A ramble with The Gardener

I took your advice and went sweet pea crazy on a new deer fence - some I bought and most I planted from seed - same results - growing slowly and germination was slow. I noticed however the wild sweet peas that grow just off my property are doing just fine - guess they're a bit tougher!" May 27, 09 2:21 PM

Southampton Town considers creating a reserve fund to pay off debt service

I think Ms Kabot's idea is a good one. Get hold of the fiscal issues first to avoid future debt - the opportunity in the future for aquiring new land will be there - but let's get the books in order first. " May 29, 09 9:19 PM

I think Ms Kabot's idea is a good one. Get hold of the fiscal issues first to avoid future debt - the opportunity in the future for aquiring new land will be there - but let's get the books in order first. Its fiscally prudent to carry as little debt as possible - " May 29, 09 9:20 PM

Hults faces felony charges; probe's focus turns to supervisor's office

I don't know all the circumstances and background here. But as a career bureaucrat involved in budgeting you are sometimes called upon to do things you know are not correct. A lot of pressure can be placed on you. I've enjoyed the luxury of civil service protection so in my case I've able to say no knowing I could not be fired and I don't know if that is the case here. Let the guy have his day in court; there are whistle blowing laws now that sometimes protect those left exposed - and sometimes they don't.
Last comment - what does this mean for Southampton Town?? Deja vou?" Jun 11, 09 10:39 PM

Swine flu diagnosis for two Sag Harbor students

I understand your point - but read the book on the 1918 Swine Flu outbreak. The first wave of cases were relatively mild - like now - the virus then morphed into a real killer of not just already sick people but healthy ones. I assume that's the concern here by the medical field and hence part of the hype. This version may not morph like 1918 - I guess no one knows - but we do need to be aware of it." Jun 15, 09 4:12 PM

Supervisor proposes $1 million in budget cuts

Good move Linda - its difficult to be cutting but you have to and you recognize the degree of the problem. You need to be considerate of the workforce - they are not to blame - but in return the workforce needs to realize the immediate savings is in personal service. Concessions are called for on the union's part - they should not take the negative role -they are as much part of the problem as the solution. Perhaps easier said than done but you can do it

will need to sacrifice in order to keep their positions." Jun 24, 09 8:49 PM

Supervisor proposes $1 million in budget cuts

To 1whbny

The postions were probably filled at the beginning of the year and then went vacant and not filled, but the full annual salary was still carried on the books. An example would be an employee is earning at a rate of $50,000 a year, works until June 30th, and then leaves. The position is then eliminated and the unspent salary of $25,000 becomes the savings for the year.
The Board really needs to act on this quickly and not waste time." Jun 25, 09 10:56 AM

Brown Tide back in western Shinnecock Bay

I noticed the tide at Quantuck last week;
It seems that over harvesting of shellfish plays a role in this as clams and oysters are nature's water filterers. PrivateerMatt - when did the tow raking start?" Jul 1, 09 11:49 AM

Thanks for the info Matt - its a real and myterious problem. How's Peconic Bay doing? I kayaked at Indian Island last weekend and the water looked OK, at least for now." Jul 2, 09 10:19 AM

Housing director claims discrimination by Southampton Town

Pretty abysmal behavior on Mr. White's part. What ever happened to the clause "serves at the pleasure of the Supervisor?" Did Mr. White have a contract or was he solely civil service? Even if he is civil service departments are downsized/eliminated all the time. I remember when it was announced he was appointed to the position, and I thought it seemed to be just another layer of govenment being added for show. Skip, what were you thinking?
I guess Mr. White will look for a buyout (and his attorney a payday for "legal fees") - or perhaps the Town will dig in and fight it - but either way we will all pay for it. All of this has to stop. Many governments now have what is called a "vacancy control board" where every hire, regardless of level, has to be examined and aprroved by a majority and its an even vote, so the supervisor in theory cannot use the position of his/her office to force a hire. I know Mr. White's hiring goes back a few years but I hope something like this is in place now. The Town's finances are a real mess and there is worse to come." Jul 6, 09 4:56 PM

Southampton Town Board slashes $1 million from town budget

Needed move; Good work Linda, and try for a furlough agreement with the unions - try to avoid layoffs - if you look around the country that is the prefered method - at least people keep their jobs." Jul 15, 09 2:55 PM

Deal gives Kabot GOP nod for reelection

Some coup! The pressure is on Ms Kabot now - She has bucked the Republican Party in the past election and that's been part of her appeal; the danger here is that she now associates herself too closely with 'good ole boys' and we get business as usual. Hopefully she'll continue on a partisan path and fix the mess the GOP created." Jul 21, 09 11:00 AM

A perspective on Long Island wines

I recently had the 1980 Hargraves Cab and it was superb! LI wines have evolved in the last 5 years where the quiality now matches or exceeds the price. The comments about the wine making process on Long Island maturing and progressing over time is absolutely correct. Keep up the good work - and I am quite fond of Kareem's Chenin Blanc - a rival for anything out of the loire Valley." Sep 3, 09 11:59 AM

Bishop holds town hall meeting on health care reform

My first died of cancer. It ws a long illness. She had insurance - when exhausted my insurance kicked in. When it was all over I was still $200,000 in debt, even with insurance. I avoided backruptcy by settling with the banks and negotiated a settlement with Sloan-Kettering for the balance owned which they thankfully accepted, as did some of her doctors. Even with "good" insurance a person can go belly up. At that time the hospital and the doctors were willing to accept less - I don't think that's the case now." Sep 4, 09 3:02 PM
