Bishop will vote yes on health care reform bill

This bill is the most comprehenisve piece of legislation dealing with health care reform in decades. The bill is by no means perfect but will cover over 30 million AMERICANS who do not have health care. Fortunately I am in a position where I already have health care through my employer. Workingmomof4, just curious to how you feel about the other "workingmomsof4" in this country that DO NOT have health care through their employer? Grimag, perhaps you should look into moving along with Rush Limbaugh to another country if the bill passes. I hear Costa Rica might be his desitnation (a country with national health care). Meidcaid and Medicare have been around for decades and our country is still here, still free, and still considered "the greatest nation on earth." What I really wonder is how much worse in shape our country would be without those programs?" Mar 19, 10 4:52 PM

Oddone sentenced to 22 years in prison

Bobby H,

It was testified by witnesses that people were attempting to get Oddone off Reister. Plus in today's climate, the good samaritan isnt too likely to help out someone in an altercation like that. They'd prob end up behind bars too. People steer clear of getting into things like that especially if they know no one involved. Sad. " Apr 15, 10 6:05 PM

Hampton Bays school budget includes 18.5 percent tax hike

It was not long ago when I was a student in Hampton Bays Public Schools. I look back at my many years spent in Hampton Bays with such fondness and recall many good memories, many great teachers, and a community that is as tight and strong as any other. One of the reasons why I chose to become an educator in New York City was because of the many positive influences and role models I came across while a student. These teachers had high expectations, wise words, and always made themselves available. As a matter of fact, I often try to emulate many of these teachers while in my own classroom. Through honors and advanced placement courses, I was prepared to enter a competitive private college with confidence. The plethora of extracurricular activites allowed me to discover new interests and offered me leadership roles. I have seen the entire town make huge strides in recent years to beautify itself. However, if we do not support our school and all those who rely upon it, all of those beautfications will be meaningless. One aspect of the school system in Hampton Bays which I would like to see improved is the % of students in the district recieving Regents diplomas. I was saddened to see Hampton Bays near the bottom of the list with a score of 77%, which is below neighboring school districts and one of the lowest totals on Long Island. I know numbers can be misleading sometimes, but this is something that needs to be focused on. Im sure the administration is working hard to address this problem. " Apr 26, 10 5:20 PM

Can you please step into 2010. It sounds like all of your conclusions are based on your own school experience. One forgets how quickly and rapidly the world of education changes. " Apr 26, 10 5:32 PM

Town reassessment complicates Hampton Bays school tax scenario

David, please do not make yourself sound like someone who doesn't have a grip with reality. Administrators work a full year schedule. Also, running a school is a job that you cannot just "turn off" when you walk into your home. It is a job that requires immense dedication. As someone who has been involved in the Hampton Bays community for over twenty years, I cannot remember a time when we have had a more competent and dedicated administration team. " May 11, 10 8:33 PM

The problem with Hampton Bays is not the student population, the teachers, or administration. It is that incompetent and ignorant people call it home. Everyone in Hampton Bays seems to be an expert on the public education system - yet their only experience with it is probably that of a student. " May 11, 10 8:38 PM

Police cite 21 on drug charges at Neptune Beach Club over holiday weekend

Lets ballpark the total attendance of Neptune Beach Club at 4500 for the weekend which is a modest estimate. 21 out of 4500 people arrested? I think that works out to be less than .005% of the people attending the establishment. Almost all of these arrests were outside of the club. This is probably due to SH police cracking down on drug use at the club last summer. Im sure these arrests will curb further use this summer however I am confident there will always be a number of idiots who will test their luck and still consume drugs outside the club before theyre admitted. I just feel bad for the poor guy who got the summons for crapping in the dunes! When ya gotta go - ya gotta go!! Lets have a safe and happy Summer 2010. Happy days in Hampton Bays. Work at Hampton Bays corner inches toward completion

It was nice to see the intersection job completed when I was in the hamlet this weekend. My happiness quickly turned to sorrow when I saw more road construction just a few feet west of the completed project. Looks like more roadwork on one of the busiest routes on the East End. I hope this project is completed in a timely manner as parts of Montauk Highway do not have any traffic lanes marked which may be confusing to motorists unfamiliar with the area. I just hope the work is satisfactory and not completed in haste. I'd rather see a job done the right way than one that is rushed and will only lead to needed repairs in the near future. Certainly this construction will slow the crawl along Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays during the summer months. " Jun 14, 10 11:47 AM

East Quogue woman files $70 million lawsuit against Suffolk County and Southampton Town

This story basically sums up everything thats wrong with this country. First, a woman breaks the law and due to words and actions is placed under sucide watch. Now she wants to cash in for the big payout? Are you kidding me lady? 70 mil to fund your website? Who are you - Steve Jobs? This lawsuit is an absolute waste of time and taxpayers money. If this woman was a real "patriot" she would admit her wrongdoings and just go quietly into the night. " Aug 6, 10 6:14 PM

Raucous Meeting Focuses On Fights At Southampton High School

Does Southampton School District have a positive behavioral support system in place? I'm sure when it comes down to it, an overwhelming majority of students in the schools are respectful, display self-control, and are working towards achieving goals they have made for themselves. The students who are causing the problems are a small number. More security guards are not the answer. Security guards can only try to stop a problem after it has begun. The real solution is stopping these problems before they occur. That takes a school-wide effort of administration, ALL STAFF, and ALL STUDENTS to be on the same page and have a common vision of what they want their school to represent. It also bothers me as a former resident of the East End that they only time students/schools get front page coverage by the SH Press is when it is a negative story. Perhaps highlighting successes at schools should be highlighted (instead of a small blurb on page 20whatever) on the front covers too!" Oct 23, 10 12:25 PM

Bishop Votes In Favor Of Debt Ceiling Deal; President Signs Measure

Americans want the government to spend less and for the rich to be taxed more. I don't understand why some Americans can't see that the Dems have a vision for the future and the Republicans want this country to revert back to 1890. Congress is made up of a bunch of lawyers and this is the biggest problem our country faces. These people aren't visionaries, they're arguers. The best ideas are not winning, the best arguers are. We need a Congress comprised of scientists, educators, businesspeople, thinkers, doers, doctors, etc. Are the only people capable of developing legislation those who have studied legal procedures?" More Than A Year Out From Election, Outside Groups Begin To Weigh In

I am sick and tired of hearing Republicans speak about bipartisan reform. As long as a Republican is involved, there will never be bipartisanship. They are unwilling to compromise as it was evident in the debt ceiling debates. Their idea of compromise is getting "98%" of what they wanted. Guess that leaves 2% for Democrats - what a compromise. Two Southampton Schools Flagged For Improvement By State

@Goldenrod, due to Title I funding, the SHES is eligible for supplemental education services. This allows economically disadvantaged families to receive (usually) small group (no more than 10 students) tutoring services. These services are Intemded at improving math and ELA scores. I think one of the problems is the NCLB law itself. It places far too much priority on test scores (English language learners, students with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students historically perform lower on these assessments)." The Consequences of Conversation with Children

Studies have shown the relationship between language development in early childhood and later success in reading. Parents and other family members have great influence on a child’s development of language and other pre-literacy skills.

More than 40 families were observed over several years to study how, and how often, parents talk with children. Researchers found a tremendous variety in the amount of words spoken to children in the first three years of life and in the quality of feedback they received. These verbal interactions with adults are major predictors of how prepared children will be to succeed in school.

Quality of Conversations

The way some parents talk teaches children about language, although they may not realize it. Called "incidental teaching," this occurs when a parent responds to a topic introduced by the child, and then prompts the child to elaborate or relate the topic to other words and experiences. The "teaching" concludes when the parent expresses appreciation of the child’s use of language. These brief, but frequent encouragements help children learn.

Other parents may not make the most of the teaching opportunities offered by conversations with their child. These parents may discourage the child from practicing language skills by talking at, rather than with, the child or by stopping or correcting the child too often. Frequent prohibitions limit a child’s opportunities to learn words and to explore the world they describe.

Quantity of Conversations

The frequency of parent/child interactions can expand the positive or negative impact on learning. Frequent, positive talking during everyday activities exposes children to more words and expressions, and more chances to practice and receive approval. Children who are often discouraged from speaking or exploring will limit themselves and their growth.

Influence of Income

The study found that while family income was highly related to levels of children’s language exposure, the relationship was not absolute. Some middle-income families behaved more like high-income families, preparing their children for higher achievement through vocabulary development and other language skills. Other middle-income families behaved more like low-income families, with a paucity of language exposure for children.

An average child growing up in a low-income family receiving welfare hears one-half to one-third as many spoken words as children in more affluent households. At these rates the low-income child would know about 3,000 words by age 6, while the child of the high-income family would have a vocabulary of 20,000 words.

To provide the low-income child with weekly language experience equal to that of a child from a middle-income family, it would require 41 hours per week of out-of-home word exposure as rich as those heard by the most affluent children.

Number of words heard at home per hour
by 1- and 2-year-olds learning to talk:

low-income child

middle-income child

high-income child

Number of words heard by age 3:

low-income child
10 million

middle-income child
20 million

high-income child
30 million

Thiele Joins Effort To Close Hampton Bays Nightclub

That establishment has been operating for along as I can remember. I can recall the days of American Pie, Dublin Over, and Brazil. The people who are complaining the most about this club were not aware that this place existed before they moved in? If I was looking into moving into a neighborhood I think I'd research quality of life issues, such as "is there a nightclub next to my house?" SH Town did a pretty great job of destroying the club scene in Hampton Bays and surrounding areas by cracking down on summer share houses. I'd really Ike to see them cutting dowm on the "other" types of share houses I see in the community, if ya know what I mean. " Aug 5, 12 12:01 PM
