Town Releases Details Of Sordi Separation Agreement

Barack Obama was faced with a difficult vote in the Illinois legislature — to support a bill that would let some juveniles be tried as adults, a position that risked drawing fire from African-Americans, or to oppose it, possibly undermining his image as a tough-on-crime moderate.

In the end, Mr. Obama chose neither to vote for nor against the bill. He voted “present,” effectively sidestepping the issue, an option he invoked nearly 130 times as a state senator.

Guldi Found Guilty Of Two Felony Charges

Excerpt from the 27east Style Guide:

If a current or former political figure is convicted of a criminal offense, the following protocol is to be observed.

a) If a Republican, be sure that party affiliation is in the headline, i.e. "Former Republican mayor John Smith convicted...". Replace all pronouns referring to the subject with party affiliation, i.e., instead of "He said in a statement..." use "The former Republican mayor said...". Where the use of "Republican" is impractical, be sure to append an "(R)" after the subjects name.

b) If a Democrat, party affiliation need not be referenced." Feb 16, 11 7:20 PM

Cremation is hardly "green".

Cremation is a tremendous waste of energy and is a source of air pollution (including heavy metal toxins).

Traditional embalming and burial slowly leaches numerous nasty chemicals into the groundwater. Nothing prevents decomposition, and there is nothing "dignified" about being embalmed. It's done for convienience and to extend the time the deceased can be viewed.

A truly green funeral would involve no more than topical disinfection, and burial in a readily decomposable container, like pine or wicker." Feb 17, 11 11:19 AM

Razza, you propogate so many lies it would be a full time job to address them all.

Teachers are covered by the NY Empire Plan, unless they opt out.

This plan is run by the state, with minimal administrative costs. Rates are based on health care expenditures and a tiny fraction goes into administrative costs.

What "worthless" insurance company raised these rates? What benefits were reduced?

Razza? Hello? Are you going to answer, or is your ego in danger of imploding when confronted with facts?" Feb 17, 11 4:01 PM

What does any of this have to do with the state plan raising their rates?

"Although Empire's administrative costs may be low, most private insurers spend anywhere from 12 to 30% on administrative costs - which drives up all health care costs, forcing Empire to raise their Premiums to meet those increased health care costs."

How could a private insurer's admistrative costs raise any rates but their own?

You are incapable of thinking rationally.

" Feb 17, 11 5:38 PM

"When you can't answer facts, hurl insults instead."
" Keep on baggin'."

You really like to project your own vile behavior onto others, don't you?" Feb 17, 11 5:40 PM

"Increased administrative costs of private insurers drive up the cost of health care"

Only for the people in that plan!

If Aetna operates inefficiently and 30% of their premiums go towards THEIR administrative costs, how does that make costs go up with any other insurer? It doesn't raise the cost of the providers, drugs, or facilities. It only raises the premiums of that insurer.

THINK " Feb 17, 11 6:30 PM

OK Phil. I read your post and the attached link. What are you ojecting to?

The accusation by razza was that insurance company profiteering is the cause for rising insurance rates.

All you've done is to reference a long list of reasons other than profiteering that can cause rates to rise.

It happens to be accurate. Thank you for proving my point.

(By the way, pooling has nothing to do with this. Insurance rates vary widely between companies. Companies with higher administrative costs are less competitive becuase they have to charge more or offer less for the same premium. Pooling does not mean rates are the same across insurers, as you seem to think.)" Feb 17, 11 7:03 PM

You have no comprehension of business or finance (unsuprisingly for a proponent of wealth "redistribution").

All other factors being equal:

Inefficient insurance collects a $1000 premium, and has $700 to spend on treatment.

Efficient insurance collects a $1000 premium and has $900 to spend on treatment.

So, for the same premium Efficient insurance can offer more coverage for the same premium. Alternatively, they can charge a lower premium and still offer everything Inefficient insurer can.

The fact that Inefficient insurer spends less on treatment DOES NOT MAKE costs go up for any other insurer.

Why are you so devoid of logic?" Feb 17, 11 7:13 PM

Phil, New York uses a pure community rating which allows insurers to vary rates based on benefit design and family composition only.

All that means is that an insurance company in NY has to charge the same rate for the same plan for the same type of family.

IE. Couple without children:

Insurer A can charge $1000 for all couples without children, but that rate must be offered to all couples without children.

Insurer B can charge $5000 for a plan with the same benfits, as long as that rate is offered to all couples without children.

Of course, Insurer B won't be in business for long, but the state doesn't dictate what an insurer can charge.

This system spreads risk, but not industry wide. Risk is shared only within a pool, within a particular plan, within a single company.

A sudden influx of claims within a pool at Aetna does not mean rates will rise at Blue Cross for the same pool.

But anyway, what does this have to do with Razza's claim of profiteering causing insurance rate rises? Thus far, you've shown rates rise for other, valid reasons." Feb 17, 11 8:00 PM

A teacher must join the union to work in the Wisconson public school system.

A teacher must pay union dues. These dues are invoulantarily taken from their paychecks.

The union pools these dues, and donates large amounts to particular politicians.

When the time comes to negotiate, they sit across the tabel from the same politicians, whose loyalties are with the unions that help them get elected.

Philathome can't imagine how the public interest isn't corrupted through this process. Nope, can't see it at all.

. " Feb 21, 11 2:05 PM

The problem with leftist traitors like you phil, is that you keep inventing "rights" that have no basis in the Constitution.

Being allowed to collude with sympathetic politicians, that your organization helped elect, to screw the taxpayer and drive the nation into bankruptcy is not a right." Feb 21, 11 7:11 PM

Outrageous. However, it pales in comparison to the cleptocracy that government employment has become.

A guy working in the highway department making $40,000 certainly needs the protection of a union. A $140,000 teacher does not." Feb 21, 11 7:15 PM

Yeah phil, tell us that unions don't use dues to get candidates elected who will funnel the most money back to their memebers

WEAC is the teachers union in Wisconson. This is from the AP:

WEAC is typically among the largest-spending special interests in Wisconsin politics, helping former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle win two terms in office and often trying to sway key legislative races with television ads and mailers. It also contributes to other groups that run political ads in favor of Democrats and against Republicans.

WEAC's political arm has spent more than $11 million in donations to campaigns and spending to support and oppose other candidates since 1998, nearly all of it helping Democrats, according to McCabe. The group endorsed Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, a Democrat, in his race against Walker for governor last year.

McCabe said WEAC's campaign spending dwarfs that by other unions — including American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents tens of thousands of state and local workers in Wisconsin. But he said they were all a key part of the Democratic party's coalition in a state that has generally leaned to the left.

" Feb 21, 11 8:22 PM

If it's okay for unions to contribute to political campaigns, why should corporations be prohibited from contributing to them?

" Feb 22, 11 6:48 PM

Town Will Investigate Charges Of Code Violations At Springs Home

All but a handful of towns have been reluctant to enforce zoning laws on homes converted into illegal apartments.

A decade ago, the issue was, and still is, the dearth of reasonably priced rental housing. An illegal one bedroom apartment in Mastic can go for $1300-$1500 a month. A family making $40,000-$50,000 would see more than half their net income going towards rent.

The extremely overcrowded (with bed sharing) illegal housing is a fairly recent development that's spreading from the west of the island to our area. Surely there's nothing racist in observing that many of these properties are occupied by the sizeable illegal immigrant population. To anyone familiar with working class living conditions in most of Latin America, it's easy to see why this is acceptable to these (predominantly) men. Reliable electricity and a consistant supply of potable water are significant improvements to their quality of life.

Unfortunately, tacit approval to unending illegal immigration, bolstered by the unscrupulous people who employ them, and a ready supply of landlords willing to take full advantage will only put more housing pressure on the legal working class.

Conditions can't improve for those at the bottom when you keep importing people who are willing to lower the bar of wage and housing standards." Feb 23, 11 5:29 PM

The rich don't own these crummy properties, nor are they trying to rent them.

The rich aren't behind the enormous property taxes that are one of the main drivers of high rental costs. If anything, it's single family housing coverted into illegal apartments packed with lots of kids. Ten kids in one house cost approximately $180,000 per year to educate, in a property that might have $8,000 in school taxes." Feb 24, 11 8:45 AM

Glass Mound Proves A Growing Challenge

I'm an avid recycler, and in this area (and most areas) recycling glass makes no sense.

It's very heavy, has limited uses, and requires more energy to transport and process than to make virgin glass.

Burying it is really not a bad option. It's produced from one of the most abundent elements on earth, is completely inert, non-toxic,. and harmless.

Recycle paper, plastic, and metal. Glass might as well go right into the garbage.

If the town could start mixing it into their asphalt, that would be a different story, since you'd at least be saving landfill space.

Better yet, do what a couple of provinces in Canada require, and replace 2 liter soda bottle with one liter, reuseable glass bottles. They have a hefty deposit, and when returned they're washed, relabled, and reused (by the bottler). It's not only more enviornmentally sustainable, but it reduces the amount of garbage strewn around the landscape." Mar 2, 11 12:42 PM

No uncleronk, you can ignore a crackpot. Razza is part of the rising tide of latino nationalism. Like the racist organization La Raza, Razza welcomes illegal immigrants and the price local communities have to pay in higher taxes, crime, and a steady degenration of quality of life in the name of "social justice".

You see, in Raza's mind it's quite simple. White people are ignorant, evil, and stole everything they have from Brown people.

Brown people on the other hand are filled with latino wisdom and tolerance and if they steal government benefits, use hospitals without paying, and they take food off your family's table through higher taxation as a result, that's justice. " Mar 16, 11 12:44 PM

Oh how romantic. Those desperate illegal immigrants, risking everything to come here...blah blah blah. I guess those who come here legally, respecting our laws and waiting there turn in line are fools fo doing so.

You call others deceptive, and here you are suggesting parents have to wait 21 years to benefit from anchor babies. Nonsense. Judges are extremely unlikely to deport illegal immigrant parents with a child who is a citizen, and the illegal immigrant community well knows this.

progressnow must smile every time there news about another drunk, unlicensed, uninsured illegal killing an innocent citizen and fleeing back across the border.

....or the illegal immigrant MS13 gang member who executed a mother and child last year.

...or the billions given out in welfare to illegals that could be used to help the poor we already have.

...or the destruction of middle class construction jobs by illegals working without paying taxes, for less than legal, unionized workers.

I don't even need to elaborate on the obvious contradictions in your so called "progressive" values. Driving down wages, taking low skilled jobs from legal workers during a period of high unemployment, sucking away human capital from underdeveloped countries, and providing a relief valve for corrupt governments to ship off their poor rather than improving living conditions.

Thankfully, the vast majority of Americans see through your euphemisms, doubletalk, and code words. They know what you and your ilk call "comprehensive immigration reform" is just a foundation for blanket amnesty, and promises of enforcement measures will not be fulfilled.

No nation can stand without control over it's borders, and that's really the appeal of illegal immigration to leftists. They couch the issue in emotional rhetoric (and throw out the customary racism charges) but ultimately if it harms "evil" America, that's enough reason for them to support it.

Springs Superintendent Responds To Teacher Layoff Rumors

Wow, you really are a colossal cut and paste liar. This is a typical moveON, thinkprogress tactic. Enrage their base with "shocking" statistics knowing most won't bother to scratch beneath the surface.

First of all, here's a link and excerpts from the original article, not the false one Mrs. Z linked to. Interestingly, the article she did link to shows that 47% of households pay NO federal income tax at all. In fact, many of these zero-tax liability households get refundable tax credits, meaning they recieve federal benefits while contributing NOTHING. Woohoo, free money for Obama's base!

Apparently, Mrs.Z doesn't think 45%+ tax rates are enough for these corporations, who employ hundreds of thousands of people (who pay taxes). Lets just drive them to another country or better yet, lets put them out of business!

Bank of America: "Because the company lost money, it owed no taxes."

Exxon: "That said, Uncle Sam gets his money in other ways. Including sales taxes and duties, Exxon recorded $7.7 billion in U.S. tax costs last year, and paid even more overseas." "The company's effective income tax rate was a hefty 47%, its highest in three years."

Chevron: "Some businesses save money on taxes by logging their biggest profits in low-tax countries. But like Exxon, Chevron has little choice about where it can extract oil. Thanks to the billions it sends overseas, Chevron faced an effective income tax rate of 43% last year. "

General Electric: "General Electric didn't have to pay the IRS a dime of income tax in 2009. That's because the company's financial services division lost a boatload of money, giving GE a tax break it used to offset income from its other business lines."

Amazing how differently things look in context, eh, Mrs Z?

illion. The company's effective income tax rate was a hefty 47%, its highest in three years.
