immigration as opposed to the ILLEGAL immigration which I was referring to. Even so to attribute the drop in crime to the influx of immigrants is preposterous. Although I understand your desire to try and misrepresent it to back up your patronage of criminals." FAA to impose new regulations for helicopters

The Atlantic route makes the most sense. Why should they be able to endanger people by flying over homes. At least if the heli goes down in the ocean it is just those on board who will be the victims and not some one who did chose to assume the risk they do by flying in the heli.

I have seen them fly well below 1000' It is all I can do at that point to keep from driving to the helipad to tell the pilot what I think of his disregard for peoples right to peace and quite on their properties." May 23, 10 2:25 PM

Westhampton Beach man receives GOP nod for assembly; Thiele gets Democratic endorsement

Thank you, I stand corrected. I glad I called you on it and learned something in the process.
I don't agree with everything he wrote, but a good bit of makes sense. What do you see as being the problem with securing our boarders? When I say sealing them, I mean allowing crossings to take place solely at checkpoints with proper documentation.
" May 24, 10 9:22 PM

What you just said, is the problem with this country. In sports it equals "every child is a winner" this is a debilitating philosophy. Face it not everyone is not going to be able to do or learn everything that is taught. People have differing aptitudes and strengths. If making wallets or birdhouses are their strengths, so be it. Maybe if we didn't try to turn "special needs children in to neurosurgeons, we could get some affordable birdhouses built here, instead of importing them from China with everything else.

"We lag behind almost all other industrialized democracies when it comes to educating our kids. Why do you Republicans always look to schools as a place to save money?"
Do we lag behind in educating special needs kids or the average kids? I think we spend too much on special needs and not enough on average kids. Other industrialized nations don't coddle those who don't make the cut, they cut them.
I agree the standards should be raised for education of our children, but that doesn't mean it has to cost more. It does have to be more efficient, cutting teachers tenure would help improve their performance. We spend more on education than ever and it doesn't show in the majority of students.
" May 24, 10 9:44 PM

I think everyone can agree the the are many cultures and even languages spoken in America. I agree children should have the opportunity to learn a second or even third language from an early age. The problem arises when we cater to a group who has disregarded our laws by offering government forms, special classes in schools to enable them to function without learning the language. We have people from all over the world living here speaking so many different native languages, yet they all learned English to "Melt" into our melting pot. Which by the way we are not so much a melting pot but a conglomeration of ethnic, religious and culturally individualized communities.
Now we are expected to accept Spanish as a viable second language, because there are so many spanish speaking people who came here the wrong way. We can't continue to reward them for bad behavior it sets a bad precedent.
I understand your basic analogy with the abortion/boarder situation. Only main difference is I don't see the increase in danger for those choosing to enter the country illegally to be an issue. I think the increased danger many serve as a deterrent, if the are foreseeable consequences to their actions maybe they will think better of it. My concern is for the safety of the citizens of this country first and foremost. Criminals from another country are not my concern, until they are here, then I am concerned with how to send them back to where they belong.
As for creating safety and jobs in Mexico, you should be aware that the vast majority of illegal aliens are from elsewhere in Central and South America. Fixing Mexico won't stem the flow of illegal aliens.
I personally have sympathy for both sides of the debate as well although it is hard not to say things to get the likes of peoplefirst and lablover all worked up because they are so bigoted. I have nothing against people from Central and South America coming here legally to work on visas or as permanent citizens.
You must understand that racist is a word used too loosely in this country and especially in this comment section. If I don't approve of people breaking the law by crossing our boarder improperly it doesn't making me a racist, if I oppose all people of a certain race coming here, then the label racist would be accurate. I don't believe most of those on here are racist, I do believe a lot of the liberal types on the pro-illegal side of this debate incorrectly use that to discredit peoples opinions and feelings.
On the other half of your analogy, the abortion debate in this country. I agree with you that if made illegal it would only make for increased danger to women seeking that procedure. It is a heated issue that many people feel very strongly about and everyone seems to have an strong opinion. In that I am no different, I feel very strongly that the choice is the woman's. To impose one's opinion on another as far as what is going on within their own body is going way to far, in what we like to call a free society." May 25, 10 3:25 PM

Woman killed in motorcycle accident on Napeague stretch

Frank you are out of line and completely wrong, do yourself a favor and look up the definition of homicide. It is one thing to be ignorant, but you seem to take it to the next level often. Have some respect for the families here, since you can't respect yourself enough to remain silent. " May 25, 10 3:49 PM

So the cops initial pursuit had nothing to do with him taking off as fast as he did?" May 25, 10 4:06 PM

He may have been an excellent rider for all you know, a deer could have run out in front of him. Either way it's a tragedy." May 25, 10 4:08 PM

I can grasp that he wasn't suppose to be operating the bike at all due to his suspended license. I also do know that it is virtually impossible for a cop in a car to catch a person on a motorcycle. Yes, I understand that a motorcycle is capable of killing others on the road and that risk increases exponentially when a pursuit is undertaken. I am not blaming the cop, I am just saying that sometimes it makes sense to weigh the infraction with the possible consequences of a mishap, should the stop not go by the book. Meaning is someone speeding on a bike as much of a danger to the public as the same bike speeding faster, while the operator is directing part of his attention to the cop chasing him and the officer operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed to try and catch a machine that he is not equipped to catch." Terry - I'll tell you what makes me think he would have stopped, a roadblock. The type of motorcycle he was riding doesn't handle grass, sand or dirt. Block the road he has nowhere to go, except back to Montauk which is a dead end." May 25, 10 7:24 PM

Lifesaver you say a helmet offers little to no protection. That is the single most foolish statement I've read on this thread. I know from personal experience that a helmet (full faced) is essential to protecting ones self on a motorcycle. Granted it isn't going to guarantee safety or survival, but it does help." May 25, 10 7:30 PM

Frankie - Homicide requires intent. In this case intent was not present, unless you think he intended to kill her.

Homocide - the deliberate and unlawful killing of one person by another

Deliberate - done consciously and intentionally;

fully considered; not impulsive

done or acting in a careful and unhurried way

Considering the above definitions, I repeat you are wrong. It does not extend to action that results in another's death, the term for that is Manslaughter which by definition is not homicide." May 25, 10 7:45 PM

Wait now the EMS personnel have to seek therapy for dreams they will have, because of his decision? Come on guy, if he is to be held responsible for his actions, then so are first responders for their choice of careers. You have to know as an EMS woker you will be exposed to carnage, if you can't deal, choose a different profession. " May 26, 10 1:20 PM

Doubt he was going anywhere near the speed he accelerated to for the chase." May 26, 10 1:22 PM

Tell you what you have a much better chance of surviving a blow to the head with a helmet on, than you do without one. No doubt about the broken neck not being helped by a helmet, but to say it doesn't offer any protection is just flat out wrong.
In a crash a helmet is going to slide as it hits the pavement, where a person's head if going to create more friction, more friction equals more pressure on the neck.
I imagine you have never worn a helmet since you think they don't provide any protection, but 70-80% of people at any ski resort would disagree with you." May 26, 10 1:29 PM

There is a law against driving with a suspended license. Yet it is not worth risking lives to enforce. The cop was doing his job, but for him to think he could chase down a bike absent a crash is poor judgement.
I have heard stories of people who will pull up next to a cop on the LIE and flip him off just to frustrate him because there is no way for him to catch the bike, short of a heli." May 26, 10 1:36 PM

There are many people driving on our roads with no license or suspended/revoked licenses. Thing is, the pursuit was started simply based on speeding, it was stated that he had previous traffic violations, but there was no mention of any accidents.... There are people constantly speeding all over this Town/County/State to act like he was doing some thing aberrant is ridiculous. Not that it justifies it, but all you chastising his action better not be speeding yourselves. Pot calling the Kettle on here all over the place." May 26, 10 1:47 PM

Oh and if you don't speed make sure you STOP completely at stop signs count to three then proceed. This I know for a fact is not done by 98% of drivers. " May 26, 10 1:49 PM

I am sorry for your family as well, it is tragic. I'm not sticking up for him, but I am saying this could've been handled in a different manner as to the apprehension tactics. What do you want to bet that in a future similar situation, there will be different methods used to affect a traffic stop. I know everyone wants to demonize him now because of the results of his actions, I doubt he wanted to crash a kill your niece it was an accident, negligent yes, but still an accident. They were engaged according to the article, correct? If this is the case it would appear that while Mr. Byank is responsible for the loss of your niece and future grand niece he also has suffered the same loss as you. They as a married couple would have spent ideally the rest of their lives together.
You say going 10 miles over the limit is one thing, I wonder how fast he was initially going over the limit when the pursuit began? If it was 10 or so by your logic he shouldn't have even been pulled over?
As for my right to chastise people for how they drive it is covered by the first amendment and if people want to throw stones they should make sure they are not living in glass houses." May 26, 10 8:44 PM

In fairness a marina set up for seasonal recreational usage can not also accommodate commercial vessels at the same time. There is also a big difference in the layout of the recreational marinas compared to the Town Dock, for one you can't get your truck right up to the edge of the boat at the rec. marinas as you can at the Town Dock.

Two students hospitalized after Route 114 crash

Just because an accident occurred doesn't mean that a ticket is written, in NYS our insurance is no fault, so tickets aren't written at every accident. In states like FL if an accident happens blame in assessed and a ticket is written.
People screw up, this guy seems to have done just that, but it doesn't mean he is guilty of something and needs to be charged. He could have been going 45 mph, with a truck on that size that would be more than fast enough to do that level of damage to a little Honda.
Just be glad the girls survived and weren't seriously injured." May 27, 10 8:16 PM

Terry - So you don't approve of speeding, but you seem to be a fan of gambling. Are you okay with all consensual crimes or just gambling? " May 27, 10 8:27 PM

Two students hospitalized after Route 114 crash

No I am not confusing the two, I used FL as an example because there when an accident occurs the police officer has to determine who is at fault and cite them for something to establish blame. This happens primarily because of the structure of auto insurance there.

Your suggesting that next time I get pulled over to tell the officer that he can't ticket me because I live in a "No Fault" state is ridiculous, reread what I wrote and I wish you better luck understanding it the next time. Just because an accident happens doesn't automatically mean that traffic tickets are issued.

I don't see how me saying he screwed up means he broke the law, getting in an accident doesn't automatically mean charges, even if there had been a fatality. You may not like this or agree, but that is the way it is. That's why it's called an accident.
